I love that this happened right after the North Carolina fiasco. That makes it so deliciously satisfying to hear him say that. :P

I know, but that's the thing. If it isn't something you have the authority to change, why put your two cents in? I think it'll hurt him, unfortunately.
No single person is government can do much. A single senator can't pass a law; should they only speak if they know they have enough support to pass one?

I think we need someone in a position of power to stand up for this. It's important in a feet-dragging country like the USA for those of us who would like to live in the 21st century to hear some of our leaders talk like this isn't 1900.

I think it's gonna affect him, because so many people are against gay marriage. I guess we'll have to ride it out until they will accept that we're always gonna exist, and that no amount of banning will get us out of here. Besides all Christians should know what happened to the early Christians in Rome. Apply your knowledge, you know?

I'm not sure if it was just coincidental timing, or if the North Carolina thing pissed him off, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear about this. xD

Some people think it'll hurt his re-election, but the thing is that he's got around 65 percent of America that agrees with him, and that might only be a little more than half, but that's majority, and I think he'll be okay.

I feel that this is a move of political opportunism on his behalf.

Everything can be a move of political opportunism if used correctly.

However, what matters is if the move is needed or not. In this case, a move like this is desperately needed.

So why didn't he say this four years ago during his first election? Sell-out.

I'm now Team Romney. If you have beliefs, stick to them, don't falter, don't hate anyone.

The only thing worse than a bigoted candidate is a bigoted candidate who pretends to be a tolerant candidate.

It's fairly obvious to most people that, in the future, gay rights are going to be like women's rights and coloured rights. People in high places have to start standing up for eventually, so when I look at it like that, it does make some sense.

:/ I totally agree in that this isn't going to help his campaign at all and I don't see how it will get him any votes he wasn't already going to get (and will, if anything, lose him votes) but... even so. Someone had to do it sooner or later. It might not help him personally but it is a step in the right direction and whatever he believes and whatever his motives, I'm glad he's brave enough to take this stance.

Wasn't Obama's issue that he hadn't picked a side? Did you want him to be wishy-washy about his opinion forever? I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. o_O

This may've been his first time officially saying "I support homosexual marriage." but this isn't the first time he's supported the LGBT community... Anyone heard of programs like the It Gets Better campaign? He contributed to that as well. Granted, it was meant to everyone feeling those kinds of feelings, but the primary goal, as even the site states, was geared toward the LGBT community. He may not have said it until now, and it may have indeed been only recently that he was fully okay with same sex marriage, but it's not like this really should be seen as such a bold, new statement from him in my opinion. To me it's basically just an official affirmation of his stance. He's been leaning this way from what I've seen more and more...

And for the people who say it's a power/political move on his part to garner support, well... I have to agree with Triforce. While the latest polls show a 50/50 mark thereabout over the acceptance of same-sex marriage, chances are this is more of a detriment to his campaign than anything. I think it was by and large just him being honest.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about whatsoever if you think Barack Obama is the "sell out" over Mitt Romney, who changes his political views faster than a Kim Kardashian marriage.

Oh, I know. And I agree.

But if he ends up losing over this, I think that would be worse for America.

He should have said this... just after he wins again.

I do think it's about time his stance has changed on the most crucial portion of LGBT rights! What the LGBT community and its allies have been trying to do is change the legal definition of marriage, not the religious definition. It's nice to know Obama finally sees it that way. Though it's not exactly as though he was totally against the LGBT community before.

So why didn't he say this four years ago during his first election? Sell-out.

Someone hasn't been following politics closely enough. Romney's been waffling more than should be humanly possible to get as many votes as possible during his current campaign. And a hypocritical example of his waffling is that when he was Governor of Massachusetts, he passed a healthcare law that came to be known as Romneycare there that is structurally almost exactly identical to the Obamacare he so very much opposes.

For the record, here's proof that Romney's stance on the LGBT community's rights has changed within even the last 10 years, resulting in his current stance: https://www.npr.org/2012/05/10/152431577/romneys-views-on-gay-marriage-also-evolving

And the article also demonstrates that he'll backtrack to vaguely worded sentences just to try to win back any potential votes he's lost so he can get elected.

And also for the record, the economy was a much more important issue in the 2008 election as well.

But I fear I've gotten a little too far off-topic with some of this post.

Sadly I have to agree with the others. If you pay attention to the campaign, Mitt Romney has Flip-Flopped-and Flipped again on all the issues so many times it's not even funny anymore...even for a politician.

Have you seen this about Romney?

I'm happy Pres. Obama supports it, and think two people should get married, regardless of gender, and sexual orientation. What I think is that two human beings should get married, I think marriage is a beautiful thing imo, If someone wants to get married I think its a beautiful idea, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Gays and Lesbians just want love, same as heterosexuals, some think Marriage leads to misery cause theirs failed, I heard a few quote of people I have talks with says this about gay marriage "I think they should have the right to be miserable just like the rest of us", doesnt mean a bad thing. But I think everyone should have a right to be married, I think marriage is beautiful, Heterosexual marriage, and gay marriage. Heck, I heard there is a law down in NC that you can get married to your cousin(unless the cousin is a same sex as you are you cant), but now gay marriage is banned in the NC, geee. Gay Marriage isnt a problem what so ever, alot of people think it is gonna influence a kid's love life when he/she is older, that ridiculous, Ellen DeGeneres were raised and been around heterosexuals all her life. I had friend who was raised by two gay mothers, and he is married with his highschool girlfriend, and has 1 child who is infact 1 year old now. I really think marriage should be a free will thing like love, when it comes to love gender doesnt matter in my eyes, its the person that you grow to love. Thats my opinion.

Obviously I didn't know about Romney's past stances. Politics is wishy-washy.

You shouldn't choose a presidential candidate without actually researching who they are and their stances. That's kind of an important part of who you support.
