Last "newest" game I've played was Diamond and I'm looking to get back into Pokémon. I know absolutely nothing about anything after the fourth gen, so which games should I start out with to get back into the series? Should I skip Black and White and go right for B/W 2?

Buying a 3DS next week when I get my next paycheck.

You can play BW/BW2, then buy OR/AS even X/Y, but ORAS have more interesting things than X/Y have to offer.

Isn't ORAS essentially an almost exact remake for R/S though?

Yes, ORAS is remake of Gen3 R/S and E

To be honest I'd go in the order the games normally go in. After you play gen 6 you may not like the gen 5 graphics as much or something. Also don't skip Black/White, it really sets the stage in a way for Black/White 2 by introducing you to characters like Bianca, Cheren, Ghetsis, N (aka people you don't know :P). Also since Black/White 2 is a few years after Black/White there are some gym leader changes and some references to the original game that you wouldn't know/understand if you skip out on Black/White.

Visuals are the biggest difference since ORAS is in "3D".

Dont skip B/W cos B2/W2 continues on the B/W.

Thanks for the suggestions guys :)

Another returning user? Well the people above me have already mentioned that BW and B2W2 are an ideal combo to go with, and XY are good if you're looking for a game with a lot of Pokémon to use. But on the same end, most people will suggest ORAS instead because they have a little more post-game and more features to them as a whole, but that's not to say XY has nothing going for it.

I think Black 2/White 2 are excellent games to jump back into the franchise with. They offer plenty of gameplay with a huge selection of Pokemon to choose from, many made available early-on. If you're looking to get into the sixth generation then preferably I'd start with X&Y considering they are the games that introduced Mega Evolution. They give you a much better understanding behind the whole concept of Mega Evolution, not to mention the awesome storyline that comes with it.

Since it's been a while since we had last played any fourth generation games, Virtual, I'd recommend us to start up again from this particular gen.

I'd personally go with Platinum, as it's got exclusives from both Diamond and Pearl combined into, and also access to features that its other two counterparts don't have; it really is a great title. Once we are done with this, it'd likely be a good idea to move onto Black and White, and eventually Black 2 and White 2 (I'm not such a huge fan of these two, unfortunately, but others might look at them differently).

Soon, we'll be reaching X and Y, as well as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire; before we even know it, we should be back on track!
