Gareth - Prologue b
Part II
Part II
There was one last stop to make before leaving Pallet for what could be for good. The library. Gareth wasn't overly fond of it, since it was a really stiff and dusty place according to him. Even though he liked calm places, often, he didn't really like the library.
But he should get some knowledge from the books there... he would probably need it. Charm was rather nervous as they entered the old building. Gareth noticed that. "Oh.. you're afraid of burning something up with your tail, aren't you, girl?"
Charm nodded excusingly, but Gareth simply nodded and sent her into her pokésphere. "You'll be fine in here for a while. Take a rest," he said and entered the library.
It was big. And quiet. Although there were several people walking among the endless shelves or sitting at tables reading, they didn't make a single sound. Gareth thought it was rather eerie. The huge room was brown, since the shelves were rather dark and it was a long ways up to the roof, which was made of wood. Big windows let a tired daylight in, which fell silently on the reading people.
He went to the section that handled wild pokébeasts and how to avoid or handle them if you ran into them. Yes, there was a section about it. There, he thought he'd just stand and read a little... but he got hooked. After half an hour, he was sitting down on the floor, leaning against a bookshelf with several books scattered around him and one in his hands. It was about exotic pokémon. He had gotten stuck on a page that handled three rather peculiar pokémon. They looked like monkeys and were called Pansage, Panpour and Pansear.
As he sat there, immensed, someone almost tripped over him. "Oh! Excuse me!" a surprised woman's voice came.
Gareth looked up and saw a rather old and pretty cute and short lady. "Sorry," he mumbled and began getting up, looking rather embarrassed over spreading the books over the floor.
"Oh, no worries," the lady said, smiling. "I see you like reading?"
"Uh... I guess so," Gareth said, not really reading usually.
"Oh, that is one of my favorite books," she said, pointing at the page with the monkeys in his hands. "Aren't those pokébeasts spectacular?"
"Yes... they are," Gareth said. "Do you know if they can be found in Kanto?"
"Perhaps," the lady said mischievously. "If you look hard enough for them."
Gareth was a little annoyed by that. He wanted real answers. He looked down on the images. He didn't care much for Pansear since Charm was the only fire pokémon he'd probably need... but Panpour and Pansage were quite interesting.
"They are a trio, but they aren't living together," the lady continued. "Sure they can all be found deep inside forests, but they like different things. Some say they originate from the same species, long time ago. I think so too. I had a friend who had a Pansear once. It was a remarkably lively little creature!"
Gareth nodded. He could imagine. Then he started to pick up the books from the floor. The librarian helped him, and soon there was only one book left. "Ah, that one..." the lady said slowly, picking it up. "Have you read it?"
It was an almost golden colored book. On the front was an image of a feather.
"No, I didn't get to that one yet," Gareth said blankly. "What about it?"
"It tells the tales of the legendary birds... Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno." Her eyes seemed to drift off into the distance, maybe following a small corn of dust in the quiet air.
"Legendary birds... I know there are legendary pokébeasts, but what do they do?" Gareth asked.
"They do all kinds of things... or rather they used to do. Nowadays not many believe they exist." She broke up into a secretive smile. "But I know they do."
Gareth hated when people hinted things and didn't say them straight out. His face must have told the librarian so, for she continued:
"I once met Moltres. The legendary phoenix bird of fire. It was a dark night on the island of Cinnabar... it's located south of here. I was visiting a friend but her pokébeast had gone missing. It was so very dark when we went out to look for it, clouds were everywhere in the sky, hiding the moon from us. I almost got lost on the countryside of Cinnabar, near the volcano. It seemed pointless to keep looking, when I suddenly saw a light further up the mountain's side. I climbed and it got brighter. Soon, I spotted my friend's Nidoran. She was sitting on a cliff, alone I thought. But just as I reached that cliff, something huge got up behind it and flew past me. I felt a warm breeze, and the world got bright... I admit I got scared, not daring to look into the light. Nidoran came to me, and carrying it I hurried down the mountain again. But I looked back once, and saw it hovering above the cliff where we had been, lighting up the place. Moltres. I am sure it was Moltres. It looked me in the eyes. And then it flew straight up into the air, blindingly fast, and disappeared among the clouds. And all was dark again."
Gareth had been listening closely to the story... and was actually fascinated. He nodded.
"I hope you will get to meet a legend one day too," the librarian said.
"I don't have to. They can be legends if they want to," Gareth said, breaking the exciting atmosphere slightly. "I care about real things."
The librarian seemed a bit offended, but smiled weakly back to him. "I see," she said. "Well, I'm sorry that I bored you with my story then."
"No... it was a nice story," Gareth said, just a tiny bit excusingly. "Thanks."
The lady looked happy again. "Do you know what? I like telling stories. But I have bored people not only once." She let out a little laughter and motioned for him to follow her.
They went to a tiny office on the long wall. "Here," she said, taking something down from a shelf. "It's a pretty new copy of the Pokébeast Encyclopedia. It will tell you everything you need to know about pokébeasts found around Kanto."
It was a book, not as heavy as you might think but still not really light. "Uh... thanks. But am I supposed to carry this around?"
"If nothing else, it will give you some more muscles," the librarian teased.
Gareth frowned, but accepted the gift, putting it into his bag. At least it fit there. Now... it really was time to leave. So he waved goodbye to the librarian lady and went outside, taking forth Charm's pokésphere. It was warm in his hand, as he stroke it with his thumb.
((OOC: I decided to take the encyclopedia instead of the Silk Scarf ^^' Hope that's ok.))
