Gold and Brendan remain the best male PCs, IMO. Gold was certainly inspired by Red, but he still had his own distinctive look and wasn't a straight-up clone of him like Lucas, Hilbert, etc.
And, Brendan bore no resemblance to the previous boys, whatsoever, which is how new protagonists should be designed. The protagonist of RSE was not supposed to be the same one as either RBY or GSC, and RSE weren't even direct sequels like GSC. Brendan never had any reason to look like Red, and that's a good thing.
Did Brendan's white hat scare too many people off? It seems odd (and suspicious) that there was a sudden shift towards generic, samey-looking male PCs directly following him. Sad, if that was really the case.
