So you look at your computer/laptop and you see you've only got 2 gb free of something and you want to free up space. well you'll probably find you got old file over your computer delete them.

or if you've got your own way and you want to share your way post it on here and learn from ofters or your self.

Control panel > programs and features > uninstall any programs you don't need/want anymore. If you have a lot of video games, uninstalling them can free up a lot of space. Also go to the properties of your HDDs and click on the disk cleanup button to clear any temporary files you don't need anymore. If you still need space, find some of the folders taking up a lot of memory, videos, music and other files in the 'my documents' folder can eat up a lot of memory, so check those ones and clear out anything you don't need anymore. I make a habit of uninstalling video games once I've completed them and deleting videos once I've watched them, so I never even come close to running out of memory.

So here's my checklist if that ever happens. I say if simply because I usually end up never getting past step 1)

    • Step 1: Delete apps, files, data that I don't access frequently or that I don't foresee the need for anymore.
    • Step 2: take inventory of External enclosures, If available proceed to step 3
    • Step 3: Buy larger hard drive and/or external RAID array enclosure with the fastest transfer interface available for hardware. If simply buying hard drive Proceed to step 4, If adding external RAID array then proceed to step 5.
[*]Step 4: Clone drives (except in instances of system only drive, in which case fresh re-install)
[*]Step 5: Set Up RAID array and begin designation of files/folders.
[*] Step 6: Get on with life.

    End of procedure.
I went through this procedure about 2 years ago and haven't had to upgrade since. I was right to assume that 3TB would be sufficient for 3+ years of use. Here's hoping that I don't need to update and add on another few TB until at least 2012.

Delete what you don't need and shove the stuff that you do need but aren't using to an external backup drive in the interim. That's what I do.

I have never had to free up space, seeing as I have a relatively large HDD and there's a lot of free space in it. Back when I had Windows XP SP2, I had an HDD of 50GB or such, so I had to remove anything, from random music I downloaded , to rarely used programs to keep the little space I had. Or you can always use external devices (USB, hard drive..) to transfer anything you want there.

I use an old, freeware version of SpaceMonger (download here) to give me an idea of what's taking up the most space.

I'd be inclined to get a bigger HDD then, lol. If not, there's an awesome program called SpaceMonger that gives a visual map of the space taken up by things on a drive. The old version is free and well worth downloading.

Folks, I think you know what to use now. :D

There's a double-bite to using a laptop as your main machine: not only is it difficult to upgrade when it fills, but you have the hibernation file, which can be huge, providing you have a lot of RAM.

if your somebody who downloads episodes of something, then......... well, if you like it so much, you ought to buy some DVDs *shot*

Just put 'em on a disk or flashdrive or something. Of course, you'll have to have a way to lable a Disk... (and you can lable it on the computer too)
