Well, yes, I admit that really DOESN'T make as much sense as it could, but all right yeah, sensitive topic, oh well. :P

I am still firmly rooted in believing it's the New York area, then again I haven't really read most of this thread and therefore haven't really heard any of the evidence for it being anywhere else based on "it doesn't HAVE to be new york"

...then I'll keep going with the NYC side.

Isshu isn't based off of New York City. It's based off of the shape of the 3 landmasses that comprise the focus of NYC's metropolitan area. Hiun City and nearby Liberty Island are direct references to the NYC and it's statue of liberty, and sure, Hiun City is most likely based off of the harbor area at the front of Manhattan Island, but the rest of the region is just as imaginative in its sources, restoring most of the rest of the area to its natural state, even adding steep mountains at the sides for interest.

For those who want to go about debating the accuracy of Isshu and how the mountains don't fit in, Kyoto, Japan, which Ecruteak City is based on, is far closer to Lake Biwa, which is what the Lake of Rage is based on, than the games suggest. I'd like to think they'd be able to have a creative license with this sorta stuff. After all, it's a shape they really borrowed. I don't think it's just American influences they've borrowed for the region, but modern, western culture which has been more of an influence in these new games.

Well there are several others places with the same shape though...

Exactly, nothing has to be down to the very letter. Pikachu is supposed to be based off of the Pika, when in fact it looks nothing like it. I feel like Game Freak has and will continue to take things and then add their own twist to it.

There needs to be one that's based on New Zealand!

Maybe a Pokemon that shapes like a Kiwibird

I'm gonna go with incognito and say that it's NYC, but of course they took some creative license.

@above: you might want to link that from tinypic or something, since it's not showing up.

Neither NYC or Shanghai has an island shaped like a pokeball.

Look what I found.
Spoiler:

Wow, that is pretty convincing... Now I'm definitely unsure. But, I still think it's NYC. Although I don't see why it can't be NYC with that location based on what you showed. So, is it now up to a ferris wheel and the statue of liberty?

EDIT: I thought about it. The southern part of Isshu seems more NYC with hiun looking like new york harbor, and liberty island. And the northern part seems more like Shanghai, with the ferris wheel and all. Also, the shape of the land on either side of the middle peninsula looks more like shanghai. Don't very much like the idea, but I'm thinking it's a mix of both.

I'm going to agree with that. The middle island doesn't really look like Shanghai - reminds me of Manhatten. The side peninsulas look like Shanghai and I think that's about it.

IMO, Isshu is a mix of both.

Spoiler:
Nice one kirby. And it is located right below the lake like in isshu. So it might be shanghai after all, and not some made up place.

Now here is a real life size comparison between regions in japan, shanghai and NYC area
Now how can any1 say when looking at this map that NYC could be a region in a pokemon game(it is that little red dot in the lower map) While shanghai is just the right side, totally matches all the other regions.
Now there is a ration 500km/500mi on the maps so u cant say i edited the pictures or whtever, whilst nyc map on the right has a ratio 10km/5mi

I dont think NYC has any real chance of being isshu except victiny event, which might be a reference to japanese all popular v-sign, to attract kids, or they could use it only to reference america, but not base isshu of it.

You champion, Kirbychu. That is...incredibly amazing. .__.

Oh and the fact that shanghai area is closer to hoenn, is because hoenn itself is supposed to be farther then other regions, and since isshu has a luvdisc evo, it is just logical to place it at least nearby hoenn, but still keeping the fact that isshu is farther then other ragions and that u can only access it by air or water.
