The Starting Town

Alright, I am going to take a risk and make a semi-bold claim. Based on the information given in the 3 available trailers (English trailer, Japanese trailer and Coro-coro trailer) I strongly believe that the island shown in the footage is not just the first island, but the entire island itself is just the starting town (I.E. Littleroot, Pallet Town, ect).

    [PokeCommunity.com] The Starting Town

If you really look, it is easy to tell that the island is just one whole city! Theres the downtown area, a residential area leading up the mountain, one pokemon center, one cave and the professor's house at the very top.

Considering that it is the only island shown in the trailer and given the fact that it is the place where you recieve your starter pokemon, it is incredibly likely that the entire island itself is just the starting town, making it the biggest starting town in the series. There is even a 3rd person behind the player perspective in the city area, similar to in Lumiose in X and Y, which means that there are probably A LOT more 3D camera angles in Sun and Moon and in X/Y or ORAS.

    What do you guys think?

I think it seems a bit too extensive to be just a starting town. It's difficult to tell and I've been trying to figure this one out myself too. Initially I was thinking it was to the east nearby the beach like area, it would make sense seeing as how it is the most eastern sort of town and that's usually where the game begins. It wouldn't really make sense for anything other than the starting town to be so far out and it does fit in to the trailer where we saw the trainer running up the hill towards the first main town with the platform and professor's lab.

With not knowing whether there are more islands and what size those islands could be, it's hard to figure out where everything is right now with such little information. From what we've seen so far I'm thinking that this particular island contains the starting town, the first city and then towards the west where the more high-rise buildings are is where the trainers school and maybe the first gym is. Once you've got the first badge you backtrack a little to where the harbour/boathouse looking building is and you take a boat to the next island.

I think the downtown area is probably a city, and there might be a small town on the far side of the island that we can't really see. Despite the starter town seeming small, I wouldn't make the jump to saying that the entire island is one city. Like Blue said, we don't really have a sense of scale of the whole region, so it's hard to say that a whole island is a single city.

I get what you're saying, but it seems like almost everything is a bit different in Sun and Moon, I don't think it would be exessive at all! All of the buildings are too close together for it to be seperate towns/cities, especially if you compare the picture above with the gameplay footage, it would be like having another city on the other side of the street from your house.

If you pay careful attention during the Coro-coro trailer, it seems like the player's house is in that residential area that directly connects to the city and continues up the hill. The settlement on top of the mountain area is where the pokelab and the professor's lab are, you can see the platform in the middle from the trailer and the other structure outside of the city seems to be one large house or possibly some other kind of facility, and the shack on the beach is propably just a beach shack.

There are areas on the eastern side of the island, alongside the north-south running path, that look like they have tall grass and so does part of the area near the south-east tip. That tells me that there are routes and so there have got to be separate areas. The whole font side of the island might be one town/city, but that still leaves the middle, sides, and back of the island.

Are you guys forgetting Aspertia CIty in Pokemon BW2? It was a pretty large starting town. Even having its own Gym. I wouldn't count it out being 1 big town, but I think it is a town and a village.

This is what I think after the second trailer.
    Spoiler:

~ Orange Circle is the player's home.
~ The blue line is the path the player takes in the 2nd trailer.
~ The red circle is the Starting Town.
~ Purple Circle is the first city. (Which can practically fully be seen in 1 camera angle.)
~ The brownish circle is the waterfall that can just barely been seen in the 1st trailer while running through the village.
~ The Maroon lines that go through the island is the path. I think there is 4 routes. and 3 towns.

I don't know if we can use the term starting town. I think we should call it the starting island. We might have to do a few tasks around the island and then possibly challenge the gym. We could also come back at a later time. Like this could be the 6th Gym and we go south and back track to go north for the 7th and 8th gyms/islands.

    Spoiler:

I never saw this like that, but that make sens for me!
I wish it is, because that mean the map is gonna be super detailed and big (I think)
Honestly a small map wouldn't bug me much. The only thing I wish is less water then Hoenn pls

That's a good point, but Aspertia definitely wasn't as big as this place is, imo. It's massive and will probably seem a lot bigger as we actually explore it.

Actually, given the scale seen in the gameplay, its not as big as some people seem to think it is.

I've been campaigning for bigger starter towns. Obviously not Lumiose big, but more than just two or three houses with the only notable location being home and the lab. So I would love if we had something like this! Though it does seem a bit much, but that just gives me hope that if the starter town is that huge than the rest of the region would be extremely expansive and worth exploring!

Like someone said above, though, I'm willing to bet that it's more of a town and city. If that's true, then that definitely means several islands (I can't imagine they'd make one island with a town, route, and city, then two islands with four towns/cities each). Something I thought of: what if they change it up a bit so there aren't clear divides between cities, towns, and route? Maybe Island 1 has a town and a bunch of wooded areas, but the whole island functions as one big location? Instead of naming the town and routes, the island itself has the name?
Now that I think about it, that seems unlikely just for the sake of having Flying locations.

Has the theory about that little bay in the corner being Azure Bay been debunked yet?

No, but I don't think it is. The island is too small. I think it is just a water route leading to the next island. We probably have to take boats until we can get surf.

Unless you are talking about the one with the cave. I am almost 100% sure that is a no though. It would be a lot bigger if it was Azure Bay I think, and it wouldn't be closed off like it is.

And just for people to see, I posted this in another thread, this is the entire city in 1 camera. You can see every building.
    Spoiler:

And this is the character running, in which you can almost see every building. It isn't as big as people said. You can clearly tell what building is what form the map.
    Spoiler:

And this is on top of the hill. Again, it isn't that big. You can see the tip of the waterfall just barely.

I certainly wouldn't mind it to be one big area, but I'm also thinking it's likely one town and a city. It just seems a little... too big for a starting location. I know we have places like Lumiose, but that wasn't even fully accessible until quite a ways into the game. Who knows! We'll see.

Like you said, I can't easily imagine the starting town taking up one big island. But I presume our character's house might be on the beach shown at the bottom and we have to walk up a path with no grass to get to the Professor's town. We haven't had many occasions where we had to walk to another town to receive a starter, with only Sinnoh and Kalos having that honour.
