The Pyromancers: Fire-type Pokémon Club

Houndour definitely deserves a spot as a Pokemon of the week. I'm a dog person, so of course I naturally love dog Pokemon. Plus it's a fire type, and it's a dark type too which is pretty cool. Whenever I build a team in my games where I try to center it around cacnine Pokemon (like Mightyena, Absol, Manectric), Houndoom usually ends up being the star of the team, just because of the power the Pokemon holds. Gotta say, I really do love my fire types!

And I can't help but to agree with Endless, as soon as I saw the mega-evo I was enthralled with the idea of getting to use it in battle one day.

I saw part of an episode where Ash helped an injured Houndour and they were very slow to trust him, but the pack leader let him help. It was very cool to see both Ash's heart and the Houndour's loyalty to each other.

I had a shiny Houndour in Platinum, but I was a fool and when I reset my HeartGold I never transferred it out and it got erased (along with shiny Linoone, Sneasel, Golem...yeah, I'm smart but I'm very absent-minded) and I'm still extremely sad and hope I somehow manage to get one some day. I have a Houndoom in it now and it's awesome.

Pick two Fire-type Partner Pokémon: Magcargo & Charmander

Reason(s) for liking Fire-types: I love Magcargo and the charmander family line so I like the type for those reasons. I also like the moves that they have because they are generally beautiful to look at.

Answer to current topic: Sorry I don't have any artwork to show, I just wanted to quickly post my sign-up so I can be a part of the club :).

Nice to meet you all!

Welcome! No worries, I need to update it anyway, it's currently discussion on Houndour. I'll fix it tonight (and update the member lost, oops). Personally I wish Magcargo was a little better because I like the idea of a Fire/Rock-type. Too slow and can't cover it's weaknesses well. And Charmander, well, Charizard is amazing, that's all I really need to say.

Thanks for the welcome :) Magcargo does have a lot of weaknesses, but he's still my favorite as far as fire types go. He relies a lot on my other party members to do well in battles, and he does! If you don't mind Wicked3DS, I would like to battle you sometime. If you do then you can send me a PM with your friend code. Mine is in my signature.

I like hondour, I used Houndoom a lot in the past. They're both monsters in Special Attack and speed! However, they're so hard to stay alive, so they make good use of Destiny Bond :P.

I like Charizard as well. It's hard to find someone who doesn't like Charizard :o

Pick two Fire-type Partner Pokémon: Chandelure and Typhlosion

Reason(s) for liking Fire-types: Ever since as far back as I can remember, I've always found it essential to have a Fire-type on each and every one of my teams. They are a great source of unparalleled power and beauty, and most of their moves come with a chance of burning their target, which I find very useful during battles.

Answer to current topic:
Spoiler:

Also, Houndour! I've only used it once in the past and evolved it to a Houndoom, but my one and only experience with him has been nothing but excellent. It has exactly what I need in a good Fire-type sweeper: high special attack and speed, although its super low defense is something of a drawback. But all good things come with weaknesses as well, no?

Welcome! I love how you say "power and beauty" and then post that fantastic pic of Chandelure, which is one of my favorites that I need to get my hands on (never did find one in Black 2, but I really wasn't looking I guess. I agree totally about Houndoom, it's very strong and always gets the job done for me.

I fell down on the job last night and forgot to update the front page, long story short I got a fantastic deal on drums but ended up out late. It'll be done tonight, mark my words!

I love the design of Chandelure, but it scares me because it feels like a Houndoom but with a little better defense O_O. No matter what, my favorite Pokemon are almost always water type (I have no idea why this is), so you would think that I wouldn't be cautious around a fire type. But we all know that this fast candle-wielding Pokemon can also learn Energy ball, which is disastrous. Chandleure, I shake my fist at you! :P

The thing about Chandelure though is that it's less speedy as compared to Houndoom. Chandelure has an 80 base speed stat whereas Houndoom has 95. Also, Chandelure's defenses are much higher than Houndoom's with 90 on both stats as compared to Houndoom's mere 50 and 80. Don't forget that chandelier's beastly 145 special attack stat whereas the dog of doom only has 110! So if you think about it, Chandelure has a quite a lot more advantage in every area except for speed, which can be overcome with EV training. But you're absolutely right: you'd better be careful around it for sure!

Beastly! Who knew that a bunch of candles could instill a good level of caution upon its opponents? ha. One thing that surprises me though when it comes to fire types, is that a lot of people like to use Talonflame quite a bit. I haven't battled much with Talonflame or even researched its stats, but to me, it doesn't seem to be a pokemon that would capture the attention of many serious competitive trainers (people where every single IV must be accounted for). However, it does. Why is this? Its speed and special attack perhaps? Is this another Houndoom scenario?

I'm not a serious competitive battler and I have not personally used it before in-game, but I have a feeling people like using Talonflame because of its Gale Wings hidden ability. Who doesn't like having priority Flying-type moves? Haha. Also, it's speed does play a part, but since it has a slightly higher attack stat as compared to its special attack, I assume it's used more for its Flying-type moves which are mostly physical, unless you teach it Flare Blitz via move tutor.

I wasn't actually too fond of Talonflame at first, to be honest. To me, it looked sort of simplistic, and since it seemed to resemble some already-existing bird Pokémon, I didn't consider it to be much special. Though, my opinion on it had completely changed once I started using it in Showdown with Gale Wings ability. With that, you're always able to land hits first when using flying-type attacks, and Talonflame has access to a lot of them. One of the most favorable ones is Brave Bird; it does cause recoil damage, but you're still able to hurt your opponent with it. A ton.

Whoa. Don't judge me harshly, but this is the first time I've heard of Gale Wings :o. So that's the hype. It is a good ability without a doubt. It covers nicely the many weaknesses it has. I just have a Talonflame for hatching eggs and to fly everywhere haha.

Indeed, haha. Other than Fletchling family, no other Pokémon seem to have this ability currently, which makes them stand out.

Oh man I always get confused with my Talonflame lmao. I have a Talonflame that I use for hatching eggs and flying, then I have a shiny battle-ready Talonflame in my PC, and the current Talonflame I have on my Kalos battling team. Sometimes I'll send the wrong one out to battle haha.

Volcarona, bro. :P That's actually what I use, I was surprised to find it could learn Fly.

Competitive battling? I like Bellyzard. That's still a thing, right?

What the barnacle is a Bellyzard? haha. I'm surprised that you use Volcarona :o The bug type is strong I don't care what anyone says. It seems that the type still can't shake that stereotype since it's larvae days in generations 1 and 2.

Whoa lol Talonflame is getting lots of love <3 :P

Answer to current topic: I guess I just comment on Houndour? Anyway, his mega makes a good design more menacing and it suits him, he is supposed to be a demon dog.

Does anyone think this Mega Charizard Y set is good?

Flamethrower Modest Nature
Solar Beam
Ancient power
Dragon Pulse

Also I'm mad 'cause I will need to wait for Alpha Sapphire to use mega Charizard, MY SISTER STOLE MY MEGA STONE AND TRADED AWAY WITH MY SHINY VANILITE!
She took my 3DS and put it back, her plan was flawed, she left it on and caught her with my shiny whimshur in one of her boxes.

I love "what the barnacle." It's a Charizard with Belly Drum. More info here: https://www.smogon.com/dex/dp/pokemon/charizard

Welcome! I'll let the competitive freaks battlers handle the moveset (I like it for Drought and that's all I got). Otherwise, I only have one thing to say to you.

Your sister is either an evil soul or possessed by an evil demon. You might want to try exorcism, but it may be too late at this point.

That looks like a great set, Dylan! Though, one thing I could recommend is to perhaps replace Ancient Power with Air Slash. Former does help taking our opposing fire- and flying-types, but with latter, you should have no trouble defeating fighting Pokémon. Plus, it might also make your foe flinch and unable to strike any hit, which is great.
