    THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY

November 11, or what has come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor Armistice Day - the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislature that was passed in 1938, November 11 was dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.' As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for U.S. Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971.

Finally on September 20, 1975, U.S. President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on November 11.

    Celebrating Veterans Day

If the November 11 holiday falls on a non-workday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday is observed by the federal government on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). Federal government closings are established by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management; a complete schedule can be found here. State and local government closings are determined locally, and non-government businesses can close or remain open as they see fit, regardless of Federal, state or local government operation determinations.

United States Senate Resolution 143, which was passed on August 4, 2001, designated the week of November 11 through November 17, 2001, as "National Veterans Awareness Week." Theresolution calls for educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary school students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans.

Please take a minute or two to remember your Veterans and their families.

Happy Veteran's Day to all who have served and risked their lives for the safety of their country. A lot of people owe them so much more than they could ever possibly give to them. .. :)

everyone should honor this day . so many people have sacrificed their sanity, their freedom, even their lives for us.

11/11 is my country's national holiday. I never heard it being veteran's day in other countries...

Same! we were really quiet. all of our class giggled when a siren went off. I didn't think it was funny. oh and I honor all the vets. they risked thier lives. My uncle was in the marine core.

Both of my grandfather fought in the Army. One fought in World War II, and the other fought in the Korean War.

These men and women risked their lives fighting for freedom everywhere, and I honor their sacrifice.

where i live we get the day off of school, and at 11:11 the town's church bell rings 11 times, and for a few minutes the entire town is silent, no cars honking, no kids yelling...very nice specially on a clear day.

Our school had a little ceremony, with the national anthem sung. I live in Australia so we honoured all the men and women who lost their lives or survived the wars fought for Australia. I don't know anyone who served during these wars but I thank them for their sacrifice so we can have a better life.

So what where you guys doing at 11.11.11 at 11:11am? For me, I was playing TLoZ: Oracle of Ages. :P

Well, my school had a 2-hour long assembly that featured one of the last survivors of the USS Indianapolis. Other than that, that's all we did.

    11/11/11 11 : 11 AM

Taking Physics test like a boss.

    11/11/11 11 : 11 PM

I yelled "ELEVEN ELEVEN ELEVEN ELEVEN ELEVEN!!!! LAST ONE OF THE DECADE!!!" - I bet I woke up a lot of people.

    Funnily enough, that's my birthday. xD;
    So yeah, I celebrated that.

In Australia, Veteran's Day is known as Rememberance Day. At 11am, we stand for 2 minutes of silence and such. Forever rest in peace, soldiers.

My mother's a veteran between the Vietnam War and Iraqi War—very lucky to get out with my sister in her belly (couldn't work in a machine shop if you're pregnant, now could you?) XD

I didn't get to actually celebrate veteran's Day because we live away from the rest of our family, but I did see something interesting. On a wall at my school, they posted pictures of students that graduated and became soldiers. I saw my brother's picture up on the wall. So I took a moment to wish him and his family the safest and the best of luck.

I really don't mean to be disrespectful to anyone on here or any veterans/soldiers but would it be possible to recieve a bit of information/acknowledgement of how this day is celebrated in other countries please? Many countries other than the United States treat November 11th as a day of rememberance and respect for all living or dead military personell, therfore I believe that they should be included in this post.

I understand that this website is operated from (and probably recieves the most traffic from) the U.S. yet there are users here from all over the world and it kinda bothers me that the rememberance that takes place in other countries on the same day is not mentioned.

I don't mean to offend anyone and if there already is a mention of the rememberance that takes place in other countries that I have missed then I apologise.

On the topic of how I spent 11/11/11, oddly I can't remember much about it other than the fact that I donated some money and wore a poppy with pride :)

i know this is late but i just want 2 thank the verterans 4 there help 4 our country!!!
