Maristella Reilly & (Zane Reav)
"My ... my name's Aris," Aris replied, having a better look at Zane. His eyes were ice blue, making him so stereotypically handsome with his hair it was almost disturbing. She pondered this topic for a second, before trying to look for answers. "You wouldn't happen to have any idea of why I'm in the infirmary, would you?"
The girl who introduced herself as Aris seemed to not know why she was here, in the infirmary. It struck Zane as a bit odd, but didn't seem to be too hard to believe. Normally, he wouldn't even give the time of day in such a situation, but he had already been in a bit of a suspicious turn of events already, so he didn't want to draw anymore attention to himself. "I'm sorry; I really don't know why you're here. Do you remember what happened before you woke up?"
Aris thought about it for a second, recalling something about the sky and whether clouds were more related to air or water. She quickly stopped herself from falling down that train of thought again, before something came to her. "Oh, something about the evaluations. I was searching for the person I needed to do something with. I don't know if I found him or not, though. I think I would probably remember something like that. There's a chance, I guess. It's happened before with boring people. The only thing I know for sure is that my head kinda aches." She gingerly brushed her fingertips along the back of her head, only to find it hurt significantly less than it had before. They must have some kinda witchcraft medicine here or something.
Zane wasn't exactly sure what could've happened to her, but one thing was certain: she seemed to have some sort of head trauma. The reason he figured it was head trauma was pretty obvious, but the symptoms reminded him of something his dad called a concussion. He remembered that people who had suffered concussions often felt confused, dazed, and sometimes had short term memory loss, which could explain why she didn't seem to know what happened. Right before Zane was about to speak, a quick shuffling noise came from the bed beside him, then a voice followed.
"Hey! This is an infirmary, not a playroom. Here I am bleeding out, minding my own business while trying to rest and all I hear is arguments and questions. Now, could you be quit or just leave. And where's the nurse?! I'm dying over here."
The little outburst came from Christian, who then fell immediately back into his unresponsive coma-like state. Zane just sighed at his comments, and returned his attention to Aris. "Maybe we should continue our conversation outside. This is an infirmary, after all." he whispered.
Aris nodded, feeling a bit guilty. She tried to sit up in her bed, but a sharp pain flooded her brain and she collapsed back down. "Maybe a few more minutes?" Aris asked. "Just let me rest for a second so I can get just get my bearings again." Aris then turned to the black-haired boy, still unsure of his identity. As far as she could tell, he was an automatic robot who yelled at those making a fuss. There were stranger things in this institute. He probably wasn't a boy, I mean, who fell asleep on their stomach? Aris thought it would be pretty useful, for sure, but Aris wasn't quite sure why he didn't go off when she had just woken up and Zane and that other boy were ... doing something she didn't quite understand, but it was probably loud. "What is he, anyways? He seems broken." Aris questioned, gesturing towards the boy.
"Don't mind him, he's just, you know, dying. I'm sure he'll be better once the nurse comes in. That reminds me, where is the nurse? I'd bet she could answer your questions a lot better than I could." Zane paused. He was a bit perplexed as to why she phrased her last statement the way she did. Was she under some delusion that Christian wasn't normal? Did she see their match earlier, because that was the only thing that Zane could've figured she meant. His brow gave away a very slight furrow, but not enough of one to break his illusionary glee. "So, wait a second. What do you mean 'what is he'? He's just a mancer like you and me."
Aris assumed Zane was being sarcastic with his first statements, as that was a bit overexaggerating to call it dying. She was a bit interested in the next bit of the question, though "I mean like, I've seen a lot of crazy stuff in Vale, but nothing mechanical. Especially not mechanical mancers." Aris paused in thought. Maybe the mancer was part robot? What was that called? A cyber? Yeah, something like that. "Actually, there was the cage thing, but that isn't quite the same." Each arena she saw was based off an element, but she couldn't figure out what that one was, as it seemed the close quarters were blatantly unfair to everyone. Maybe a sort of neutral thing?
"Which of the four elements is he?" Aris questioned, before something occurred to her. "Which are you, actually?" She was surprised that Zane didn't mention it as he mentioned his name. In this school, she felt it was something you would just do naturally, like how when you were younger, you would naturally say your age with your name, because that was what was considered important. Then again, she didn't do it either. "I'm a watermancer, by the way."
Zane was becoming increasingly aware of Aris' naivety, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing as muc has it was useful. Ways to string her along would be many times more numerous for such an individual, but for now he'd maintain his goody two shoes bit. "I think that you may be talking about the metal users. I remember seeing someone turning parts of their body into metal, which is also what I'm guessing the cage is supposed to be for."
The next set of questions she had were a bit harder for him to answer, seeing how he had just learned about himself right before entering the infirmary. He wanted to enlighten her in a way that wouldn't come off as showy, but the simple fact was that his and Christian's elements were showy in their nature. "Well, I don't think he's any of the normal elements. That's what one of the teachers said, at least. I think his element is something like darkness. As for me, I'm a user of light. For example," he paused to start up a Flashbang. The glow of the spell began, but before it could detonate he ended the spell. "I can glow." he laughed. "Pretty cool, huh?"
Aris listened intently to Zane's not-lecture, curious about this magic thing. At the end, she considered it a little, before asking. "So you and him are unique, like light and dark sworn enemies slash best friends from all of the movies and books? That's pretty cool, I guess." Considering she hadn't really seen any magic in action, she wasn't sure whether to be impressed by lightbulb-Zane or not. She mused over everything Zane had told her quietly, twirling her hair around her finger, before speaking up. "I still don't get that metal thing, though."
Not only did she seem to be a bit naive, but strangely she seemed stubborn as well. That was more of a problem to Zane than anything. In a world of magic he'd figured anybody would believe almost anything, but he guessed that there were probably more than a few people like Aris who wouldn't believe it till they saw it themselves. With little to talk about on the remaining subject he started to wonder what they could talk about. A few things came to mind, but ultimately he was stumped. His mind reverted back to seeing if Aris could stand up now that she had rested a bit longer. "By any chance do you think you can stand now? I can help you if you want."
Aris blinked, before trying to sit up again. Her head still ached a bit, but it was significantly better. Her body seemed in fine condition, though, so she slowly tried sliding off the bed. It was only at this point she realized she was still wearing her bright yellow sneakers. That was strange that she didn't notice earlier, as the weight probably should've felt strange. Aris took a few tentative steps, her arms stretched out like she was trying to walk for the first time. Afterwards she paused, looked thoughtful, and nodded. "I should fine. Thanks, though." She carefully walked to the entrance of the infirmary, glancing down the hallway before turning to Zane sheepishly. "I don't actually know where to go from here, though. I don't remember how to get back to the arena place or anywhere else."
Relief struck Zane when he saw that Aris could stand on her own. He only said he'd help to continue his facade, but as she started to walk out of the infirmary she impeded his plans. Since he'd already offered to help, he was left with little choice in the matter, so naturally he decided to oblige, reluctantly of course. "No problem, I think I have a pretty good grasp of the school's layout." He took a few steps towards the door, glancing back at Christian for a moment before a loud beep sounded over the intercom.
"Attention new students, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. I repeat, please gather on the second floor near the classrooms. Once there you will be given your classroom number and for those who have yet to settle their living arrangements they will be handled appropriately."
Aris looked towards Zane. "I don't suppose you know how to get to the second floor. Or are we already on the second floor?"
"Nope, we're still on the first floor." he mused. "I do remember passing some stairs on the way here, so I'd bet that would be a good place to start." He gestured towards the door, trying to imply the whole ladies first way of thinking.
Aris carefully walked out, still a little unsteady and missing Zane's hint. She turned to him and asked, "So, which way was it?"
Zane should've known better than to assume Aris would catch his hint. He walked out the door first. Once out in the halls he gestured her to follow him, but this time he didn't leave it at that. "Follow me, it's this way." Hopefully, she would do as he said, but regardless he walked down the hall. He glanced back, once again, to see if she had indeed followed him like he asked.
Aris dutifully followed Zane like he asked, glancing about the hallway as she did. The hallway looked like a standard school hallway, she supposed. Maybe a little fancier than usual (although fancier than usual meant not stained with blurred out graffiti), but pretty normal. She wondered how old the school was. She had saw a lot of older kids, so that meant they weren't the first generation, but there wasn't much more than that. As she wondered about how old mancing traced back to (maybe those fantasy books she had read about were really nonfiction?), soon the odd pair of them arrived at the stairs. Zane didn't hesitate in climbing up, and Aris followed afterwards. It only took a few moments for them to reach the second floor, and it didn't seem like there were that many people walking around yet.
Upon a little more investigation, Zane noticed a man at an oddly placed desk a bit further down the hall. He recognized as the man to be the one who had escorted him and Christian earlier. One Paul Sandford, as he recalled. Immediately, Zane thought that he was the person they needed to see. They both continued down the hall approaching the teacher sitting at the desk. Unlike before, he just smiled and asked them for their names, even though he more than likely already knew their names. "I'm Zane Reav, and this is..."
"Maristella Reilly," Aris added as Zane paused, obviously at a lost to her full name.
The teacher looked through a few sheets on the desk, finally looking back at the students. "How about that. You're both in class 101. You can find the room a few doors down on the left. You'll find another teacher in there who will instruct you further." Zane nodded while Aris gave a small smile in thanks. Together they headed to the classroom, while Aris wondered about the strange numbering system in this place. Who put classroom 101 on the second floor, anyways? Then again, maybe there weren't any classes on the first floor ... But there was the infirmary, which was still a room, so it should've been numbered. What was the infirmary numbered? Was it even numbered?
Quickly they found the room, as it was indeed just a few doors down. A man, probably a teacher, was leaning against door frame. "Hello - my name is Dr. DeMuere, take a seat." Aris nodded in acknowledgement as she followed his instructions, picking a desk somewhere near the front-middle of the room and sitting down, while Zane also nodded and obliged by taking the window seat in the far back.
