Phew! My rival was tough as nails! That Bayleef was pure evil, but I managed to take it down eventually with a Hypnosis from Poliwag, then switching in Croconaw to use Fury Cutter. My team is all at lvl. 18, including a Tentacool now, and I'm trying to catch a Psyduck.

EDIT: Caught a Psyduck, called it Donald.

after a day or two, i started playing ruby again and here is my progress:
-went to lylcove city
-beat brendan
-defeated team magma on mt. ember
-caught an another tropius as a hm slave
-went to sateport and spoke with capt. stern
-went back to lilycove and defeated team magma there
-got hm dive
-defeated lisa and tate
-went to sootopolis
-defeated archy in the secret hideout (the one you have to use dive)
-defeated groudon
-trained a bit before the last gym
-defeated the 8th gym
-went through the victory road
-defeated wally with ease
-trained a bit before the final four_
-sydney was easy killed mightyena, cacturne, sharpedo with altaria and absol, shiftry with pelipper

I've reached Olivine and I'm struggling to whittle my team down. I have Croconaw, Chinchou, Staryu, Poliwhirl, Quagsire, Psyduck and Azumarill. I cannot figure out who to drop - especially with Octillery, Dewgong and Corsola available later on. I'm leaning towards a team of:

Feraligatr
Lanturn
Quagsire
Octillery
Golduck
Poliwrath

But then I leave out Azumarill.... and he's so cute!

EDIT: Just realised Remoraid isn't available in Crystal. Damn. I guess it's down to Azumarill and Corsola to fight for that last place. Unless I leave out Feraligatr....

Oh, and Chinchou has just evolved.

I just beat Crasher Wake. It was incredibly easy, Pikachu OHKOd all his Pokemon, even Floatzel.

after finishing ruby i started playing platinum:
-started my platinum game
-named myself Kika (as I always do)
-named my friend Fail xD
-chosen chimchar as my starter, because turtwig and chimchar would have weaknesses against me later in the game
-beat Fail with chimchar and done all the prof. rowan stuff
-caught a starly lvl 4 and trained it a bit
-got to jubilife city and got town map and poketch
-got to orebugh city and went to the mine, seen the leader using rock smash
-defeated roark with my staravia - 1 times x defend, attack and dire hit on first geodude, 6x double team and used 2 potions

i called him Fail too, just because he does xD
seriously, i OHKOd each of his pokemon, even Roselia which has type advantage, in all battles against him (except for Jubilife)
Maybe this was because i'm overleveled because my team only consists of 2 Pokemon, but maybe he does just fail...

...And i'm still at Mt. Coronet, this thing takes sooo long >_>
 
Update:

I caught a Magikarp with the Old rod and trained him on trainers (VS seeker and switching) till he evolved.
Taught Gyarados Water Pulse, Secret power and Bite
Taught Wartortle Brick Break.
Beat the electric gym EASILY!
I one hit KOed all of it's pokemon except Raichu, which used Thunder wave.
He used a full heal and I could KO.

Update galore! I beat Whitney with the old Hypnosis/Fury Cutter technique, Morty with Croconaw's Bite and Psyduck's Confusion, and Chuck with confusion again. Realised that Psyduck takes way too long to evolve. Ditched Poliwhirl and caught Corsola. Took down Jasmine with Quagsire. I headed to the Lake of Rage and accidentally killed the Red Gyrados, but I wasn't too bothered. The Rockets were easy enough and Pryce was a joke. Went through Ice Path and defeated Clair with Ice Punches from Gatr and Sparks from Lanturn. I've reached the Pokemon League now, and I'm just buffing up my Pokes a little before sweeping through the Elite Four (should be easy).

Final Team (unless I decide to change it again):

Quagsire

Azumarill
Golduck

Question - I'm playing on an Emulator, so I cannot trade to evolve. If I legitimately caught a Seadra and trained it up, and then hacked in a Kingdra at the exact same level and moveset, would that be OK? If so, I'll drop Azumarill for Kingdra, I can see Red's Venasaur being a bitca.
 
Went all the way up to the Spear Pillar, beat Mars and Jupiter in a completely epic battle, at the end both my Pokemon had red HP; Luxray was sleeping and Pikachu had only 1 or 2 Thunderbolts left. Beat cyrus, he was easy. OHKO'd all his Pokemon (But Crobat outspeeded Luxray and did some damage before it died). Got to Sunnyshore. Found the Thunderstone. Evolved Pikachu. Beat the Gym. Got the HM. Saved.

You can use VBA TradeLink to trade, just Google it and you will be able to trade. But, you need another game to trade (like gold for example)

-levelled up croagunk some
-got the badge in pastoria, beating Crasher wake

-completed iron island quest, croagunk evolved in the process, though I made it wait 1 level so it got poison jab first(poison may not be a great attacking type, but it does neutral damage against certain otherwise very threating enemies)

-continued riding back and forth until riolu's happiness maxed
-fed it 1 rare candy so it levelled up exactly once and I got level 2 lucario

I can? Never knew that.... OK, I'll get right on it.

EDIT: Well, I've downloaded it, unzipped, downloaded a Gold ROM and played up until I can use the trade room. I've opened up two VBAs and opened up Gold in one and Crystal in the other, and I've sent both my players to the pokemon center - but when I say "yes" to trading, it says "Please wait...... your friend is not ready" on both games. I'm doing something wrong, aren't I? Do you know how to use this thing properly?

EDIT of an EDIT: OK, I've worked out that you need two versions of the same emulator, seeing as mine is apparently slightly old and doesn't support linking (even though I'm using version 1.7.2). However, when I run my Crystal game in another emulator it acts like I have no saved game. What can I do?

I'm standing in front of Victory Road now, with both my Pokemon in Level 59.
The surprising thing is that i only needed 14:51 up to this point, and Pearl is a horribly slow game....
Victory Road will be annoying, my Team has a weak against bulky fightning types and these things are everywhere in there. And then there is the Elite 4... I'm already planning how i should fight them and it seems that the only things i'll probably have serious trouble with are Bronzong, Roserade and especially Garchomp (Berta is incredibly Grass Knot weak)
I can't think about any way defeating Garchomp so i either have do a lot of grinding, use Revives till Garchomp runs out of PP or do some X-Abuse; I'm pretty sure i'll to one of the latter two, since i'm lazy
I think Spiritomb is pretty much setup fodder as long as it doesnt get Silver Wind Hax, so i'll probably go with the X-Items, i should have plenty of them in my bag and if not, i'll just buy some...

Went through Victory Road, beat Rival, trained Luxray and Raichu both to Lv. 63 (They were 60 and 62). Bought items. Deposited the slaves, but forgot to get Pachirisu from Daycare and the 2 Shinx with crappy natures from the Box as fodder. Beat Aaron with ease. Beat Berta, only Sudowoodo was a bit annoying, but just a bit. Beat Flint, at the End Raichu had -4Atk and -2Def, but i won. Beat Lucian, this needed several attempts till my Luxray-XItem-Crunch strategy finally worked, Lucain always got Hax. Forgot to heal save before entering Cynthia's room. No good conditions.
I wanted to power up with the X-Items, but Spiritombs Embargo ruined this plan (i thought this affects stuff like Leftovers, but apparently it's different) Cynthia changed to Gastrodon when Spiritomb was halfway down. Gastrodon survived one Grass Knot and killed Raichu, but died after a Return from Luxray. then Garchomp came. It's a physical attacker, so my reviving strategy caused the damage done by it getting lower and lower, and i also got some Crunchhax (-Def), Parahax (from Static) and Dragon Rush (I intended it to spam EQs but for some reason he used all his moves, stupid...) missed a lot, so it died pretty fast. Lucario, as a mixed attacker, was a bit more of a problem, but always when it used Dragon Pulse, my Pokemon survived and so i was able to 2HKO it with Raichu's Brick Break (that damn thing outspeeded Luxray >_>) then the weakened Spiritomb came back and died fast, Milotic died fast too (of course) and then she sent out her last Pokemon, Roserade (why did she send out Roserade that late, it has a type advantage?). Roserade survived a Return from Luxray, and killed it with Sludge Bomb, failed to KO Raichu with Extrasensory after i had used a Revive and then Raichu killed it with Dig.

You open your UMC game normally, but with the other one you need to load it from the "File" menu. it should load normally. And, you also have to change one of the 2 emu's joypad and untick "Pause when inactive window" That way you can move tham at the same time without the game pausing when you click the other emu.

It should go fine now
