    I don't think that this is being discussed in another thread already....

    In X&Y you meet a traveling backpacker who after talking to him enough times will give you an object called the Strange Souvenir, and he claims he's from a region that's not one of the already existing 6 main series regions. It so far seems to serve no purpose in X/Y.

    But perhaps it has something to do with Sun and Moon? It's now likely that the region the backpacker mentions is the one that will be in Sun/Moon. Maybe the Strange Souvenir will have some use and/or be linked to the region's lore somehow? Might as well open the floor for speculation on it.
     
    I think it'd be quite interesting if it functioned as an event Legendary item, similar to Oak's Letter or the Azure Flute. What if there was a Legendary Pokemon locked away in a temple somewhere, and placing the Strange Souvenir in a conveniently-placed mysterious hole in the wall or at the base of the shrine opened a secret door and allowed you to battle with it? At least, I think that's one potential use for it if it links to Sun and Moon.
     
    Honestly, at this point in time I already consider this item an idea Game Freak had in 2013 but scrapped in the meantime.
     
    Honestly, I think that the region is based of Hawaii, the mysterious souvenir is a tiki, and it is all connected. It could just be me though because I have thought of some pretty crazy theories in the past.

    I mean, it would be a good implementation of said item if it's true.
     
    I firmly believe that that backpacker is talking about Sun/Moon region and not actually Hoenn. He mentioned, if I remember correctly, that we haven't seen his region yet but we'll see it soon enough. Of course, we have seen Hoenn before in R/S/E so I think he's not pertaining to that.

    Anyway, we'll see more of that strange souvenir. maybe it'll activate an event ingame. Who knows?

    I think it's safe to assume the backpacker wasn't talking about Hoenn but rather this new mythic region.
     
    Thinking about it, the strange souvenir might not actually be related to Sun and Moon at all, if they're set in a different part of Kalos as some people theorise. We might not have seen that part of the region but it's hardly some distance away, so it wouldn't add up.

    The basis of this is entirely whether or not Sun & Moon is set within Kalos or a new region, which as of yet has been undisclosed.

    Personally I think it is related to S&M but it's understandable given the mystery surrounding the new games and all.

    Not necessarily; it could still serve some function in the region despite not originating from it. Which I suppose makes my earlier point moot, but it's still food for thought. Maybe transferring it across could unlock a second item, which could then be used in a game in the future - next year, or the year after - set in the region it originates from? It'd be one hell of a buildup, but who would see it coming? By that point you'd even have a neat little backstory for the items as well, maybe!

    I could honestly see this, but then why bother still giving it out in the game? I think it's entirely possible that they had other plans for the item and then somewhere along the way they decided to perhaps re-purpose it for Sun and Moon.

    I really think we'll see it make a return with these games. It's too much of a coincidence that you receive it from someone who's from a yet to be discovered region, if you ask me.
     
    I always found the Strange Souvenir a huge mystery given the man who gives it to you is not from an existing region. Maybe this item turns out to be a statue that's native to the new region.

    I doubt this item would have no significance whatsoever, especially with the description it has. The NPC who gives you it says we will see the Region it is from soon enough, perhaps that was an early hint at the next generation? If the rumours that Sun & Moon are based in Hawaii, then it certainly resembles those Hawaiian tiki statues.
     
    My only question concerning the Strange Souvenir is, How are we going to get it in Sun/Moon? Like, if it plays a part in the story, then we should get it during the gameplay, but what if it's like Darkrai/Arceus' Event items? Will we have to wait for GF to release an event for it? If no, what if we don't get it in Sun/Moon? Will there be a way to transfer the Strange Souvenir from our copies of XY to Sun/Moon? It can't go through the Bank since the bank won't allow items.

    What if the item just looks like a Pokemon and holds no other value other than that? Could it have just been an easter egg to promote the coming game? Too many questions x_X

    I think it's just an easter egg. I mean, it's a souvenir, there must be plenty of those sold back at his region. They're just trinkets.
    I do think that it'll be tied to a legend. Maybe the third member of the trio (if we get another one), who most likely won't get a third version?
