Why aren't many shops closed down...

Agreed. Tax the hell out of them. It'll help break peoples addictions and for those that are STILL willing to pay obscene money for cancer-in-a-box: it'll just help out our economy.

Win win win.

It won't make people stop smoking them, it will just make them poorer, cartons cost ~$75 in NY and people smoke them

Obviously it won't make everyone stop smoking, but it'll probably persuade quite a few people to at least cut back.
 
Which would people want to do:
Buy stuff for their family?
or
Smoke highly priced cigs. all day?
Many choose #2 so many dont care about their families
 
Have you seen a smoker after not having a fag for a few hours? They get agitated and angry. Do you want about half of the population like that all the time?

And these people are funding your schools and hospitals mate.
 
Making Cigarettes more expensive wont stop them because if they get addicted they Will buy it just like people do with other drugs for example,

Dealer-"Wants some Drugs?, $100 cash"
Person-"Ok!"...Next day...
Person-"I need more drugs gimme!"
Dealer-"Okay $500 cash!"
Person-"Okay fine Just give it!", and repeat.

making the taxes go up wouldn't help at all. and taking them away wouldn't help at all either
and besides its a drug
people could go and buy them from drug dealers any day of the week in my town : P lol
Also and this is really sick but:
every 2 seconds a person dies
every 1 second a person is born
they say there should be a war every 60-80 years to keep the world not over crowded
smokers kill themself so in a way its stops the world from getting over crowded (I really didn't want to say that)

someone will say 'how would like it to die in the war!?' and probably say stuff about this post but oh well its true >.>

cigarettes should have never been invented
 
Well they can't make them illegal. That is how the government makes their money. All those taxes from the tobacco. But I did notice some people I know who quit smoking because the high taxes of tobacco. It is their choice if they want to keep smoking. If they feel it is getting expensive they will quit. It can be done, but it is their call. The government could raise tax up again. But they will never legalized tobacco. I understand that it kills everyone, but there are other stuff that kills people a lot more. Like car accidents and heart disease.
 
If raising taxes on cigarettes stopped people from buying them, we would have already seen it. Instead, just as many people buy cigarettes, most of them already poor and now spending money they don't have, making them poorer. Not to mention you're putting people working for the tobacco industry out of jobs. It's a lose/lose situation. I'm personally for a public smoking ban, but raising taxes on cigarettes isn't going to help anyone.
 
Cigarettes are an easy target for taxation for politicians.
Most of the public would stronly oppose higher income or property taxes, or sales taxes, but taxes on vices like fags and alcohol are a lot of the time supported.

An average of 685 people die every day by drowning, in the entire world.

Swimming and boating should be illegal.

But seriously... Outlawing cigarettes is probably one of the worst things you could do in the world. :\
