Just a quick question. If the first Pokemon of your type available is not able to level up on its' own, due to no offensive attacks at the level it's caught at, can you use your starter to level it up until it learns a damaging move?

I'm pretty sure you can use your starter to train it until it can fight for itself. Or at least you could in the old thread, I'm not sure about this one. But I think you can.

Caught myself a Chinchou and went about to level it to Lv 25 so it had an electric attack

Strangly enough, the gym trainers gave me more trouble than the leader
Primape fell quickly to Surf(s)
As for Poliwrath, I strarted by paralyzing him, then I switched to my recently evolved Tentacruel who confused him. Then, Wrap and Acid did the trick :)
After that, I flew back to Olivine and destroyed Jasmine with Quagsire
Even Steelix didn't stand a chance despite a 9 level gap.
Then, I went to Lake of Rage and caught the red Gyarados.
I'm now with Lance in the Mahogany Team Rocket Headquarters

Version: FireRed.
Type: Normal.

Progress::

• Ran into a sleeping snorlax. Used the pokeflute to wake him up, battled a little with my raticate Twister, and caught him. Nicknamed "Volcano".
• Made it to Fuchsia City where I battled Koga and defeated him.
• Played around in the Safari Zone for awhile. Wanted to stay long enough to catch some real exciting Normal-types, but lost patience. Obtained HM Surf and peaced out.
• Taught Volcano HM Surf. Surfed down to Seafoam Islands for the training experience, but didn't stick around too much there. (Also reminded me that I have yet to get HM Strength...woops, better get on that.)
• Flew to Pallet Town on my Farfetch'd, Ch'ding, and surfed down on towards Cinnabar Island.

Tempest: male persian, lv. 46.
Monsoon: male pidgeot, lv. 45.
Twister: female raticate, lv. 45.

Well, I don't think you actually have to play FireRed for a Steel monotype, since it didn't exist in Gen I. (Dark type as well)

You can get your first pokemon before the first gym (trade in Violet City for the Onix, who evolves into Steelix), so per the rules you can't hack anyone in. -Saw Prof. Oak and the usual crap. Told him my name is Baron.
-Got kicked out of the house by Mom and attacked outside by a pesky Marill.
-Went to the Lab and chose Totodile. My first slave.
-The usual crap. Errands, etc. Went to Mom to receive her blessing.
-Went to Cherrygrove Town and was harassed by a dirty old man pretending to be a gent. Given Running Shoes and Map as compensation (like it was enough).
-Went to Mr. Pokemon's house, killing all who oppose me along the way.
-Got ordered by Mr. Pokemon and Prof. Oak.
-Ordered by Prof. Elm (again!) to go back.
-Encountered the thief along the way and was called a noob. Killed his weaking of a Pokemon in return.
-Returned and was mistaken by the perennially late police as the thief. Lyra defended me. (Like I need it. I can beat the crap out of him.)
-Was forced by the irritating police to tell the name of the thief: Blitz.
-Gave the Mystery Egg and gave me the idea of destroying the gyms.
-Went again to Mom for a financial plan.
-Went to Violet Town, destroying all wild Pokemons and enemy Teams and captured a Bellsprout along the way.
-Forced the kid in Violet City to trade his Onix for my Bellsprout.
-Destroyed the Sprout Tower and all of its trainers, while also grinding Rocky the Onix.
-Destroyed the Violet Gym with multiple Rock Throws.
-Ordered again by Prof. Elm to carry the Egg.
