What starter did you pick first in each gen?

Kanto: Charmander
Johto: Chikorita
Hoenn: Treecko
Sinnoh: Piplup
Unova: Snivy
Kalos: Froakie
Alola: Rowlet
Galar: Scorbunny (haven't played yet, but I have always wanted to pick Scorbunny since the first trailer)
Paldea: Sprigatito (haven't played yet, but this is who I would pick)

2 Fire, 2 Water, 5 Grass. Water is my favorite type, but oddly enough I gravitate towards the Grass starters apparently.

I've always gone with the water-type starters for the simple reason that blue was always my favorite color, but I did make a few exceptions:

Johto: I love all 3 so much that I can't actually remember which one I used in Gold
Unova: Snivy (wasn't sold on Oshawatt at first, but love Snivy's sass)
Paldea: Sprigatito (I can't resist cats)

Every other gen was water (although I guess Pikachu was technically my first Kanto starter in Yellow). I like to play through each gen at least 3 times regardless to experience each starter. Still trying to motivate myself to use Quaxley in Paldea—he's so cute, but I can't take his middle or final evolutions seriously 😭

Kanto - Squritle
Johto - Chikorita
Hoenn - Mudkip
Sinnoh - Piplup
Unova - Snivy
Kalos - Chespin
Alola - Rowlet
Galar - Grooky
Hisui - Oshawatt
Paldea - Fueccoco.

But honestly once I got past Unova I didn't really care for the starters and they never stayed on my team.

Are the newer generations really that bad? I've only played up to V, so I'm mostly unfamiliar.

It's not that they were bad. I just personally didn't care for them. In kalos everyone loved the Froakie line, and in alola everyone went after Litten. When I did my playthroughs I went with pokémon that I liked not necessarily going for who's strong or perfect coverage. Just pokémon I thought were neat.

That's fair, I like to mix up my team for gyms every now and then, unlike when I was 5-6 years old and overleveled my starter. I think alot of children made that mistake, though.
