FireRed hack: Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)

Hi, I'm dropping by to say that I absolutely adored this hack
i did a full playthrough completing the entire pokedex, and i already plan to do another one once the balance update drops

that being said, i saw you were gonna do some changes with mon distribution. and i had a suggestion
how about adding something like the habitat list in pokemon blazing emerald? its basically like the dexnav but only shows you what pokemon are in a route. I think it would be a really useful fix for trying to figure out what pokemon are in a specific area
of course you could also just add the dexnav itself, but i had a feeling it wouldnt fit for this game, given its more casual difficulty

one more thing, could you please add the mechanic of flame body working outside of battle to make eggs hatch faster? since theres some pokemon that can only be obtained through breeding, and some of those eggs take a LONG time to hatch, not counting the two legendary eggs

aside from that, i love this hack. and i cant wait to see what the future'll be like for it!
Thank you! I'm still working in binary so I'll have to look into things like a habitat list or dexnav but if they're within my ability to implement I would love to, it's a fun idea. As for Flame Body, I believe there are scripts for inserting later gen ability mechanics floating around so that should be doable, but if I for some reason can't do it I can always halve egg hatching times to compensate.

So a friend of mine wants to do a full living dex completion, but has come to realize that doing so would be impossible due to the special case of certain legendaries. If possible, would you be able to update so that they can respawn in the future? Like say, after beating the E4 again?
Haha I'm happy to hear someone is interested in living dexing the hack! However, IIRC there might be an issue with available box space (aka not enough boxes for all the mons). I'll look into making legendaries respawn after an E4 win, and maybe adding box space while I'm at it. I'm not sure if the latter is something binary can do but it's worth a shot 😅

Is Bruxish supposed to have only 1 hp like Shedninja? because it lacks Wonder guard and thats the only thing that makes having 1 hp work, I'm unsure if its a joke or a oversight.

Also i got Gorochu and i really enjoy that it looks like an exploding carebear, the fiery passion motif is cool.
Ah, I believe Bruxish is in the slot that Shedinja used to occupy so this appears to be more hardcoding shenanigans. I should hopefully be able to find a way to remove this. I'll release a fix patch when I do. Thank you!

And thank you haha, exploding carebear is the most perfect description ever xD

EDIT: Fixed now!

im loving the game so far, do you have like a comprehensive guide or discord so we can discuss the game yet. Im doing a play 100% play through so I can have the Pokédex information so I can have a normal play through but still it's a 10/10 rom hack and im loving every second.

Please make an opossum please I'll do anything
Thank you ^^ No comprehensive guide or discord atm, once I'm done with the balance update I really should make the former tho hah.

I will make it my mission to make an opossum!

oh, one more thing
would it be possible to add the nature stat indicators? like with one stat being red and the other blue in the summary screen
as someone who can only remember what like 4 of the natures alter, that would help a bunch

Been playing this hack and it has been really fun
Unfortunately I ran into a softlock that made me lose a good amount of progress
In Pokémon Tower, where you can encounter ghosts without getting the silph scope first, why DID YOU GIVE ONE OF THEM SHADOW TAG AS AN ABILITY? This Softlock like I said, reset me to before even rock tunnel making me lose about an hour of progress, this hack is fun but WHY?
Apologies for the rage, but in a future update could you make it so that the ghosts in the pokemon tower cannot have shadow tag for their ability, or restrict them to the floors above the boss ghost, it would prevent this softlock from happening to others.

Found some oversights/bugs, Trampoline has bulk ups description when on the tm screen.

Kecneon is sound type, despite everything pointing to light type, Kecleon is also sound, not certain about that one being an oversight, but i figured I'd point it out just in case they're meant to share a type.

Pokemon mansions new lore was implemented in such a cool way, i love how almost every dex entry on the pokrmon in there reveals just a bit more of the story

Also, I found a shinyCharmeleon missingno in the secret room on my first encounter is it scripted or am i just lucky?

I'll see if I can find a script for this, I'd imagine yes since it's a fairly common modern mechanic. I'll do my best to add it to the balance update patch at the latest!

Oh oof, what an oversight! Sorry about that. I'll push a fix to this ASAP 😰

Thank you! Looks like many move descriptions have shifted for whatever binary hacking nonsense reason.

Also, you're completely right about the Kecleon line, I have no idea how it evaded me for so long that I had mistyped them! And no, no scripted shinies in the game so that was pure luck :D

I'll do my best to push a patch tonight that fixes the move description, wrong type and that potential softlock mentioned above. Thanks everyone for bringing these to my attention!

EDIT: Patch is out!

would anyone happen to know how each pokemon evolve???
There's a PDF file included with the patch you can download at the top post that has all Pokémon locations, evolution methods as well as locations for obtaining evolution items listed!

SPEAKING OF, turns out said documentation still had a pretty big error in regards to two new static legendaries (a peek behind to the curtain to how you got them in early stages of the hack's development, hah). I updated the 1.92 zip file with the corrected document already, but will make a note of it when I next push either a fix patch or the balance patch.

1.93 is now out. Pretty minor changes this time around, just corrected some breeding issues that were pointed out to me (remnants from an old design hah), and reduced all hatching times while I was at it. I also renamed the documentation file for clarity, since agree that the name was pretty misleading now that I think about it 😅

Nothing gamebreaking was found this time around, so an update from 1.92 is not super necessary unless you plan on hatching some eggs or could use a free Shiny/Chaos Stone.

[PokeCommunity.com] Weird Type Fun v1.93 (complete type swap hack)

OVERVIEW

Weird Type Fun is a simple rom hack with an even simpler concept: to have even series veterans be confused about type matchups. With 18 all new types and a completely reimagined pokédex to match, WTF makes the ever familiar Kanto a little bit less so.

While WTF sticks mostly to the core FireRed story and structure, some characters and lore has been changed around to keep things fresh. Event only areas (aka Navel Rock and Birth Island) have been made accessible through gameplay and a couple of new locations and small events have been added in.

FEATURES

  • All types have been replaced with new alternatives. Type matchups do not mirror original.
  • 400-ish pokémon, assembled from up to gen 9 (thus including Hisui and Paldea). Also includes a couple of beta pokémon and fakemon.
  • Each pokémon has been redesigned to fit its new type (think Fool's Gold, except more nonsensical)
  • Moves and items updated to match the new types
  • Mostly faithful Gen III Kanto experience with some new twists

KNOWN ISSUES

This is very much a first rom hack situation. A funny sprite project got out of hand and I learned rom hacking on the go.

There is the occasional oddity/issue with the hack I have yet to figure out how to fix (some of them directly caused by my blunders early on in the project, haha). Nothing game-breaking as far as testing has revealed, but I will list what I know here for reference.

Thanks for your interest in my silly little rom hack! It was small and broken in the beginning, but with the help of this awesome community it's growing into its own!
Been having a blast with this just a quick question: in the docs it says goldlox evolves into thunderous or meloetta based on its personality (assuming like the wurmple line) at level 50 but i cant seem to get these evos. I noticed one of its evolutions had the wrong level in the docs so leveled it to 100 to see and it still didn't evolve. Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding something?

Love the hack, the designs are really cute. Hope it gets a discord for better discussion but I know it's a lot of commitment

Been doing a nuzlocke through the second gym, been surprisingly fair even with a new type chart. Leveling anything other than your starter is rough though, with low wild levels and no good way to catch up new guys. If the hack needs one thing I'd say it's fast grinding

Ah sorry, this is a mistake in the documentation that refers back to a very old version of the game (so old it was never even released publicly hah). In fact, it's an error I corrected as late as yesterday. Sorry about that! If you download the current version zip file from the top post and refer to the "PokédexGuide" documentation in the zip file (which is the exact same file, just renamed for clarity) it will actually have the correct way to get those two. Sorry again!

Thank you! The current version actually has repeatable grinding battles against a nurse in the second floor of every Pokémon Center. She has high exp pokémon that scale by specific badges and championship, no attacking moves and always gives 5 Rare Candies upon victory. It's a pretty recent addition and I only added one mention of it in the rom itself as of yet, I'm hoping to signal it better in the big balance update I'm working on (aka 2.0). Hope that helps!

No worries I'll get it now thanks so much 😁

No worries I'll get it now thanks so much 😁 one more questions when you get the chance which rod gets tatsugiri in the Safari zone? I've tried all 3 and have been at it for around 4ish hrs 😅 took a while to find froakie but since he was the rare encounter on the super rod does that mean tatsu is good rod? Sorry just wanting to complete the Dex so I can see all the sprites and and read the entries 😅

Or is it supposed to be the vanillite? Cause I found one of those but it doesn't say it's found there in the docs?

Been playing the game lately at my own pace, and I'm having lots of fun. One question tho. I want to get myself a Gourmeon, but I can't find the Whipped Cream anywhere. Where can I get it?

Ok so I have no idea if it's me just being dumb or a bug but for some reason I absolutely CANNOT evolve Bayleef? Like the animation will start then after a second it stops and does "...?" as if I pressed to cancel it. At first I thought maybe it was just me hitting the B button on accident but even when I did it with my hands fully off the buttons it still stopped. Am I just missing something or is it something else?

Looks like the documentation is still funky. Sorry about that, I'll look into it! According to rom data, Vanillite should indeed not be there so I'm very confused as to what is going on. Either way, Tatsugiri is a 1% with Super Rod (replacing the original Dratini encounter). It is much easier to find in the post-game at Navel Rock. I wouldn't mind bumping up the Safari Zone encounter rate a little bit, though.

This sounds like the hardcoding FRLG has with banning "national dex" evolutions before you obtain the national dex itself. However, in WTF you get that from the start, so that is very strange.

I ran some tests on the most recent patch, and the only way I was able to replicate this was on a fresh file before returning Oak's Parcel and thus getting the pokédex at all (which is quite easy by utilising the Pokémon Center nurse fights, as she is available from the get-go). After playing to the point of getting the pokédex and first pokéballs, Bayleef evolved normally in my tests.

If you do already have the pokédex already, all I can think of is checking that you used a 1.0 rom while applying the patch, other than that I'm currently drawing a blank. However! HexManiac comes with a script to disable this silly evolution block entirely (it just didn't occur to me I would need it, since the nat dex is given at the start and I never ran into this issue during testing), so I will see if it plays nice with my hack (sometimes the choices I made near the beginning of the project have caused issues in this kind of regard 😓). If there are no problems, I'll release a patch with it applied as a failsafe. Sorry about this and I hope I can solve this one way or another ASAP!

OHHHH that was my problem then, I was trying to evolve it before getting the dex cause I wanted to see which final evo I liked most. So it was just me missing something! Once I grabbed it, it evolved just fine. Probably should have done it in the first place lol. Thank you though!!

I have a question regarding some encounters in Mt. Sylph: Are Spinarak/Ariados, Cherubi/Cherrim, and Shuckle actually available in this area? I've been running around and smashing rocks left and right with no luck. Just want to make sure I'm looking in the right place for these Pokemon.

That aside, I love your hack! It's a lot of fun to play and the spritework is gorgeous. You and your team have done such a fantastic job! It's easily up there as one of my favorite romhacks and I can absolutely see myself replaying this over and again for a long time. Much love to you and your team and I wish you the best with your future endeavors.
