What are efficient sets to start collecting? (Cards)

Hello all. I am new to this forum so please bear with me. I recently started collection Pokémon evolutions and bought my first Pokémon evolutions booster box, which I am totally excited to get! I started collecting original base set, fossil, jungle and team rocket cards years back.

I was looking at Pokeelector's website and saw a ton of different sets you can collect and didn't know where to begin. I am interested in trying different series but I wasn't sure if there were a few go-to sets that people generally go for or try to achieve (if selling).

I am not looking to play(use) the cards but more for collection purposes to finding what are worth the most and very rare cards to find.

From what I saw on the internet..Base set, team rocket, Leaf green/ Fire red, and a pearl were listed as their favorites, but I wasn't sure what the rest might think.

I LOVED base set, jungle, fossil and Team rocket if that helps at all.

Is there any sets you would recommend?

I was always a fan of the Wizards of the Coast sets myself, though I know it's getting harder (and pricier) to come across any of the older sets like that. I also enjoyed a number of the Black & White sets (Dark Explorers, Dragons Exalted, Plasma Freeze, Legendary Treasures), as well as the EX Delta Species set because of the new Pokemon typings.

It really all comes down to preference though, and if you're collecting for a particular reason (looking for certain Pokemon, easiest set to complete, etc.). And just a heads up, but we've got an entire section dedicated to the TCG, so I'm going to move this thread over there for you!

    MOVED.

Thanks buddy, I will definitely look into those. Also, thanks for moving my thread.

I liked Base set, Fossil, Jungle and Team Rocket.

I also would like to collect anything close to those, remade or not. Some pokedexs I loved playing the Nintendo games were original, Emerald, Heart gold, and loved emerald.

I know there are a lot of different series of those but I wasn't sure if there was a more popular one.

Any sets/series close to the aforementioned ones above?

    I do appreciate any feedback.

Close is an ugly word. If you mean close in set order, you're looking at the Gym Challenge sets or the gen 2 (e-card series) stuff.

However, if you are looking for something more common that is similar in design and content to those sets, I'd advise XY-Evolutions (XY12). It is the most recent set, so it is the most common to see in stores. It isn't great competitively like SS or ROS, so the singles are mostly quite low in cost. It also was designed to look and feel a LOT like the OG Base Set. If you want to know what you're getting into, read my review of the best cards in the set on the PokeCommunity Daily (click that blue text).

SS is an abbreviation competitive players like to use when referring to the Steam Siege set. ROS is an abbreviation competitive players like to user when referring to the Roaring Skies set.

I;ve always called it STS haha.

In response to the original question, if you are trying to complete a set that, in theory, would be quick to complete, try Ancient Origins. It's smaller than most sets and has some fairly valuable cards in it.

Ok thanks. I am somewhat liking steam siege..

I did recently receive a booster box for Evolutions and my 6th pack was a Charizard original. First charizard I have ever gotten, so happy!

Evolutions and steam siege seem to be newer sets that I like. Thanks again

nightmarch deck is always strong and works well against almost any deck, also easy to get the cards, just kind of annoying to play

Really it depends on what Pokémon you like, also if the set is easy to find in stores.

Right now some of the most expensive cards are in the following sets

    Plasma Freeze: 122/116 Ultra Ball
Flashfire: 108/106 Charizard Ex and 107/106 Charizard Ex, 104/106 Lysandre
    Plasma Storm: 136/135 Charizard
Roaring Skies: 106/108 Shaymin Ex, 77/108 Shaymin Ex, 110/108 VS Seeker

None of these sets are easy to come by aside from Roaring Skies which comes in the Hoenn starter tins, or maybe the Black and White sets, which were rereleased recently in 3 pack blisters.

Breakthrough is the only set where you can pull a Break card and an EX in the same pack. But it lacks in Pokémon as exs, most of the exs in the set are Mewtwo.

Most sets made before Breakthrough are hard to find in stores, and most booster boxes of sets from before Primal Clash are really expensive. You could buy single cards, quite a few sets don't have any expensive cards in them. So they are easy to buy singles of. Personally I prefer pulling ultra rares, I only buy cards when I'm missing 1 or 2 cards.
