  • inb4 oh good, more episodes of just charging/talking/blahblah

Considering this isn't an adaptation of a manga, the chance of there being much, if any filler is unlikely. I'd imagine that there's no possible way that Super could possibly be nearly as long as any of the other anime series (except possibly GT, but that's beside the point.

As long as it goes for 2 seasons I am fine. If this ends up only being 30 eps long there will be rage!

  • I have mixed feelings about this. It makes me happy because I love Dragon Ball. But it makes me angry to know they still want to milk the series with 'new material' after so long. Will this also happen with Naruto? Will the Shounen Jump and TOEI ANIMATION producers ever stop?

    Edit
Clarification: I used Naruto as an example, as you probably know TOEI animation and Naruto are unrelated.

I don't see how it's milking if it's coming out 18 years after its last iteration. In fact, wouldn't a fairer statement be that this is happening with Naruto and that it shouldn't happen to Dragon Ball Z, especially when you consider that Naruto has consistently been running for much longer (1997-2015 and ongoing)?

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that this was probably suggested by Akira Toriyama, himself, earnestly wanting to continue the story. The reason he stopped, after all, was because he'd spent so much time and so many years on Dragon Ball (and other series) that he needed time to spend with his family. Him proposing such an idea isn't too outlandish, and because it's an anime original series, it's likely SJ has nothing to do with its creation. Toei, either, I'd imagine- they have questionable quality, but they aren't the type to force out new content like this.

  • Oh sure, this gets a release window right off the bat but we still know nothing about Digimon Toei why

Yaaaay. I had thought they would just stick to movies, but I guess this works too as long as Toriyama's involved.

Maybe the actual plot hasn't advanced in 18 years, but Dragon Ball stuff has been all over the place everywhere those 18 years.

The original manga ran from 1984 to 1995. The anime from 1986 to 1997 (if we include all the sagas and we ignore any hiatus). We have a ridiculously long videogames list, starting from 1980 to the present. Several movies were released on theaters or via DVD from 1996 to 2006. Plus OVAs, plus TV specials, plus Shounen Jump specials. Let aside there's always at least one network broadcasting Dragon Ball (any of the sagas), it doesn't really matter where are you located.
I won't mention the amount of merchandising around the world, it would take me ages, but there's even a TCG, that says a lot. There was also a spinoff manga (titled SD as far as I remember) that ran in 2012 (2013? I don't remember).

Then the remastered version, Kai, which has been running since 2009. Still ongoing. New movies on 2014, another coming in 2015. Now a new anime has been announced.

How long have we actually been living without hearing the concept of Dragon Ball?

Yes, that is milking a series. I'm a big fan, I don't mind. I just won't neglect something as obvious as this.

Said the above, I couldn't care less, I'm a die-hard fan, I could watch whatever Toriyama is thinking of and still regret nothing.

GT to me, and to many of the fanbase felt like this anime didnt do the series any justice, Akira only did the design.

Dragon Ball Kai was barely re-did it just cut the filler part out, and re-did the script to fit the manga more, and they remastered and recolored it.

Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods was THE first movie in 17 years in the DB Series to release, and its Canon to the manga series. This made a lot of fans in hopes of a new series. Now that Resurrection F is coming out, all this hype of DB fans all over the world is excited to see. Now that a new Arc (Series) of the anime is being continued after Buu Saga since everyone been wanting to know what Akira would have wrote if Toei didnt milk the fudge out of Dragonball with the horrific GT series, we get to see where he would have written, and where the characters would be.

The only thing DB really milked was the Video games. Also the Manga the noncanon ones (the DB Hero mangaka) which wasnt even drawn or written by Toriyama.

Toei only involvement with the new series is the animation, Toriyama is in charge of what they're gonna do and he has written the plot, and it will introduce newer fans, which makes me excited!

Seriously? GT was not good at all, wasnt even written by the creator, it was Toei's way of milking after the HUGE success of Z. that was created in 1997. GT is a noncanon, all anime only thing, Toriyama considers it as a possible timeline (he doesnt consider GT as apart of his DB series).

As for Kai...Kai was just a Re-rendered, Remastered, Cut the filler out of Z (Nothing new about it except the Dialog).
Dragon Ball Super is gonna be a whole new arc, written by Toriyama himself, and it serves as a canon arc of what happens after the Buu Saga. So basically DB Super is knocking GT. also this new arc (Series) is gonna be new animation, not what "Kai" looks like.

As for the New movies, Been 17 years since a new Dragon Ball Z movie when Battle of Gods (As for this movie is canon to Toriyama's DB.) Resurrection F is also canon.

Plus I prefer Kai over Z. Kai is accurate with the script, cuts out the filler the voice acting is so much better (the Funimation English dub). I loved Z growing up I did like some of the filler, but I own the DVDs so I can watch it anytime if anyone pulls that "Nostalgic" excuse. I prefer it cause the manga. lol

As for the new series, im excited, I want to see where Toriyama is going in his DB story. :)

I thuink we already know where its going, the other gods Just have to be the focus. BoG introduced Beerus, one of twelve iirc, and RoF gave us the refinement of the powers to be equal to at least one of the twelve. I can only assume Beerus is the weakest to have ben introduced first, so the series can really go places in terms of exciting battles abd formidable oponnents. I also assume tjis would mean the other saiyans will under go god training, or perhaos there will be sub plots for their power levels?

  • Eh, I don't know about that. I'd say the original Funi dub was a lot more fun, and the voice work was definitely more diverse.

Linda Young's Frieza wasn't that good and it confused me of Frieza's gender for years. Chris Ayres's Frieza was magnificent! He convinced me that Frieza was fearful, ruthless, down right evil. As for Stephanie Nadolny I was sad she was replaced at first, but I've grown to like Colleen Clinkenbeard as Gohan more. Bulma I'm neutral with, I never really liked her to even noticed her voice changed haha. I favor Kais voice over Z. Z seemed more of actors to find the voices of their characters if you noticed from the saiyan saga, Sean Schemmel said he tried to do an imitated of the Canada's voice actor of Goku, and then later on he tried to move it to a different direction, which worked so much better, Kai everyone knew how to direct their voice as their characters.

  • Once Toonami is finished airing Dragon Ball Kai, I am definitely looking forward to seeing Dragon Ball Super. I'll also try to buy the complete DVD set once that's out, but who knows how many episodes this would take.

I saw this on tumblr this morning, I'm so excited. I don't even really watch Anime anymore but this makes me happy. But I didn't like Battle of Gods. All they did was eat and make dumb jokes in that movie. Beerus was lame. I seriously don't see how they can screw this up, especially with Toriyama on board. GT was and still is so awful and despised by the fandom that it looks like even Toei is trying to forget it exists. I'm really getting burnt out on all these SSJ power ups though, with SSJ God, plus the one in the new movie, it's getting ridiculous. I want to see them not waste characters like Gohan and Uub, they all turned out to be so useless, also not back track into the adventure genre like they did in GT. Keep it action based and maybe have more character development. No more Pilaf gang pls.

I don't find they're milking it, people still love the show and want to see it, a lot of fans are adults now and nostalgia is a powerful thing. I'll watch this regardless of the reviews. With the response from the fans with Kai and the newer movies, this seems like the natural path to take.

Isn't the adventure genre the main reason why some find the original Dragon Ball better than Dragon Ball Z?

Yeah, Dragonball is more adventure themed while Z is more action. It's all personal preference. I don't dislike Dragonball, it's awesome in it's own way, well written and fun, but the fact is, GT isn't. I've just always favored Z myself. ;/
