[Discussion] Your early TCG memories

This is going to make me feel old but.....

I started playing with the boys at recess when I was in 5th grade. I remember my Dad telling me I could trade any card except my shiny Machamp. Don't ask why...lol. Then we had a Wizards of the Coast store at the mall that would do Pokemon every Saturday and Dad would take me to that and I could play in the league and earn badges...which I still have to this day. :D

I loved collecting the cards altogether, was one of my favorite things as a kid. Still have most of my collection starting from the late 1990s too. I also remember how badly I wanted the Dark Jolteon card specifically back then.... so much that I printed a picture out and stuck it to a damaged duplicate card I had. lol I still have that too.. my dark-jolteon-but-not-really card :D

It couldn't have been much after the first movie's Burger King promotion that I took an interest in "battle cards" (what I used to refer to TCG cards to distinguish them from other collectable Pokémon cards). One of the first cards I remember seeing was a classmate's Fossil Magmar, which I asked for and he wouldn't let me have. :frown: When I talked to my parents about wanting to get some TCG cards of my own, they got me a book/magazine with pictures of all the classic sets instead. (The book eventually got ruined and now I kind of miss it.)

It probably wasn't until the next school-year that I got my first TCG cards. I remember trading snacks for some Japanese cards, namely Erika's Exeggcute, Brock's Golbat, and Fossil Omanyte, and buying some cards at a school festival, like Fossil Kabuto and Jungle Jigglypuff. My dad also got me the first movie VHS which came with a Mewtwo promo and I got to see the second movie in theaters when they were still giving out Ancient Mew cards. I wish I could remember my first booster pack, or at the very least the first holo I pulled! (I know that my first Japanese holo was Fossil Raichu, but I'm not sure if it was my first in general.)

Somewhere between there I also started collecting bootleg sticker cards from vending machines, which I still adore today.
