Was Crystal/emerald/platinum really necessary?

I just don't think gamefreak needed to make all these catalyst games except for collection value and special "gotta get every legendary!" value... In fact, i wonder if they could have sped along the new generation games by keeping resources on development instead of re-selling. who here didn't stave off the poke-hunger with spin-offs like pinball and dash (ugh...)

Maybe platinum, but only because there were so many legendaries. and since the DS doesn't look like dying anytime soon. I'm just impatient for games to come quicker, so stop making remakes with slight differences!!

are you with me, or think otherwise?

    ::EDITED::

Ok, we see that there are improvements added on.

    BUT
what if you could DOWNLOAD it instead right onto the game in which you already invested heavily in? we are in a internet age! If there are wifi mystery gifts, give me some downloadable updates!
Diamond and Pearl make me want to kill myself because of the slow surfing speed.
so, maybe a free update for a bad idea on nintendo's part, fix it up.
but I might accept payable content like new sidequests with cutscenes (like a groudon/kyogre/rayquaza face off) or entire areas like a expanded battlefrontier. Since nintendo needs money, cant they at least make it easier than starting anew with a whole new game, and have games that can be added on to anywhere and anytime??

I agree entirely that they are pointless, but if it makes money that's just what they'll do.
What I think they shoud've done is have Red and Blue be just that, and instead of FireRed and LeafGreen, make a single remake with the additional gimmicks and call it Yellow, then at least it's somewhat worthwhile. This said though, remakes on the whole are redundant too; but as it goes Nintendo are simply in a good position versus the massed consumers, able to tap on nostalgia like this.

    You forg...ffffffffffuuu-

I was under the impression that Y/C/E/Pt were released to include special features or things that were left out in the original games. Some of them include aesthetic or storyline changes as well, and if you're worried about completing the Pokédex, you'll need one (or both) of the original paired games. There are special edition DVDs that come with special features (deleted scenes, bloopers, interviews with the cast, etc.), so they came out with "special edition" games as well.

They were definately nessesairy because after the release of r/b, g/s, r/s and d/p, they found out what they needed to fix or add or maybe deadd to make the game better than its predesesors.

    ok, I've rethought something...

emmerald has a few animations, a cutscene, and a uber battle frontier (impossible and sometimes repetetive, but needed testing grounds). I'll give emmerald that due.

crystal... anyone remember something really special apart from the cool cartridge? oh yea, animation. Though one thing, seems a like a cool addition for the time. but no new areas...

yellow I forgot. sorry, I actually thought it came first O.o
apart from a pikachu that followed you... I don't think there was much else. wasnt there a green out there too? lol...
ps: as for the gba remakes, I think we might have needed a remake. but later, as part of HH and SS. (also, running inside was genius)

platinum I think might be excusable too, I lost my charger so I havnt played in 4 months, but I am sure that something in it was alright... reminder people?

so sorry for re-sell lovers, I can see why they are ok. But I stand by the fact that earlier releases would have been better. I had given up when they finally gave out R/S.

except for every single game that extra has another concept not introduced in other games, crystal introduced moving sprites, emerald introduced the battle frontier, yellow introduced walking sprites ( also its was a fan demand), platinum was for to test items that transform pokemon ,shaymin, rotom, giratina ( because of the success of arceus and its plates)
so yeah those games aren't useless money makers. -.- and you don't have to buy the remakes gosh in fact if you think the game is repetitive don't buy it. as for me i didn't buy pearl and diamond i was in france on a foreign exchange trip and missed my opportunity

I agree, I love the cartridge!

Also, Crystal gave the choice of a female character much sooner, so that's a bonus. I remember getting tired of being a boy all the time. I just think these add on versions of the games give Nintendo a chance to refine their work. I don't mind paying for these games as I love Pokemon. A chance to replay the games without deleting my other save files is awesome. :]

Yes, Emerald added a post game and numerous features to the Ruby/Sapphire versions, which were otherwise devoid of anything other then the battle tower. Crystal added the Battle tower and animations, and Platinum added poke formes that transformed the otherwise weak Shaymin and Rotom into capable Pokémon for the OU/Uber Metagame.

Play Sapphire, then play Emerald. Notice the big difference?

Also, Nintendo is a business whose goal is to make money. Apparently thrid-versions sell very well. They try and fix what was wrong with originals and also add some slight extras to make it like a "new and improved" version of the originals before they get an actual remake. Think of it as a pseudo-remake before the actual remake two generations later.

So, let me tell you a little story about Pokemon.

    ****************
    *SPOILERS AHEAD*
    ****************

It all started in Japan, with a Pokemon Red and a Green version.

It sold well so they made Pokemon Blue version and updated the art, and the layout of the unknown dungeon.

The Red and Blue versions that we got was the Blue version remake.

These did well out here, so they made the game again a third time, baseing it closer to the show: Giving you a Pikachu as a starter, letting it follow you, improving the art style, changing the gymleaders pokemon, changing the layout of the unknown dungeon once again, and tweaking the overall difficulty. Not to mention allowing you to have all three starters.

The sucess of these four games led to Gold and Silver games. They did well, and so, like Blue and Yellow before it, they Made Crystal.

This gave the Pokemon moving sprites, the player a choice of gender, an added challenge for the Risingbadge in the dragon's den, and the chance to catch Suicune that wasn't roaming.

The sucess of those three games gave birth to Ruby and Sapphire versions. And, just like the Gold and Silver before it, Emerald was born.

Once again Pokemon's sprites moved, and people were calling you. You could (finally) re fight gymleaders, the games difficulty was tweaked, you had to fight both Team Aqua and Team Magma, Scott helped you get to the battle Frontier, and Steven aided you in a double battle. Not to mantion if two trainers spotted you at the same time, you had to fight them both. Finally Steven was replaced by Wallace, who used to be the Sootopilis gymleader, with Juan taking his place.

Diamond and Pearl were pretty awesome, and they must have done pretty well, as we got Platinum.

Platinum remodled a few of the gyms, as well as tweaking the difficulty, adding another Battle Frontier, and giving a few Pokemon some new forms. Speaking of, how about that Distortion World, I thought that was pretty awesome.

In all cases I have found the remakes to be something to look forward to, as they haven't let me down yet. Obviously I haven't played the original green, but if you have ever played the original Red and Blue, you were playing a remake (even if you didn't relise it).

Not completely useless, especially when you take in the fact that most people prefer the resell rather than one of the originals because they tend to combine them both.

Yellow: Added a walking sprite (later used again in HGSS), the ability to have all starters, updated the difficulty, along with gym leaders and trainers, also fixed the problem in RB that didn't allowed Charizard to use Fly.

Crystal: Female character, moving sprites, Battle Tower, additional plotline, Odd Egg, more in the Ruins of Alph

Emerald: Battle Frontier, moving sprites (which would become dominant from this point), walk-in double battles (<3), definitely updated the difficulty that RS was lacking

Platinum: New Battle Frontier, new sprites, difficulty was tremendously updated imo (I actually had a hard time with this game first time through because I was expecting DP levels), Distortion World, allowed both previous version mascots to be caught, introduced new forms and a few new attacks, updated Surfing speed

I'm probably skipping out on a few features, but as each generation has gone by, the resell seems to add more and more. I personally think of all these games, with the exception of Yellow, as my favorite games of their generation just because they're more challenging and more pleasing to look at than their predecessors. And when I decide to restart a game, I tend to go with the resell because I feel that if I play the first one, I'm missing out on a chunk of the game. So no, not a flop, and I don't think it's a big money scam. I think the resells really do fix up the problems with the two that came before.

You read my toughts! I prefer the "third" game over the first two they have just more thing to do. In the remakesthere is no third game just because they have the "updates" already in(look at HG/SS and crystal).

    Also:
Emerald:major plot change, you weren't forced to caugh the legendary pokemon.
    Platinum: remade graphic and texture.

    updated Surfing speed
Oh yes. This is important. Diamond and Pearl make me want to kill myself because of the slow surfing speed.

But yeah, I think that all the remakes are better than the originals. And like someone said, its just testing ground for the newer games. They submit their product to us, and we test it, showing them by sales if we like the new things they put in.

ok, i get the point, updating first post.
ALSO, putting a new question up... just let me edit a minute...

Yes, these remakes were necessary, but a waste of money.

    Benefits

The Pokemon company will put new ideas in effect to give you an idea of the next game
The Pokemon games are easier to play, due to new features and quicker gameplay

    Side-Effects

If you have a game with the same reigion, you may want to buy this game, and you feel jealous.

    BUT
what if you could DOWNLOAD it instead right onto the game in which you already invested heavily in? we are in a internet age! If there are wifi mystery gifts, give me some downloadable updates!

Why would I download it? I know this isn't the best time to be spending money on games of all things when there's school, gas, food, and other necessities to be bought, but if everyone downloaded these games, we wouldn't know Nintendo anymore. They'd be out of business. I prefer to have legal copies of my games. It's money wasted for Nintendo. Point is, if we all did this, Nintendo wouldn't make enough money to even have anything in the future for us to download.

And handheld games are meant to be in the palm of your hand. I want to take my games with me when I'm on trips, because I obviously can't have a Wii in the car. I've never seen anyone play SNES while waiting on food at a crowded restaurant either. I might just be ranting on the portability of the games, but that's just it. If they're downloaded onto a computer, where's your entertainment when you're not in front of the screen?

by download i mean like a mystery gift, FROM NINTENDO. Straight onto your DS. they can charge for bigger things like a new cave (and legendaries?), but having updates like faster surfing fix is veery helpful as a free download, and they can advertise for payable downloads every fix.

I dont know how you thought i meant some hack thing xD i mean nintendo rolls out downloadable content

Only about Crystal, but I never played Crystal so I don't know much.

Emerald and Platinum were excellent games.

Did you even play Crystal before writing this obscene comment?
