I'm not really a competitive battler...
My in-game team would be:

Typhlosion
Pidgeot
Marshtomp
Ampharos
Leafeon
Alakazam

All of the will be able to get super effective hits on their weaknesses.
I'll think of a team to use against my friends later...
 
im transfering some sinnoh eggs from my pearl to soulsilver early in the game

1. feraligatr
2. staraptor
3. luxray

For HeartGold I will have something along the lines of:
Typhlosion
Pidgeot
Ampharos
Lapras
Something with a good ground type move, maybe Phanphy if I can get it, or Quagsire if I can't
Parasect maybe, for HMs and False Swipe + Spore

I will have a different starter for SoulSilver, probably Totodile. I'll try and train a different team (not like D/P, where my teams were exactly the same).
 
Well, I've already started the game, and I already have a team. It's not ready for heavy battling, and I'm probably going to upgrade it later, but oh, well. :[

I dislike planning a team in advance. Everything is done at what feels right at the time.

As for explanation of nicknames:
Meganium: Full name should be Santana "Chiko" Rodriguez. Sporting a fancy mustache, if HGSS allowed sprite customization.
Ninetales: Sounded right as a Vulpix. Now it doesn't, but it sure as heck stuck on.
Ampharos: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick.
Togekiss: Because he's spiky. Also was watching a compilation DVD of videos by Spike Jonez at the time of naming.
Gyarados: The MVP of CoD4.
Dragonair: I always have one Pokemon with a Hiragana nickname in my team.
