Water-drinking radio show contest turns deadly

    A radio show run by KDND "The End" 107.9FM in Sacramento ran a contest in which contestants drank HUGE amounts of water without going to the bathroom to win a Nintendo Wii. Apparently, a 28 year old woman contestant died from this. Needless to say, this radio show has been suspended.

    Anyway, I'll have to say this would be the fault of both DJ's for hosting such contest and the participants, for obvious reasons... I really wouldn't do something alike to get just a Wii.

    It's a news story, it belongs here.

    I read this story on IGN. It's such a sad story in that she died just trying to win a Wii for her three children. No doubt the tabloids are gonna want to jump all over the station for such a "dangerous" competition, but in all honesty, it was an innocent game, which I would've willingly participated in, because surely common sense would've told you when it was time for you to stop.
     
    ...boycott wii for a week? I don't think so. It's kinda ironic though, dying for your own kids for a stupid wii... Geez...her brain cells exploded...

    I heard this on the news and all, and why would the lady want to drink herself to death just to win a Nintendo Wii anyway? That's how desperate some people can be...I too feel sory for her children, but I think that the Wii won't be in their minds anymore... :\
     
    They just fired ten of the staff who presided over it, from what I heard.

    Apparently these people need to do both demographic and health research before they embark on something like this. Water intoxication causes the brain to swell and give out.

    She probably did not intend to die when she joined the contest and likely did not realize the danger of the event.

    Still, I suppose each person dies in his or her own manner, some more unusually than others. A curious and somewhat depressing affair . . .
     
    Yeah, I heard this on the radio countless times. I still think both parties (being the hosts and the woman) were brainless here. Besides, it wasnt how much water she drank that killed her, it was how fast she drank it. It was like 2 or 3 gallons in an hour!

    You couldve easily won that contest if youd drunk that water over a longer period of time, and as an added bonus, you'd have LIVED for Pete's sake!
     
    The sad thing is they are trying to sue the radio station which is pretty much impossible because she signed a wavier and all this crap. So pretty it was her own stupid fault, if she had any common sence she would have stopped. God there are some dumb people out there.
     
    Agreed...every party involved seems to be totally idiotic...The station especially for running the contest without checking the necessary safety procedures. However, I will show some sympathy for the woman who, in the heat of the competition, refused to use the bathroom when all her biological systems were yelling at her to do so...she refused becasue that was the point of the contest. I'm fairly certain the woman managed to sign a waiver...but I'm pretty sure the morning hosts never once told those guys that they can very well die from the contest.

    If there is blame to be placed, it has to go to the radio station hosts for irresponsibly holding a contest without medical experts standing by.
     
    I heard about this a few days ago, and I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.

    I mean, of course I feel bad for her death, but...Should'nt you be able to tell when enough is enough?

    the release/waiver can be as specific as possible, however if there is negligence by an individual (or a group in this case), a court will look at the release, crumble it up, and throw it out the window. But more than likely, a radio station is not going to have adequate release forms. They are SOL

    And as far as having common sense, I think its a little unfair to make that statement. Believe it or not, not everyone is aware that you can die of water intoxication (the imbalance of electrolytes) its just something you don't really think about, until of course in this matter something extreme takes place.

    of course the station will likely pay to avoid bad publicity, but nothing can compensate for a persons life.

    I completely agree... Everyone knows that she didn't enter that contest to kill herself; she was doing it for her kids, and obviously didn't know how dangerous the situation would end up being. I think that the radio station staff are more to blame than anyone for being so irresponsible, but it was still a pretty innocent mistake that no one saw coming. I guess that a lesson has been learned now, though.

    I just feel really sorry for her kids... ._.;
     
    Nevertheless, the station's staff that held the contest still should have done research before hosting such a contest as innocent as the subject seemed to be. The fact that the woman died makes the misjudgement not faultless. Of course it is a situation that many people ignored, including me; but I still think it's merely a matter of common sense. After all, anything in excess is bad. >>;
     
    its like they say, what you don't know can hurt you. and in this case she had no idea (at least it appears to be) what potentially could've have happened to her. I don't know if I would call it lack of common sense, but more lack of knowledge and it certainly didn't help that the radio hosts pretty much rejected the idea that this could be harmful after a nurse called in the radio station warning them about it.
     
    OMG, how stupid was that, don't tell me it is a innocent game, why someone can put itself in such danger of pull his/her own body to the limit?, you should know you are like a bag, and you will just pop your own body after that much effort.

    The radio station obviously had no freaking idea, such ignorant people should not make a contest like this without medical advice.

    All for a stupid Wii, wich is not that expensive, what a bunch of morons.
