Chapter 1: END
"Shit…" the purple haired woman muttered with an uneasy expression of both nervousness and anger, rising her right arm where she had an older version of the PokéGear the kids had. It was red and a little rusty in the lid, but it seemed to work fine. Bruno thought perhaps the two thugs used to be rookie trainers that never graduated since they didn't seem to have a license and considering the way the woman talked about Cape College during the former battle. The PokéGear could've been stolen as well, but that was unlikely since it was very old.
The masked man started laughing. "Oi, girl! What the hell was that!?" He shouted to Debbie, who was still nervous and processing the final result of the battle giving no attention to her opponent. "We have to do this again sometime! This was the best battle I had since I joined this damned team! I was really missing battles like this one!" he kept laughing out loud, but the girl ignored him looking at him only once, but then returning to her own thoughts.
"Shut up! It's not funny." his partner interrupted, she sighed and continued in a lower voice "Another group is coming soon… Kurogane won't— What are you two waiting for, uh!? You beat us already, get going!"
"Wait, what!? We can go on!?" Debbie said with genuine surprise, suddenly regaining her consciousness and her previous energy. She turned back at Bruno with a smile. He knew what that look meant, it was the same look she had when they met at Cape College for the first time and the one they had when they met in Route 24 last night. "Oh no", he muttered to himself, closing his eyes and shrugging, it was inevitable. She held his arm tight and dragged him across the bridge, walking as fast as she could and leaving the thugs behind waiting for the next group.
The road across Nugget Bridge was calm… or it would've been weren't it for Deborah's constant chatter and Bruno's thoughts screaming and mixing up inside his head, so no it wasn't a calm road for him. He could see the soothing scene of Route 24 and Cerulean's river which he prefered to call the Nugget River, which pretty much helped him not to go insane at the moment
"What are we going to do once we get to Cerulean?" Deborah asked as she dragged the boy around.
"I guess we can begin with stop dragging me like that, it sounds like fun." he answered in a sarcastic tone "Then I'll probably run away from you in hopes of not seeing you ever again."
"Ha! Yeah, sure, whatever you say. You wouldn't even last the first block and I could catch up with you by only walking." the girl laughed. She stayed quiet for a bit, until suddenly she jumped screaming with emotion. Bruno was caught off guard both by the sudden scream and the unexpected jump, that he stumbled and fell down, gladly Deborah released his arm the moment she jumped or she would've fallen too. "Oh, I know what we can—! What are you doing on the ground?"
"I don't know, you tell me." He answered as he rubbed his hurt arm and slowly started getting up.
"Uh…?" the girl looked at him disconcerted, but her face quickly changed to her usual smile. "Well whatever. Let's have a battle!"
"Right now? Really?"
"No, fool! After lunchtime, what do you say?"
"I mean, maybe we—"
"Then it's settled!" She interrupts "We'll have a battle today afternoon!"
"That's not what I… forget it." Bruno started complaining, but he knew by Debbie's face it would be totally useless, she wanted that battle. On second thought a friendly battle with her wasn't a bad idea either. "What are we going to do until then?"
"I'm going to challenge the gym!" she answered confidently, Bruno looked at her with an unnamused expression, something like saying I knew it and Seriously?. "I don't care what Professor Palm said, didn't you see Pancho's performance back there? He was great, and I still have another pokemon with me! There's no way I'm gonna lose."
"I think we should organize things a little bit… let's see, the map says there's a PokéMart here and a…" he looked back at his friend except she wasn't there anymore. Of course, she would normally escape the moment she hears the word organize. They didn't even trade their Pokégear numbers, so they wouldn't know when and where the battle would take place... Whatever, he was apparently free now and the road was quieter than before. The first thing he's doing once he reaches Cerulean is buying some Potions and Pokéballs in the PokéMart that was like an hour from Nugget Bridge, then he would heal his pokemon and take a look around the city after lunch and hope he finds Deborah on the road.
Cerulean was a small and serene city and apparently there was not much to do here compared to Saffron, but it did look as a good place to live in since Bruno prefered calm places. It had a minimalist architecture and sett paved roads, nothing out of the ordinary or at least not from the southern edge of Nugget Bridge. If there was something that would catch the eyes of many tourists and visiting trainers (and it DID caught Bruno's eye), it was the big building at the east of the city, one could see it even at the distance; according to Bruno's map that was the Cerulean Dragon-Type Gym, it was a tall, majestic structure that pretty much spoke for the serenity of the entire city. Bruno would've gone there, but there was no time for sightseeing now, so he walked his own way forward where the map told him the PokéMart would be.
