Shelby Hampton

"Everybody else has friends, and they're better friends than yours"

Shelby rolled her eyes at the notebooks her sister had left behind for her. There was no way she'd be able to read all those notes, no matter how organized they were. Audrey took studying a bit too seriously. She had spent the past few nights in Shelby's dorm, tutoring her sister against her will. Shelby was too nice to say no, and it wasn't like she had better things to do. She hadn't quite gotten around to making friends yet. Even though Audrey was almost constantly surrounded by people from her dorm, she still managed to occupy most of her sister's time. Shelby hated to complain about anything, but it was... annoying.

She buttoned up her coat and frowned at her reflection in the mirror. Her hair looked like it hadn't been brushed in days, but maybe she could hide that by throwing it in a quick bun. Her skin was a tad bit paler than normal, but that could be passed off as a result of the cold weather. The real issue was the shadows underneath her eyes. Thanks to Audrey, she had only gotten a few hours of sleep these past few nights. She didn't want to borrow concealer from her sister in case she got roped into another study session.

"I just have to get through class and I can take a nap," Shelby muttered to herself as she pulled her hair back into a bun. It was messy and sorta lopsided, but it got the job done. She shoved her feet into her boots and put a few of the coffee candy bars Audrey had bought her into her bag. The last thing she wanted to do was fall asleep in class. She'd never hear the end of it if Audrey found out.

Cream was already waiting by the door, a rare frown on her face. It was no secret that she wasn't a fan of Audrey and her Pokemon. She spent the study sessions in her Pokeball or moping around in the corner. No amount of sweet talk from Shelby could get her to play nice, and after a few days, the sisters had just left her alone. Shelby gave her Pokemon a tired smile and pulled her into her arms.

"Sorry I've been ignoring you lately, Cream. It's just... You know how Audrey is." She blew a stray bit of hair out of her face as she started heading to the cafeteria. Cream looked up at her, a scowl on her face. Shelby sighed, knowing exactly what that look meant. "I know you want me to make friends, but I can't just leave say no to Audrey. That would make me a bad sister."

Desmond Allen

Its the Finals Countdown

After a fiery Halloween, Desmond was grateful for the cold. It was maybe the only chance he had of calming the fire inside his new partner's belly. Mars, a Houndour, was a real terror sometimes, almost burning down his dorm room on multiple occasions and the forest another time. It really left Desmond with little chance to train since it seemed they couldn't go more than a few minutes before Mars would snap and start trying to burn everything in sight. Desmond had resigned himself to getting through finals and then trying again with a new determination afterwards. Otherwise though, things were going well for him and his team. He still wasn't very popular, since he wasn't a sociable person to begin with, but he at least had made progress with Daro after Halloween and the two of them would even study together on occasion.

That was the plan for today too. Desmond stretched and groaned his way out of bed this nice, wintry morning. After getting getting dressed and a couple calls of Hecate to wake up, the pair headed out for the day. He was supposed to meet Daro out by the battlefields so that's where Desmond walked towards. He got there pretty quickly and saw Daro hadn't arrived yet and seeing an empty bench, Desmond walked over, brushed the snow off and sat down. Desmond was alright with the cold, as uncommon as it is in Orre. Maybe that was why, after primarily dealing with a hot desert his whole life, the cold was refreshing. Soon, Desmond found himself daydreaming to pass the time, his eyes fluttering shut, Hecate curled up on his lap to keep them both warm.

Day 5: Oh, just look at how lucky we are!

Heading northeast, practically parallel to the mountain range. Even if it would seem like second-nature, since Kayrana had visited the forest almost every day, she still sometimes got lost in the road and had Aurai guide. Today, though, they made it alright. Whimsi hopped around and Aurai kept close to Kayrana this time. She did seem relaxed, but was a bit troubled inside... maybe she should be studying, after all? She'd assured everyone at the online chat that sleeping and eating were the most important things, and to not overdo their study sessions, but maybe a little bit more of studying would do no harm. "Ralts, ralts!" Aurai's voice got her out of her trance. She should enjoy the moment, that's right. Worrying would do no good.

"The trees sure look like they are freezing, right Aurai?" Aurai clinged to Kayrana's trench coat. She was inside it on an inside-pocket and popped her head out Kayrana's chest. It would look funny to any bystander, but Kayrana paid no mind. Whimsi, as always, could withstand the cold with her abundant cotton and her lively behaviour. "But Whimsi is as lively as ever, that cotton does miracles!"

They walked on further into the forest, up to a clearing. "Well, shall we do some training? It's good to be prepared just in case. But be very cautious, alright?" she said in a crooning voice, letting Aurai into the grassy floor. Whimsi nodded. Aurai shivered but Kayrana pat her head. "You can surely beat some cold, Aurai! But if you're feeling down, you tell me and we'll go back immediately." Aurai nodded and hopped in her place to gain some momentum. Kayrana distanced herself a bit, Whimsi did too.

"Alright, Whimsi, try to conjure up a Gust! Aurai, try to dodge, Whimsi, your job will be to land a hit on Aurai!"

Whimsi's mind, as Aurai was able to see, pictured two big, leafy wings that stood in place on the air, nothing holding them there. The wings started flapping rapidly. Whimsi's mind was clear, and her eyes closed for a moment. Then she opened them, and the wind grew ever stronger. It was all up to Whimsi's mind and to her willpower, after all. She hopped around, right, left, trying to hit Aurai. Aurai perceived those imaginary wings clearly, and she could see where they were going to move. But dodging normally wasn't enough. Whimsi's speed was out of bounds. The breeze almost hit her, and she had to use Double Team, creating illusory copies of herself, now Whimsi's mind didn't know where to aim... but to Whimsi, it didn't matter. She changed aims really fast, going from one copy to another. This went on for minutes, both of them seemed tired, but they kept pushing on for Kayrana. Soon, Aurai thought, she'd have to use Teleport, or the airwave would blow her away. But she noticed something growing on the leafy wings... what were those... petals?? What was that? The wind started carrying little deadly petals. Teleport! Aurai was back on Kayrana's trench coat bag.

"Ah, ah, what was that, Whimsi? That was awesome!" Kayrana pulled out her Pokedex and aimed it at the still vibrant gust. "Fairy Wind. The Pokemon stirs up a fairy wind that damages the opponent." "Wah, is this a new move? You've really outdone yourself!" Whimsi's wind began to recede. Kayrana grabbed her and spun her around in the air with her hands. Whimsi basked in her trainer's love. Aurai was happy for Whimsi, but she felt a bit of envy in her heart. As if on cue, though: "You did amazingly well too, Aurai. I expected no less, Whimsi couldn't land a hit!" she chirped excitedly and gradually stopped spinning around. Aurai smiled.

The morning went on with them training for a while, when they got too tired, they decided to turn back. What none of them was expecting was that a Comfey who had been watching them from afar would follow them over to the entrance of the forest.

They were already midway through the grassy terrain, going back to the dorms, when airheaded Whimsi finally let out a cry and pointed at Kayrana's head. And surely enough, there was a Comfey acting as a flower-crown on Kayrana's orange hair. "What's the matter, Whimsi? Do you want to try and lay atop my head for a while? I mean, I guess you could try, it'd be somewhat uncomfortable but I can--" Whimsi shook her head. "Then what...?" Then she felt something... spin around in her head. She lifted on hand to her head and plucked the Comfey out of her head to look at it.

"Wha- what is this...? It's so cute!" she exclaimed. She took out her PokeGear with her left hand. "Comfey, the Posy Picker Pokémon. A Fairy type. It releases a relaxing scent from the flowers it picks. The scent has a healing effect and can cure status conditions. This Pokémon stretches sticky vines from its head to pick flowers to create the ring around itself, and will give these rings to those it likes. The flowers can also be thrown at enemy Pokémon to create an opening to either flee or attack. However, it feel uneasy without flowers." "It says she likes us!" Both Whimsi and Aurai smiled widely. It never ceased to amaze them how happy Kayrana got when they met a new friend, or just, when anything new happened. And Whimsi had been wanting to meet a new friend, too. "Do you want to travel with us? We'll do our best, we'll never leave you, okay?" The Comfey nodded. "Yay! Then let me fetch a ball just now," she took off her backpack and fished a PokeBall, "we'll customise it later for you, so don't worry," Kayrana touched the Comfey's head, Comfey didn't waste time to getting into the PokeBall and then coming out just as fast. "We'll have to find a proper name for you, too! I'm so glad you joined us. This is Whimsi here, and Aurai is here in my chest, she's a bit freezy," she giggled. "Comfey, comfey, fey!" The Comfey was bundled with joy, and she was lifted up again to adorn Kayrana's head. "Going to train really was the most right choice, Aurai!" she was beamed, and Aurai was so glad to see her like this.

Not every day you see a Comfey just landing onto your head, do you? Kayrana's unbridled joy made it seem as if today wasn't freezing but a sunny day. How will Whimsi, Aurai, and their new friend get along? What name will Kayrana choose? The adventure continues for Kayrana and her companions in this cold but shining day!

The Most Heated Battle Around!

Arwyn is pleased. ''A double battle, eh? Can't say I ever did one of those before.... sure. Let's give it a try.''

Cyan went to one of the battlefields, and pulled a couple of pokeballs out of his bag. He tossed them, and a blue ray came out both of them, transforming into a Larvesta and a Joltik. Both were ready for whoever Arwyn was about to release. Well, that's at least what they thought, you can't really blame them when they barely have any experience.

Arwyn headed over to the battlefield as well, and looked at the Pokémon Cyan sent out. He grabbed two of his Pokéballs and threw them. Out came a Klink raring with energy and a Magby with a little bit too much flame on his butt. They all looked ready for battle, as it has been a while.

"Alright, let's start! Lara, use String Shot and Tesla, use camouflage!" Lara spun around, and launched hundreds of fine webs out of her mouth, aiming at both opponents. Tesla analyzed his surroundings, that were covered with dirt and pebbles. He then began to change colors and even gain some small pebbles on his back. Tesla is now a Ground Type!

The string shot wraps up Sizzler and Ash. Arwyn has a plan though. "Ash, burn through your strings with Ember! Sizzler, use charge and cut those strings!" Cutting through string shot was very important, as it immobilized Arwyn's Pokèmon. Still, he wasted time on breaking out. He should try and dodge the attack...

Cyan did not expect that. Part of his plan did rely on immobilizing them, so this was definitely a setback. He still had a plan up his sleeve though. "Lara, use Sunny Day! Tesla, use Thunder Wave at that Magby!" Lara's 'horns' began to glow, as she looked up and closed her eyes. The clouds began moving out of the way, revealing the sun behind. This increased the temperature of the field slightly, but not as much as the last time since it was winter. Tesla, on the other hand, began shaking uncontrollably until he released small waves of electricity in the direction of the Magby.

''Ash, watch out! Sizzler, jump in front of him and take the thunder wave!'' The Klink sped in front of the Magby and took the thunder wave attack. He was now paralyzed, but Ash was saved. ''Ash, use Ember on that Joltik!'' Not only Cyan's Pokémon could benefit from the sun, so could Ash. Ash starts gathering a swirling ball of fire in its mouth before firing it at the Joltik. Thanks to the sunny day it's more powerful than it would be without the sun. ''Sizzler, stand by!''

The ball of flames collided with Tesla, but he didn't faint! Camouflage's type change allowed Tesla to barely hang on. "Tesla, hang on a little longer, and use Spider Web! Lara, time to toast them with a Heat Wave!" Tesla quickly made a web and launched at his opponents not with the intent to slow them, but to keep them from fleeing or switching! Soon after, Lara's horns began glowing once more. But this time, it was with a certain passion. The air around her became hotter, and a Heat Wave was released, targeting anyone in front of her.

The spider web came around Magby and Klink and it seemed to have it's effect. Switching would be impossible now. The heat wave came in though, and distracted with the spider web, it hit both of them. Sizzler being a steel type and being weak to fire, and in the sun, it did a lot of damage. However, thanks to his charging out of the strings earlier, he managed to hold on just barely, with the boost to his special defense. Ash took the hit like a champ though, being resistant to fire type attacks. ''Not bad......'' Arwyn couldn't help but smile at this intense battle. ''Sizzler, use charge again and again!'' The small gear started spinning and charging electricity like crazy now. His special defense would go through the roof. ''Ash, use ember again, and target that troublesome Joltik!'' Again, Ash started gathering a hot ball of fire in its mouth and fired it at the Joltik.

Tesla, even if not weak to it, wouldn't be able to take another hit. He tried his best to dodge, but didn't make it. The fireball struck him, making him faint. "Dang it, Tesla, come back!" A red ray of energy came out of the pokeball, and Tesla returned. "OK, Max, it's your time to shine!" A large Pinsir came out of the other pokeball, staring menacingly into their next enemies. "Max, use Seismic Toss on that pesky Magby, and Lara, keep roasting both of them!" Lara's horns began to glow once more for another Heat Wave, and Max was charging like there was no tomorrow at the Magby, ready to hurl him in the air with her pincers.

''A strong pinsir, huh? I don't know if you have more Pokémon than this, but let's keep it as a 3V3. I don't have more than 3.'' The Pinsir proceeded to grab the Magby, hurl him up, and then down, causing damage, and the Larvesta was about to unleash a heat wave. He wasn't about to let that happen. ''Ash, use feint attack!'' Ash pretended to look for something around Volcarona, avoiding the heat wave while doing so. In the Larvesta's confusion, he attacked with a kick in it's direction. Unfortunately, Sizzler wasn't so lucky. He took the heat wave and all the charging wasn't enough. Soon, he lay on the ground, all defeated, ''Oh no, Sizzler! Come back, you did your best.'' Arwyn looked concerned. ''I have one more Pokémon. Go, Celery!'' A Scraggy, looking ready to brawl. ''Use Sand Attack on the Pinsir!'' Celery began kicking up sand from the ground, and kicked it to Pinsir.

Max was not happy about it. Not one bit. Not only her attack did barely anything, she got sand kicked in her face?!? Lara was fine, as Feint Attack isn't particularly strong, much less coming from a Magby. "Lara, use another Heat Wave! Max, Focus Energy! Max? MAX!" She wasn't listening. With only pure rage in her mind, she charged at the Scraggy, ready for a Close Combat. But with her accuracy penalized and being blinded by rage, only Arceus knows what she will end up hitting.

''Heh. Keep using heat wave, and it'll get easier to predict where it will hit. Ash, use leer on that Larvesta!'' the Magby comes close to Lara's face, while walking through the heat wave, clearly taking damage, but his eyes are glowing red and looks very intimidating. You almost forget that Ash is in serious pain right now. On the other side, Pinsir is disobeying it's trainers commands, and she charges forward for a strong move. Celery isn't scared though, as the accuracy has gone down immensely. ''Celery, dodge it and use headbutt!''

Leer couldn't do any damage, but surely made Lara very uncomfortable. Enough for her to drop her defenses. As for Max, the headbutt struck her at full force. "This isn't working, I got to switch things up. Lara, use String Shot and wrap them up! Max, knock it off and use Close Combat on the Magby!" Lara quickly made a web and threw it on her opponents to decrease their speed. Max was still angry, but decided to listen to Cyan and use that anger to attack the Magby even if she might miss.

At this range, string shot could not miss and it hit Magby and tied him up. The Pinsir came storming at him with close combat, which would surely take him out if it hit. Arwyn had to do something....''Celery, use more Sand Attack on the Pinsir!'' Celery followed suit and jumped over Pinsir, then quickly grabbed some sand and thew it in her face. This would hopefully give Ash enough time to escape the thread. Magby escaped and wasn't happy. He looked really wounded. One more hit would do it. ''Ash, use smog on that Larvesta!'' Ash opened his mouth, and a thick, black fog came out of it's mouth. It was hard to see what happened at first, due to the fog.

The Smog connected with Lara, and although it didn't do much damage, she was poisoned. Max on the other hand, got into another fit, and seemed to be charging at the Scraggy again with a Quick Attack. This meant that Lara couldn't just use Heat wave, as it would likely heat Max as well. "Lara, quickly use Ember on the Magby and try to finish him off!" Lara charged a small flame around her, and threw it in the Magby's direction. As for Max, she was hopelessly charging at Scraggy.

The ember hit Ash, and unfortunately, that was the end for him. Arwyn wasn't afraid though, as he saw the poisoned Larvesta just barely holding on. ''Ash, come back! You did great!'' Arwyn needed that Larvesta gone. ''Celery, finish of that Larvesta with Feint attack!' Scraggy ran behind the Larvesta and seemingly vanished, before kicking it from behind.

Lara flew a small distance before landing. She tried her best to get back up, but it was too much. Leer and a Dark move wouldn't be enough, as she has had quite a bit of training, but a Critical Hit could. "Dang it! Lara, return!" Cyan pointed the Pokeball at her, to which she returned. "Max, it's all up to you now! Finish that Scraggy with Close Combat!" It should be more than enough to KO him, but the accuracy drops are still there, so it's down to luck.

''Celery, dodge it.'' Celery jumped around the Pinsir who kept trying to hit him, but couldn't due to the amount of sand attack's that were used on it. ''Celery, use headbutt, and make it quick!'' Celery too saw that this battle was already over, and he prepared his head and then rammed it into Pinsir.

If Max wasn't pissed before, she was now. It didn't matter what Cyan tried to say, she couldn't listen to him. She tried a Last-Ditch effort Seismic Toss, without realizing that it was a rock... That thing came crashing down on her, knocking herself out.

"Max... What did I tell you. If you would at least listen. Come back for now, have a rest. Arwyn, great battle by the way! gotta train my gys before the next time. Trust me, you won't be as lucky!"

''Come back, Celery." Scraggy does a dance of victory before returning to the pokeball. "We'll see about that! Anyway, class is starting soon. We should head over."

"Oh shoot! I forgot about class! We'll catch up later!" Cyan then proceeded to hurry to his next class.

Rylie's Dorm Room

Rylie scoffed "Please, where I come from warm summer days are colder than this. It isn't even snowing yet!" She said with a bit of a smug look. "In any case, I'm going to finish getting ready. You better keep that promise!" She warned as she headed back into her room. Shutting the door behind her Rylie let Taiga out of his ball, just as expected he seemed happy as ever to simply exist. "Alright bud, I'm gonna finish getting ready and do a bit of research here, just be sure to stay out of trouble alright buddy?" She said, giving him a pat on his back.

Twenty or so minutes pass by as Rylie gets ready for the rest of the day. Showered, properly dressed, and food successfully smuggled from the cafeteria Rylie was officially prepared for the morning and sat at her computer to do some research before class. "Blue body… Long neck… Weird diamond stone thing… What the heck are you Taiga?" Rylie muttered to herself, click clacking away at her keyboard with one hand and playing tug of war with Taiga with the other. "I'm glad you like this toy, I bought it for Hakan years ago and he didn't seem interested. Neither did kit but I wasn't really expecting that prissy fox to be." She said looking down at taiga with a smile. Taiga seemed thrilled with the toy as he pulled at the small rope with all his might. Occasionally shaking his head wildly in attempt to win their little contest.

"Lapras, Altaria…. No, no… Huh, that one kind of looks like Uncle Frank. Aha! Here we go!" Rylie exclaimed finally coming across what Pokémon Taiga appeared to be. "Let's see here, Amaura…. Large glowing sails, Rock ice type, glad to know I was on the right track there." Rylie muttered to herself as she read over the bio of the pokemon. As she scrolled down she noticed a bright read warning box displayed prominently on the page.

"Warning! Do not touch the crystals located on the sides of the body. They are freezing cold and can cause severe frostbite almost instantly if carelessly handled."

"Yikes, that makes the small shock seem tame by comparison." Rylie said, looking down at Taiga who is still going to town on that rope. Scrolling down through the Biology section of the page, something seemed to catch Rylie's eye as she skimmed it. "This ancient Pokemon has been recently restored after what is believed to be 100 million years of extinction. While breeders have been successful in helping restore the population, this Pokémon is still extraordinarily rare thanks to difficulties involved with working in the severe climate of it's natural habitat." Rylie read over out loud several times, trying to process the information. "So… Taiga is a fossil then? I heard of scientists restoring ancient pokemon before, it was in the news, something along the lines of Shellgon and Cranidos they ended up calling them. However I never heard of one like this before…"

Rylie skimmed through the rest of her article before closing the tab on her computer and looking down at Taiga. "I can't believe they'd just give a student something like this… what kind of crazy resources does this school have?" Taiga fell backwards, giving an exhausted huff as he surrendered in their game. "Well, looks like I tuckered you out too. Just in time for class It seems. I'll introduce you to the other two once we're out." She said, giving Taiga one last pat on the back before returning him to his ball. Grabbing her bag, there was a large clattering of broken metal and glass as the broken incubator fell out on the floor. "I guess I can see why Brock didn't want it back..."

Home Sweet Home

It felt strange to be back on the island, conjuring a feeling inside of her that she could only compare to how she felt when she was back on the ocean after a long time spent on land. She supposed it must be what most people felt when they returned to their home town from a long journey, happy to treat familiar ground again. Reassured by the things which had stayed the same and intrigued by the ones which had changed, excited to see old faces again and learn how time had treated them. It also highlighted the things about herself that had changed, as well as the things that hadn't. She had never been, and still was not, a morning person. A long, slow sip of her coffee helped ease her fatigue but didn't do much for the low level of nervousness she was feeling at the idea of teaching a class in the school she had once been a student.

Samantha Felicity Cooper was a few inches above average height, tanned, athletically built and currently nursing a mild hangover as she waited for her students to arrive. Her light brown hair was pulled into an intricate but ultimately practical braid that was hanging over her left shoulder and her green eyes were starting to brighten up thanks in no small part to the caffeine was considering starting a small church to. Dressed in heavy work boots, a rough pair of old blue jeans, a leather belt with a series of what seemed to be custom Pokeballs clipped to it, a plain white tee and a brown suede aviator jacket lined with Mareep wool she looked more like she should be working security somewhere than teaching a class of up and coming Pokemon Trainers, yet there she was leaning back on her chair with her feet stacked on the desk.

Unlike the majority of the other teachers at the Academy, permanent or otherwise, she wasn't a Gym Leader, Champion or otherwise world renowned Trainer. It was possible a few students might recognise her from finishing in the Top Twelve of the Unova League the previous year but otherwise she was an unknown quantity. There were no obvious clues as to what the class was going to be about and she hadn't even bothered to perform the classic manoeuvre of writing her name across the chalkboard. It looked as though she had just walked in and sunk into the chair with her coffee, which was exactly what had happened. As students began to filter in and take their seats she watched them with very little expression, sipping her coffee as she waited for everybody to arrive.

Arwyn Wilton - Hurrying to class.

After the battle, Arwyn decided to spend some time in his dorm, just spraying his Pokémon with some medicine, considering they got quite a beating in that battle. He wouldn't want them to be weakened and in pain, as he wouldn't like being in pain for a long amount of time. ''I hope you're feeling better. This is our first win, but I feel like this sets the way for more wins along the way! The only thing we can do is train harder. Alright guys, let's promise each other to do our best.'' The Pokémon nodded in agreement and began hugging Arwyn, and they all smiled together. Now, it was finally time for his morning tea. He went to the kitchen, and saw to his dismay, Rheia Gleeson, the girl who was so rude to him the other day, chatting it up with two other girls, with her Frillish next to her. She didn't notice him, and he was planning on keeping low to avoid drawing her attention. He went back to his room to drink it, but then...he saw the clock. ''Uh-oh....Class is starting in ten minutes?! Oh crap!'' Leaving his tea behind, Arwyn grabbed his backpack and flew off, faster than he had ever ran. If he ran fast enough, there was no way he wouldn't make it in time if he ran like this. He came across tons of other students who were also in a hurry, but he seemed to make it in time when he saw the school gates with tons of students. He quickly made his way to his classroom, looking at the number and sat down at a desk, completely out of breath.

Rylie's Dorm Room --> Classroom

Rylie pushed herself away from her computer, the back of her chair hitting the foot of her bed. Finally done with skimming through the bio of Amaura she took a quick glance over towards the clock. "Yeah as I figured, Just about time for class. From one form of studying to another I guess." As she grabbed her bag and began to head out for class Rylie noticed her lonely breakfast she smuggled from the cafeteria, laying on her desk untouched. "Heck, I completely forgot about that!" She thought to herself, grabbing the plate. "Hopefully whoever the teacher is today doesn't mind…"

*****

Rylie showed up a bit early to class, hiding the plate of food from the teacher rather lazily with her body she quietly grabbed a seat near the back of the class. Throwing her bag on the front of the desk, she hid her food behind it as other students began to trickle in. Shoving a strip of bacon in her gullet, she gave this new teacher a quick look over. "Yeah, definitely don't recognize her, the jacket is pretty sweet though." Rylie thought to herself, shoveling down a forkful of eggs as she noted the cup of coffee on the table. "I doubt she would care if she caught me eating, still not taking that chance though."

Desmond Allen

Its the Finals Countdown

"Hey! Wake up! You crazy!?"

Desmond's eyes fluttered open. Before him was a familiar face, his old comrade, turned fellow student, Daro. "Hey...what's up? What's with the yelling?" He stretched and yawned while Hecate did the same.

Daro sighs visibly frustrated. "What kind of idiot takes a nap in this weather? Ya could have gotten frostbite or hypothermia!?"

Desmond smiles and chuckles, "Are you saying you care about me?"

Daro blushes and turns away, "No, I just want to make sure you don't die before beat you in a battle!"

"Sure sure. Too bad that'll never happen. Anyways you still wanna study later?"

"Yeah, these finals are gonna be hard and i can't stand studying by myself."

"Sounds good, lets head over to class before we're late." Desmond gets up and stretches one more time before taking off on a light jog.

"Hey, wait up! We wouldn't even be running late if it weren't for you sleeping like a Prinplup!" Daro yelled as he raced to catch up.

The pair just barely made it to class in time. Most of the seats were taken and the only spots next to each other were in the front row. Guess that's what they got for being late. The pair walked to the front and sat down. In front of them, sat a teacher who looked even more miserable to be there than the students were. On top of that, she looked like nobody Desmond recognized and he had done a lot of reading about famous trainers. She looked like none of them. He looked over to Daro who seemed to be thinking. "She looks familiar but I can't quite place it..." He whispered, "definitely not world famous or anything though." Desmond nodded in agreement especially after looking closer at her. Remembering his time watching some of his older comrades back in Orre, Desmond could tell this woman had hit the Oran Berry juice a little hard the night before. He looked back over at Daro who seemed to be having the same thought and they both chuckled, remembering all the pranks they used to pull on the older guys on these kind of mornings. Those were some good times and Desmond was thrilled he and Daro finally seemed to be getting along like they used to. They'd eventually have to talk about what happened but that could wait. Instead they needed to focus on this class for now, something told him that this wasn't going to be your typical run of the mill class.

Day 5: Arriving at class!

Kayrana got to class pretty early. Despite having breakfast and having trained for about an hour, she still had time to arrive early. The habit of waking up incredibily early never left her, after all. She had checked the classroom on the schedule board, only to find a ragged white paper that read something about 'Life Skills and General Expertise', and the teacher wasn't someone she recognised. Not that she'd recognise many people, apart from maybe if Flannery ever came to teach, or Winona, her favourite Gym Leaders. She'd probably recognise Sabrina and Diantha since they taught her already. But anyways, she thought nothing of having two classes at the same time. Maybe the teacher just decided it'd be fun.

She took a seat in the front row and looked at the teacer. A tea of coffee sat at her desk, which she took a sip of every now and then. She was dressed with lot of leather, Kayrana thought, and it was a totally different style from Kayrana's colourful one, but she liked it enough. The teacher seemed tired, but Kayrana she's have a lot to teach. Aurai and Whimsi were both atop Kayrana's desk and waited patiently. Whimsi was on the verge of falling asleep on her back at any moment, while Aurai watched over her so she wouldn't fall. The Comfey, still unnamed, adorned Kayrana's head.

Class time

Ivrant would soon follow into class, immediately taking note to the unfamiliar teacher. Huh... new perhaps? He was used to alot of the teachers being Gym Leaders of some sort but he supposed Gym Leaders had to keep busy back at their own gym. Made sense to hire other qualified folk. Life Skills and General Expertise huh? Already he recognized most of the classmates so at least he'd be among friends and familiar faces. Rylie was here as well as a couple of the students he battled the past year as well. Something told Ivrant this class might be way different from the rest.

"Gotta Focus Ivrant... really don't wanna blow it on finals..." He thought to himself as he went to a nearby desk and sat down, preping his notebooks and everything else for the upcoming class.

Shelby Hampton

"I navigate the dangerous hall..."

Shelby picked at the remains of her breakfast in silence, her eyes watering as she yawned. She really didn't want to go to class today, but Audrey would kill her if she found out she had skipped. At least she didn't have class with her sister today. She wouldn't be able to deal with constant nagging the whole day. Maybe if she was lucky, she'd manage to avoid Audrey for the rest of the day. Surely Audrey wouldn't need her for a fourth day in a row... Right? She has her own friends to deal with, and they had to be way cooler than her lame little sister who could barely keep a conversation going.

"You ready to go, Cream?" Shelby shook her head to clear it and turned to her Pokemon, who had finished eating a few minutes ago. The ice-type nodded and smiled at her trainer as she went to dump her trash. Shelby grabbed her bag from her seat and headed out of the cafeteria. She wasn't really looking forward to class. She never did. She always got the answer wrong and teachers always compared her to her sister. She's lost count of the amount of times she's been referred to as just Audrey's sister. Just because they were twins didn't mean that they should be compared to each other all the time. Shelby sighed and took a few seconds to adjust her hair before entering the classroom. She grabbed a seat towards the back of the room and tried to make herself as small as possible. The last thing she wanted to do was draw any unnecessary attention to herself. She returned Cream to her Pokeball and turned her gaze to the front of the classroom.

In Session

Sydney hurried into class and managed to snag her favourite seat - front and centre. It was a mystery to her why it was always available, it gave the best view of the board and teacher with no obstruction! She made sure that all of her books and stationary were ready since it was difficult to tell what this class was actually going to be about. She looked up at the teacher and frowned for a moment, struggling to place her until she remembered the previous years Unova League. She couldn't remember the name but this teacher had definitely participated and done quite well. It was tough to remember where exactly she had placed but she'd been a fan favourite thanks to her attitude and battling style but had been knocked out by some unlucky type match ups. Sydney started scribbling down what she could remember, maybe the teacher would be impressed if she could trot out some facts...

Sammy watched everyone filter in and once it seemed like the class was mostly all there she huffed out a sigh and got to her feet, walking over to the door and closing it over. She moved with confidence but had an odd roll to her walk that wasn't quite a swagger but was certainly unusual. She turned to the class and looked them over for a moment, anyone still chatting quickly falling silent, and sighed again.

"Alright. None of you probably know me and are used to having Gym Leaders and Champions take your classes. For those wondering my name is Samantha Cooper, Pokemon Trainer and alumni of this very school. You can call me Sam, Sammy, Cooper or Coop. If I hear a Miss or Mrs Cooper you're getting thrown in the damn sea," she said as she folded her arms, clearly not joking. "The reason I'm here and this isn't a regular class is that you've all been here a little while now and have your first set of Finals coming up. I was passing through anyway and the staff all thought you could use a seminar or something with someone who's been through it."

She grunted out a sound of derision and shook her head. "What they all seem to have forgotten is that when my year were supposed to have our first Finals we had a damned Team Rocket infestation and they rallied the students into helping with pest control. Regular programming suspended. So my experiences might not be super useful to all of you and even if any of that wasn't the case - I was about as booksmart as a sleeping Psyduck when I was here. So if you wanna talk about your exams and study tips and whatever, we can. But if you'd rather ask me some other stuff about actually being a Pokemon Trainer, or how to get the most out of your time here outside of the classroom, go for it. So far as I'm concerned this class is about whatever you kids want it to be about."

"To help you along with that," she shrugged, "I'll tell you about me. When I left here I took a run down to Alola and tackled their Island Trials, kind of what they have instead of Gyms or a regular League. Finished the Trials, got my butt handed to me on a platter by their Elite Four - first tip, don't assume because somewhere does things differently that their Trainers can't clean your clock. After that I moved around a bit, training and hitting up whatever Gyms I passed by. Didn't have much of a plan other than getting to a point where I felt comfortable taking a run at another real challenge. Turned out that was Unova last year, some of you might have seen the matches. Did the Gyms, hit up the League, made top twelve. Second tip - own your losses. People said I got bad luck with matchups, which is true, but my fault. You'll find as you keep training that you favour certain things. Either Types, or battling style, or bipedal Pokemon over quad, whatever, it doesn't matter, you just will unless you try really damn hard not to. If you're not careful your opponents can figure that out and plan for it. My opponent beat me because they did their research and brought the right Pokemon for the job, so there you go. Two tips so far. Killing it."

She smirked, and waved a hand to the class. "Anyway. Ask about any of that. Ask about this place. Ask about the best way to tie a knot, knock yourselves out. This is, what do you call it? An A - M - A to a former student and active competitive Trainer. Use it how you like."

Rylie sat quietly in the back of the class as she listened to their "Teacher" preach her life story to the class. 'Why did they get someone like this to speak? I guess she has experience, but she even admitted to not being able to help us with finals.' Rylie thought to herself, chowing down on the last remaining strip of bacon before hiding the plate away in her school bag.

For a reason she couldn't quite place, something about this person really made Rylie want to get under her skin. Nobody seemed to be jumping at asking any questions so Rylie figured she'd stir the pot just a bit. Why not? It wasn't like she was an actual teacher who could fail her. With a smile, Rylie stood up from her desk and looked their speaker in the eye. "So Mrs. Cooper…" She began, testing fate a bit "You say that your performance in the League was your fault, right? That implies that you still had some control over the turnout of the fight. In Hindsight, what would you have done differently?"

Rylie couldn't help but give a rather complacent look after she asked her question, figuring this could go one of two ways. Either this girl was selling herself short and would actually give some decent insight, or class was about to get a bit more interesting. Either way, Rylie was happy with herself.

Dead Silence

Well this teacher was certainly a different feel from everyone else. More a seasoned trainer then a gym leader. It'd be a nice perspective to hear from somebody who actually went through the same hoops as the students would be. He made a serious mental note not to address the teacher by "Miss". Ivrant actually believed she would end up tossing her out to the sea for some reason. He had all kinds of question for the experienced trainer but... Sydney was here. Alot of the answers he wanted related to eventually beating her in a battle correctly and he wanted to keep his promise to Rylie and not indirectly reference the girl. Heck he was a bit hesitant to really say much cause he had a damn good feeling she'd open her mouth to him anyways.

He froze up a bit when Rylie decided to boldly pull the "Miss" Card. Man that girl had no fear... "..." Ivrant spaced out a moment before turning back to Sam. "Certain things? So uh... what kind of Pokemon or style do you lean more toward Sammy?" Ivrant asked, curious of just how she fought in battles. It'd give him a good idea of what to expect at least.

Shade

Sammy stared at Rylie for a moment before pushing off the desk and walking to where the young student had decided to make a stand. Without saying anything she stepped behind Rylie and picked up her chair, since the girl had vacated it, and walked with it back to the front of the classroom to place it beside her own chair behind the teachers desk. With that done she turned back to face the class, leaving Rylie nowhere to sit down.

"Well," she said as though nothing had happened, "you're not wrong. We always have to own up to our losses as Trainers. They're never our Pokemons fault and no matter how good the other Trainer was, you could always have done something better. That's looking back though, right? In the moment you do your best and later on you have the luxury to go back and figure out how to improve, then use it for the next battle. My loss in the Unova League, as much as the other Trainer worked hard and did their research, comes down to me being cocky. I'd had a string of easy wins up to that point and had the crowd behind me, so I fell back on strategies that had worked for me up to that point. Should've mixed it up, used some of my other Pokemon and not assumed I was the hottest thing going. Being cocky," she said pointedly, "often leaves you exposed."

"As for the sort of Pokemon I tend to use a lot, or be good with especially, I'm a power player for the most part. I can come up with decent strategies but I'm at my strongest when I focus on overwhelming force. I find I work really well with Fighting type Pokemon, with Dark and Water being joint second. I have other Pokemon of course, I have a Wigglytuff that could level a stadium if he was in a bad mood, but you'll just naturally discover you have Pokemon you're a little better with."

Sydney kept glancing over her shoulder at Rylie, worried about the predicament her friend had gotten herself into, while not wanting to miss any of the teachers instruction. She raised her hand, not wanting to have to listen to anymore of Ivrant asking questions she already knew the answers to. "Uh, Mi- I mean, Samantha, how do you feel - that is to say from your own personal experience - how can we best use our time here to catapult our future careers as Pokemon Trainers?"

Sammy shrugged, picking her coffee back up. "I mean that kinda depends on what sort of career you want. But if you're talking about competing in the Leagues, aside from the obvious of doing the whole Badge thing, you're in a dream spot for catching whatever you want and constantly training against your classmates."
"Um..." Sydney piped up again, keeping her hand in the air, "Sorry, I just, what do you mean by obvious Badge thing?"
Sammy blinked a few times, caught out by the question." Badges. Like... you know, from Gym Le- hold on a second. You mean to tell me you've been here a whole semester and it hasn't even popped into your head that you have a rotating staff of Gym Leaders where you live? You could have enough Badges to qualify for a League before your year is even up if you put the work in. I mean, once I reached Unova last year I only had to hit up two Gyms to finish my set and I've got over half a dozen from other regions. Classrooms aren't the only way you're supposed to be learning here, okay?"

Colorful cast

Ivrant did his best to hold back his laughter. This teacher was cool as hell. Sure she didn't throw Rylie into the ocean considering well, that wouldn't look too great but this was kind of a close second. Note to self, don't screw with this chick. On the other hand, Sammy brought up a great point abotu badges. The island had all kinds of Gym Leaders here so it only made sense Gym Badges were up for grabs at any point assuming they were good enough to take them out. It'd be a good way to at least practice surely.

What kind of Pokemon did Ivrant really lean toward? He didn't have much prefence so far but felt he kept a pretty balanced group of Pokemon at the moment. Dynamo was his all rounder, Buster was his offense and Knox was just a straight tank. Nothing really stood out but Ivrant hadn't done this long enough to really find anything yet he supposed. He'd need to take Sammy's other words of advice as well. Especially about being Cocky. Ivrant didn't really consider himself too high and mighty but he got pretty competitive... but he wasn't exactly cocky. Right?

"Straight to the punch huh? Remind's me of my Marill, Buster. I bet he'd love to duke it with your Wigglytuff. The guy could use a goal to reach for. He's way too overconfident in his power." Ivrant commented. "My other Pokemon is far less confident though. She's a Sandygast but is usually afraid to come out and fight a times. I guess you could say I have kind of a colorful cast of Pokemon eheh..."

Rylie simply stared back at Samantha as her chair was confiscated, giving a bit of a satisfied sneer when she turned her back to walk to the front of the room. Scooting her desk back against the wall she leaned back against with her arms folded, effectively replacing her chair. She got to her, that's for sure.

Why was she so happy about that? She's never been the kind of person to antagonize somebody on purpose, especially an adult. For whatever reason though, getting under that woman's skin ignited this rebellious side she never knew she had. Rylie pondered these things for a moment as she passively listened to the lecture.

'Tch, she was looking right at me when she said that… I guess in a way I am being rather cocky.' Rylie thought to herself as she listened. 'She's right though, doing the same thing over and over again would be easily noticeable. From the sounds of it we have a similar fighting style, just replace Fighting with Ice for me. Maybe she knows… No, there's no way I'd let my self fall into a pattern like that.' She continued thinking, stubbornly dismissing the thought.

Rylie caught Sydney glancing back over her shoulder for a moment before turning back to Samantha. 'Was she judging me? I'm not acting that strange am I… Alright, maybe I am.' She thought to herself, quietly worrying as she leaned against her desk. 'Whatever, I'll talk to her later about it.'

As she continued listening to Samantha lecture, Rylie gave a confused look as she went on her rant about badges. The thought never occurred to her, but why would it? She had seen Candice battle before, there's no way she would stand a chance against her right now. Not bothering to raise her hand she took it upon herself to speak up. "I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand Ma'am." She began, knowing the word Ma'am might tick her off. "You just told us not to be cocky, yet you're suggesting we brazenly go off and challenge some of the world's strongest trainers despite only being a student for a few months now? That sounds rather cocky to me."

Rylie gave a deep breath before continuing. "Not to say I don't see the value of challenging someone far above your skill level, but are you seriously suggesting that far of a jump is a good idea?" Narrowing her eyes, Rylie continued in a far flatter tone. "I'd be careful how you answer that by the way. I sure you know what's coming next if you simply say yes." She warned, giving Samantha a challenging stare.

Desmond Allen

Its About to Go Down

This class was really quite the show. The too cool teacher and one of the students were going at it and Desmond couldn't help loving it. He loved the power move that Sammy had pulled with the chair but that girl was not backing down, blatantly challenging (threatening?) Sammy, which Desmond had to admit was a power move of its own. It reminded him of how he and Daro had rose through the organizations ranks. Another thing that intrigued Desmond was that they could challenge the teachers here for badges. It had never occurred to him that battles here could be considered official matches and therefore possible to make progress towards league championships. He assumed any battles would just be basic sparring.

Back to the plot thickening though, as much as Desmond loved the standoff, he was getting a little irritated with how the student was treating Sammy. He was all for discussion and confidence but this was threatening to get out of hand. No doubt Sammy was rough around the edges and definitely overly sure of herself to a degree, but this girl was being outright disrespectful with that last comment.

Desmond couldn't help himself, he had to say something. He turned towards the girl sitting on her desk. "I doubt Sammy is saying we go off challenging the professors all willy-nilly. Rather that we should've maybe known by now that that was an option for later in our school careers, cause as you said we are fairly new trainers. But even so, if she did mean we should go off and challenge them, I don't see much of a problem. The professors here are professionals and good people and would never blatantly hurt our Pokemon to a dangerous point. Also, there's plenty of lessons to be learned from a loss to one of the best trainers the world has to offer, as one-sided as it may be, such as respect." He turned back towards Sammy, "I apologize for interjecting like that, I just wanted to say my piece."

Control

Sammy took a deep breath through her nose and reminded herself not to agree to favours from Flannery in the future, especially when she'd been drinking. Teach a class, it'll be fun! At this point she felt as though it'd be more fun trying to wrestle away the leek away from a Farfetch'd in the rain while she missing a shoe. "Alright, alright, listen," she held up a hand, "apparently this has turned into Gym Leaders 101 and I'm not into repeating myself so if you're the type to actually listen I'd say do it now."

At that it was like someone had given Sydney a direct command, she flipped to a new page of her notebook and sat poised, ready to scribe whatever pearls of wisdom this unconventional teacher had to offer. With any luck this would distract Rylie from whatever mad crusade she was on to get herself suspended...

"Yes," Sammy nodded, "Gym Leaders are - at least for the most part - highly skilled and experienced Pokemon Trainers. They could generally take a run at the League of their choosing and do very well - the simple fact is that quite a lot of Gym Leaders could easily fill in for a member of their regions Elite Four if they needed to. When I was here at the Academy I watched Misty, Cerulean Gym Leader from Kanto, cut through Team Rocket with a Mega Gyrados like they were nothing. I've also seen her battle a ten year old using a Staryu and a Psyduck that couldn't pick its own feet out of a lineup and she lost, although just barely. Any guesses why she didn't just bust out one of her powerful Pokemon and wipe the floor with that kid?"
"Oh," Sydney rocketed her hand into the air, "because it wouldn't be a fair match?"
"Eh, kind of," Sammy tilted her head in acknowledgement, "you're right but that's not the whole of it. Gym Leaders aren't there purely as these obstacles you have to beat to get into the League. If they were all the Trainers in League competition would be roughly the same strength, right? And although they're all of a certain calibre we can tell that some of them are much stronger and more experienced than others."

She took another sip of her coffee before continuing, being careful with how she phrased what she wanted to say. This wasn't her forte at all, she was a fighter through and through. It would have been a lot easier to show these kids what she meant but she hadn't known ahead of time this was going to be what they covered...

"Gym Leaders adapt the team they use depending on their opponent so that a battle against them will always be a challenge, no matter who it is. That's because they're there to help whoever they battle grow or learn something as a Trainer. Maybe you beat them on the first time and just have a hard fought match, or you lose and come back for a rematch after more training or coming up with a new strategy. Whatever way it works out the point is to get better - heck, it's why half the time Gym Leaders hand out TM's after you beat them. Whether they're here at the Academy or in their Gym, they're teachers. Except Surge, he's just a dick." She shrugged. "So you can challenge them now or you can wait until you feel ready. They're not going to throw their best at you, they're going to throw what they think is best for you your way, got it? If you get a Badge, awesome. If you don't, learn from it the same way you're supposed to be doing from everything on this island."

"As for you, old-man-hair," she gestured towards Ivrant, "I had the same thing when I first got here, with a Ground Type as well funnily enough. My Cubone wouldn't do anything except cry and use Endure - little guy was terrified of his own shadow because he'd been with an abusive Trainer until I," she cleared her throat, "rescued him. You can either try to help your Pokemon overcome its weaknesses or play into its strengths so it feels more comfortable. I mean, do both obviously, but you gotta start with one. I helped my Cubone get over the fear, but honestly, a Sandygast? Helping it feel confident with a smart defensive strategy might be the way to go on that."

"Don't worry about jumping in," she nodded to Desmond, "You weren't far off the mark about Gym Leaders. They're not going to put you through a wall just for the hell of it, that's not what they're about. Now, me on the other hand," she turned to Rylie with a grin, "I don't have to worry about playing nice. Kid, if you want to rumble after class grow a pair and challenge me. But stop being a brat in my class and just know that I don't play nice, I don't go easy and if the best lesson I can teach you is to know when you're in over your head I am happy for my Crawdaunt to Crabhammer all of your Pokemon into craters. Outside of Gym Leaders hell yeah, you can still challenge anyone you like, even if you try to hide it behind a shitty question. But think about your Pokemon instead of your own ego because you might find you've put them in a situation they aren't ready for."

Her grin became a little less wolfish as she looked to the rest of the class. "Any questions?"
