Let me tell ya the story of Diggz.
In early 2009, I heard Pokemon Platinum was coming out and decided not only to get back into Pokemon, but to make my first foray into the competitive scene. I learned about EV training and decided one of the first Pokemon I wanted to train for a competitive team was a Sandslash.
The only Pokemon game I still had was Pokemon Sapphire on a barely-functioning DS Lite. I caught one on Route 113 as a Sandshrew. As luck would have it, this guy not only had an Adamant nature, but (as I would later figure out) had perfect IVs everywhere I wanted them. Keep in mind, perfect IVs were rare during 4th gen. It wasn't as easy to breed them back then and some people didn't even allow 6IV mons because they were almost always hacked.
Anyways, back on track, I EV'd the guy after looking up a guide and couldn't think of a name for him. A let's player I was watching at the time called Battlexon was LP'ing Ruby and I had the idea that he could hold a poll for nicknames for Sandslash in his videos. The winning name ended up being "DIGGZ". I transferred him to Platinum after getting and beating the game in March.
Diggz has gone on to be one of my best Pokemon online. He eats up physical attacks and somehow always manages to turn matches around. Everyone in the competitive scene hates Sandslash and thinks it isn't viable, but I think my long streak of victories with him throws their theory down the drain. He helped me win an online tournament in '09 and I still use him to this day on my X game.
Call Sandslash low-tier or inviable all you want; I'll be all the more delighted to whoop more ass with him. When he transfers to Alpha Sapphire, he'll have come full circle.
