Thoughts on event exclusives

After dragonomega made a similar topic on roaming legendaries, I thought another feature deserved such a topic. So, event exclusive Pokémon. Mew, Celebi, Jirachi etc. What are your thoughts on this feature?

Do you like this feature? Do you think this feature adds to the game by making getting certain Pokémon the ultimate bragging rights, or bogs it down? Is there something you would change about this feature? Do you have (legit) event Pokémon? Also, what do you think about using cheating devices to get these Pokémon?

    As for me...

    Do you like this feature?

I hate this feature with a passion, even more than I do roaming legendaries. Making some Pokémon completely unavailable while completing the Pokédex is a big part of the games' premise is just like selling an incomplete jigsaw puzzle while making the missing pieces available only on certain days in certain stores.

The only generation in which it was more or less OK was the first one, because the only event exclusive, Mew, was at the very end of the Pokédex. Nowadays (as parodied in a Pokémemes image I made a week ago -[link], sorry for the shameless plug) we can have a Pokédex that has ten obviously blank spaces, up to six in a row, but still somehow considered "complete", which is of course ridiculous.

Do you think this feature adds to the game by making getting certain Pokémon the ultimate bragging rights, or bogs it down?

It was acceptable in generation 1 and maybe 2, because the only way to make event distributed Pokémon special was to make them separate species. Pokémon distributed via events now have moves that aren't normally available, ribbons, are sometimes shiny, and are contained in special Cherish Balls, so in terms of bragging rights I think we can be covered without the need to make them separate species.

This useless feature is above all a thorn in the side of those who want to play for Pokédex completion, again, a big part of the main premise. As I mentioned above, how can a Pokédex with ten (I guess it's thirteen now) empty spots be considered as complete? It also hurts the games in the long run, if you ever want to replay Gen 3, 4 and 5 games and try to complete the Pokédex, let it go because it can't be done.

Add to this the fact that some events are completely unavailable in most of the world (Azure Flute, anyone?) , and you get a completely unnecessary feature that adds nothing to the games and renders one of their main objectives impossible to achieve.

Is there something you would change about this feature?

Just like what I said about the roaming Pokémon, the best way to improve this feature would be removing it altogether. But I have two other ideas that could be interesting:

    • Reorganize the National Dex every generation by putting event exclusives at the end, or, better, exclude them from the numbered list altogether; that way the missing event Pokémon wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb in a "complete" Pokédex.
    • Another way could be adding special NPCs in the game that would give out items that allow catching event exclusives once a game is connected with a game from the next generation. For instance, it would be cool if transferring Pokémon from Gen 4 to Gen 5 could unlock the Azure Flute and the other items of the kind in D/P/Pt.

Do you have (legit) event Pokémon?

Yes, two that I got with Wi-Fi events: a Deoxys and a Genesect.

Also, what do you think about using cheating devices to get these Pokémon?

My stance on this is: if a game belongs to a generation which is no longer the current one, and thus no more events are held for it, then Action Replay is OK to use. That's why I waited until X and Y were released to unleash the Action Replay on my Gen 5 games.

I love it. It draws people out of their homes to collect more pokemon for some events, and a lot of the events are not rare pokemon, just rare combinations of abilities and moves. Or they're shiny. I have two Giratina now, one is a shiny from an event. I love it.

Honestly it has always PO'ed me I live in Nebraska why should people in New York, LA and London receive pokemon that I'm denied, I've only ever traded with myself by owning two copies of a game at a time. I've heard that you can send your copy of Emerald to the UK and have the UK Pokemon Company add an Island where you can capture Lugia, Ho-oh and another island where Mew can be
captured. But given that it's been years since those games were new I doubt they still provide that service. If anyone is interested in trading and battling FR/LG I have VBA with link capability.

I think with the advent of Wi-Fi the notion of event Pokemon being the rare and special Pokemon that everybody wants has been diminished.

I hate it. I rarely get games soon after they're released (they're expensive so I usually wait for the prices to go down, and by that time the internet will have walk-throughs and tricks). I got Pokemon Soulsilver three years after it was released and guess how many events they have going on then? NONE! So no cool Pokemon for me, besides hacking.
Plus, in Pokemon Black, there was an event for a C-Gear skin of Zoroark. I love Zoroark! And guess what? I missed the event! Grr. . .

I like event exclusives and I really wish that Nintendo would run more of the older events such as Celebi, Jirachi, etc for everyone to have another go at getting them. That said, I don't like when events are held at certain places as opposed to being wi-fi events. Not everyone has access to these stores in which the events are held so more people end up missing out on them. If all events were wi-fi exclusive, this would give us trainers a much better chance of getting these Pokemon and becoming one step closer to completing the Pokedex.

Like a lot of people I hate events where you have to go somewhere to download a pokemon as they never came anywhere near where I live in Scotland. Wi-fi events are better as lots more people could get the pokemon.

I have mixed feelings towards this. I live right near a GAME, meaning in-store events are easy to get hold of. (Since they finally got off their arses and decided to do them :/) Wi-Fi events are easy for me now, since Pokémon decided to support WPA Wi-Fi as opposed to just WEP. So I never got any events up until Black and White. This was annoying, as most of the Sinnoh events have not been re-released and many people were like me - too advanced a connection... Also, it kinda p*sses me off when there's no actual event to go with it. As far as I know, the last event that required some sort of in-game interaction to catch was Victini. Genesect had a triggered event but it wasn't necessary to get the Pokémon itself. Come on GF, we want more things like the Shaymin event, or the Darkrai event..... please?

I hate event-only things. they're practically impossible to get.

    Gotta go with Natnew's reaction.

Where I live the very first Pokémon event they ever done was the recent Shiny creation trio. Anywhere else is like taking forever to get there. At least 3-4 hours by car and my parents or brothers doesn't own a car anymore so even if i can get someone to get me there I still need to pony up the gass and those stores to get those event Pokémon are usually filled with a bunch of annoying kids. So yeah, I pretty much hate it.

Gamefreak should just do event Pokémon via Global link or something, make it comfortable for everyone. And who whom missed those event? Well, not the problem of someone but your own. And this coming from someone without Wifi connection at home, just a plain cable.

I don't understand what GF actually accomplish by distributing these guys through GameStop. In Ireland, events have been abolished waaaaaaay back, so I haven't a hope of getting anything released only in stores like that. I didn't get White until about March of this year, so I missed most of the Event Pokemon. They're silly and a waste of time.

The Wifi thing, fine, but only just. Seriously GF, Y U so ANNOYING?
