On August 8, 2008, Georgian and Russian troops are fighting in the South Ossetia region in Georgia. There are fears that this could lead to a wider war.

I can see this war leaking out of its borders. It's a frightening feeling, but there is no doubt in my mind that it couldn't happen. Not to mention that "warplanes attacked three Georgian military bases and key facilities for shipping oil to the West." I apologize if I missed it, but what was the cause? I did a little research about this. Dur hur. Well, Georgia has asked the US for planes to bring back 1,000+ of its troops from Iraq. I'm just hoping that the US does not intervene, but I won't be surprised if we do something.

I read this in the newspaper... I wanted to post the thread about it. D:

Because they're asking for US help, this is going to degenerate quickly into something worse. If World War Three is supposed to start within the next few years, I think this'll be the first of the events directly leading up to it.
Georgia claims to have downed four Russian planes though, good for them if that's true.

We need better world leaders right now. I honestly don't get the point of war. You are appointed to run the country in order to make it stable and so that people can live their lives in peace but as soon as you have a disagreement with another country you send in your troops to kill people in order to make the country understand what you're saying. Everything can be decided over a calm talk or debate, wars are stupid and nothing good comes out of them.

If no one decides to aid Georgia, I'll be happy. Anything that could lead to world war four needs to be stopped.

Also, by the way guys, world war three is known as The War on Terror. Get the facts straight, homies.

Seems that his mind goes on and off about things.
    Er... What mind?

    Anyway, going back on topic:
I don't believe this is the start of World War III. Do I believe that it's a pretty ugly ordeal?

Yeah, I would. Hopefully this can be solved with just a few little skirmishes, and it doesn't have to become a full-on war. I mean, not all wars have to be horrendous. Look at the Anglo-Zanzibar War. ;D

    Sorry?
When the georgian soldiers kill south ossetia citizens, when two children and their grandmother are crushed by the georgian tank, when the Georgian army has blown up a dam on the river to drown citizens disappearing in basements - it must be sorry!

I must to go to army soon, and I don't want to kill anybody... The western news TV and sites say lies. If you know russian - watch the russian TV and read the russian news sites - there such truth which at all will not suit the progeorgian western mass-media

You ever wondered if your country is lying? Our ones (US, UK etc.) aren't involved in the war (yet) and so our news is objective thus far and has done nothing but state what has happened. Russia on the other hand is involved in the war, and like any warring country, will bend facts to make its citizens feel their nation's government and military is swinging its weight arround correctly.

Georgian soldiers may well have killed South Ossetian civilians, but as far as I can see, Russia has no reason to be involved with any disputes between South Ossetia and Georgia. The area is formerly Soviet but that's about it.

Also, your name, named after the Автомат Калашникова?

It seems Russia is extending its influence.

But it's hard to say they're doing the wrong thing since there's seperatist leaders fighting for freedom from Georgia.

Georgia is fighting to keep itself from losing a province, but if the majority of the people in the province wants to leave, who's to say Georgia has a right to stop it? Democratically, it's too late for Georgia.

I heard there was ethinic cleansing going around in various villages of Georgia. From Georgia's point of view, it must be to keep their country together from being teared apart inside out by Russian immigrants via another seperatist movement--leading to Russia sending its troops in to defend the seperatist's because those seperatists are "Russian citizens."

But something is stupid. If Russia really wanted to resolve the situation, the war should be over in a few days. Yet right now, fighting is going on, they're shooting at each other but nothing's changing. I don't understand why Russia just doesn't run over the Georgian capital and end this stupid war already and something changes. (not necessarily take over Georgia, but just to hurry up and defeat them already)

Over fifty percent of the people living in South Ossetia have Russian citizenship. This is the reason for the Russian intervention. I am also adding a map of the region to show where the conflict is.

On August 11, Russian troops have opened a second front to the war by now invading Abkhazia region of Georgia. There are also reports that Russian forces are advancing to the city of Gori, which is not in the disputed territory. It looks like the war is not going to end soon.
