[Challenge] The Monotype Challenge v8, Tera Edition

Pokemon X Ground Monotype run Part 1

Spoiler:

The Ultimate Monotype Challenge! (Fighting)

Yellow, HeartGold, Sigma Σmerald, Platinum, White 2, X, Ultra Sun, Sword, Violet.

Additional Rules: - No items on important battles (rival, leaders, etc.)
- Set mode for important battles.

4. Move relearner changed the team a lot!

Move relearner improved a lot some of my Pokémon, you can see the new moves below! As for the important fights, I actually faced both Fairy and Psychic leaders, which could be tough for my Fighting-types... or not...

- Valerie was the sixth leader, Fairy-type gym. Hawlucha could not do much against the Mawile, as she used Iron Defense, but Toxicroak with Mud Bomb easily beat it, and then outsped and destroyed both Mr. Mime and Sylveon with Poison Jab.

- Before the 7th gym, you fight again against Serena. Pangoro easily beat Meowstic and Delphox, but the former's Shadow Ball lowered my Sp. Def, so Delphox did a lot of damage with Flamethrower. I switched into Chesnaught, who dealt with both Jolteon (her 3 Discharges didn't paralyze, some luck...) and Absol.

- 7th gym was next, and I didn't remember it being so tedious, so much pointless walking across paths. In the end I got to the leader, Olympia. Due to Reflect, Medicham was about to fall to Sigilyph, not doing enough and taking a massive hit from Air Slash, but I got a crit with Ice Punch and beat her first Pokémon. After that, Meowstic was very easy for Pangoro (she tried setting up Calm Minds) and so was Slowking, now with no Reflect active.

- I also fought Lysandre twice. For the first fight, Lucario dealt with Mienfoo, but died to Pyroar... Hawlucha outsped it and destroyed it with High Jump Kick, and then also beat the Murkrow. I sent Toxicroak against Gyarados to absorb Aqua Tail, but he defeated my Pokémon thanks to Earthquake. He was severely weakened, so Hawlucha came back and finished the fight with Acrobatics. Second fight he has better Pokémon, a mysterious level 47 Mienshao, who left my Toxicroak with 4 HP with Acrobatics, and fell to a single Revenge. Toxicroak fell to Gyarados again, and this time Medicham with the elemental punches and High Jump Kick easily beat the rest of his team (Gyarados, Honchkrow and Pyroar).

So I stopped playing right before the final Lysandre fight. Let's get the Xerneas!

Final Team
Spoiler:

MVP: Krookodile
Might as well have a big sign on him saying "In case of Emergency, release the Croc." This thing saved me so many times. Sandile and Krokorok were ok but once it reached its final form it was soloing and sweeping teams left and right with Moxie and a good moveset. I could have let it do a lot more if i wanted but I chose to balance my team instead of just letting the croc run wild.

LVP: Nidoking
Back in Gen 1, that bulk, those offensive stats and that typing were amazing, so was its fantastic movepool which it still has. But it just doesn't hit hard enough anymore. Even with the Expert Belt on it missed OHKOs so many times, and it wasnt as bulky as i'd like. it really needs its hidden ability to keep up these days. on the flip side It did help immensely against fairy types though there wasn't a lot of those surprisingly despite it being the new toy.

May I sign up for two monotype runs in one post? I will be doing and updating them both at the same time and at the same post as well. I'm sorry in advance for the infrequent updates. I'm only doing this when I need a little break from shiny hunting.

Mono-Steel - PI Justin
Update 9 (Postgame)

I've finally gotten around to completing my postgame. I elected not to fight the E4 rematches in this game since all they have is boosted levels and a couple moveset changes on Cynthia, and I'd rather move on than grind for that. Instead, I completed the Victory Road and Route 224 sidequest, then moved on to the Battle Zone, beating the Team Galactic commanders at Stark Mountain, and finally challenged everyone at the Battleground.

The initial Multi Battle with Flint and Volkner was really hard; the two of them ganged up on me because of my weaknesses and my rival did most of the work; I would've whited out had I not used a Revive at the last minute while my Rival beat Volkner's last Pokemon. After that, I went to Route 228 during a Swarm and caught a Beldum, evolving it into a Metagross and replacing Steelix. I gave it Iron Defense and the Leftovers to make it a physical tank, and Zen Headbutt, Earthquake, and Ice Punch for offensive coverage. Apart from Metagross, my only other changes were to give my second Quick Claw to Scizor, and Signal Beam to Magnezone via the Survival Area move tutor.

Most of the Battleground battles weren't that difficult. Volkner was the only one where I had to use an item, and even then only because of bad Paralysis RNG at the last minute. Gardenia, Maylene, Candice, Cheryl, and Buck were all pushovers, however. Roark, Wake, Fantina, Byron, Mira, Riley, and Marley all managed to KO two or three of my Pokemon, but weren't tough enough to do more than that.

Pokemon X: Fairy // Pokemon Y: Dark ∙ Monotype Challenge (Standard) Badge 1 Update
I want to go through these monotype challenges with a little twist. For X and Y, I decided to do something like a Professor Oak's challenge as an additional challenge, but of course limited to the type that I am doing. I would also take advantage of the two heart affection EXP boost. This would mean I will be overleveled most of the time, which I hope wouldn't be breaking any of the standard rules. I would also be Hyper/EV training them as preparation for a possible Battle Maison battling in the endgame.

Pokemon X: Fairy
The earliest Fairy-type I can get in this game is Azurill in Route 3 (Ouvert Way) so with a little help from Fennekin, I went through the early routes, avoiding any optional trainer battles then went ahead and caught a level 5 Azurill (and a random shiny Bunnelby). As it is a friendship evolution, I decided to evolve it to Marill at level 10 so it can learn Rollout, a good physical move. I went back to all the trainers I skipped earlier and did some wild battles until Marill evolved to Azumarill at level 18. As you would expect, a level 18 Azumarill with a good rock type move will bulldoze the bug type gym. Bug Badge obtained at In-game time of 4:17

Spoiler: Pokemon Box

Pokemon Y: Dark
In this run, I can actually use a starter with Froakie eventually evolving into Greninja who is a Water/Dark-type. This section is tedious but straightforward. Just grind EXP until level 36 then beat the gym with ease. Bug Badge obtained at In-game time of 7:34

It's fine. Although two hearts is the maximum you can get in Pokemon Amie under Standard Mode rules, since three or more gives you unfair in-battle bonuses. Don't go over that on your own team unless you want to convert your run to Free Mode.

The Ultimate Monotype Challenge! (Fighting)

Yellow, HeartGold, Sigma Σmerald, Platinum, White 2, X, Ultra Sun, Sword, Violet.

Additional Rules: - No items on important battles (rival, leaders, etc.)

5. I got all badges!

Ok, so I left off just before fighting Xerneas, who I easily caught. After that, it was Lysandre, take 3! Zen Headbutt from Medicham missing meant his Mienshao beat 2 of my Pokémon, but Hawlucha almost swept his whole team. Mega Gyarados survived the High Jump Kick from my bird, but Chesnaught easily finished the fight.

Next up were the rivals, but to be honest they were really easy, with lower levels than some trainers of that route. Highlight was surviving Talonflame's Acrobatics with 8 HP with Chesnaught, then koing the bird with Rock Tomb.

And then we have Wulfric, last leader, but Ice types are very easy for me, and even if his Cryogonal beat my Toxicroak, Lucario easily destroyed his 2 remaining Pokémon with Close Combat and Aura Sphere.

After this gym I will explore the world a bit with Waterfall, and then aim for the Elite 4!

Dark was an interesting type to run. In some games, it's a wall. In some games, it's a powerhouse. In other games, it has great type coverage for its weaknesses. This is one of those types where I highly would suggest people trying one of them. It was actually fun. Did I just say that out loud? And now I'm planning on going the other route with Ghost? That's the one I want to finish the first half of the types with? Oh boy.

Just so you know, Mono-Ghost Red is optional for both the Game Mastery challenge and the Ultimate Challenge for Ghost since there's only one line of Ghost-type Pokemon in Kanto's regional dex. If you do pick it, you'll have to use at least two Haunter/Gengar since you aren't allowed to make it a solo run.

Yep, my wife and I were discussing naming conventions ahead of time. As a starting joke, since I'd been running with a Geng-ar-my, I decided to run with three of them and name them after Casper's Uncles (Fatso, Stretch, and Stinkie). I'll be using the UPR so that it lets me evolve to Gengar, but other than that, I'm actually raring to go. Other than that I start with Lick.

Having played a Gen 1 solo-Gengar run before, I'd recommend relying on Night Shade early on. That move plus Confuse Ray will do more damage than Lick will so you only really use Lick for its paralysis chance, if anything.

No kidding! I only just realized when starting up the game I had Night Shade. That'll definitely help.

Looking forward to not needing the Geng-ar-my!

And...done. I can see why that would be super fun with just a single Gengar. I might try that as a solo run. Makes me wonder whether Hypnosis/Dream Eater is better than Psychic, even if it's two spots. Add to that Thunderbolt and Mega Drain, might do quite well. A super healer attacker? Hmm.
To be honest, I played that run for a spotlighted challenge and not much else; it was the easiest, and by extension the dullest, run I've ever played in a Pokemon game. The only time I was ever seriously threatened was against Blue's Spearow in his second battle, and everything after learning Psychic was just a constant stream of 1HKOs.

Jeez. I think the only solo run I ever remember doing was a gen-1 Flareon run. That was also kinda boring, but yeah, if you are OHKOing everything, that's super boring.
