what if contests were the main focus of the main games

Well...it'd depend. Would they still be as rubbish as they were in Gen III and IV, or would they have improved them in any way? As this is Game Freak I'm willing to bet that they wouldn't have, so the chances are that if they'd made contests the main focus of the games I would have stopped playing them a very long time ago. Minigames in Pokemon are always very badly designed and I never bother with them, and whilst a focus on them would suggest greater depth and consideration would go into them, considering how little the series has changed over the years, I find it difficult to believe they'd have changed much from Gen III's.

...which is depressing, because if Contests were done the same way that they're done in the anime I'd probably love them.

It would definitely be interesting, considering they would put the time and effort of the gyms into contests instead, maybe they'd be properly developed like the anime? I'd probably really enjoy them if so, I always loved watching them in the anime, especially with Drew and May's rivarly etc! That being said though, they probably wouldn't be as good, I liked playing for Gen III's contests for something to do, on and off and for nostalgia but for a whole game, not unless they improved them :)

Oh wow this is interesting.

I'm not entirely sure how it would work. I think you would still have to battle to catch the Pokemon, but training wouldn't be the main focus anymore. I think it could make an excellent spin-off, but as a main game I'm not sure I would enjoy such a drastic change.

Contests were something I would enter occasionally, but never something I changed my moves for or made a main focus. I just entered not caring about the result, then moved on with the story.

i've personally enjoyed almost every mini-game esque implementation in pokemon (pokemon stadium minigames, gen 3 contests, pokethlon), so assuming they're done right (and this is a rather big assumption to make), i don't see why this couldn't be fun.

to be honest? i really do miss mini-games in pokemon. gen 3 contests were the peak for me until gen 4 underground and pokeathlon and i feel like not as much focus has been given to minigames ever since. i suppose USUM's mantine surfing minigames sort of counts, but that novelty unfortunately wore off as people grew tired of gen 7 games as a whole.

really though, pokemon doesn't need to be about battling all the time! i think there's space for really well implemented minigames for the sake of relaxation and it's been done well in the past for the most part, no reason why it can't be done again. i say this but i haven't touched contests in particular ever since gen 3 (because that's the last time contests were fun for me), but idk, contests back then were more.... easier for me to understand, i suppose.
