  • So in the trailer, they tease that the game will have a brand new Pokemon in it. From the Japanese press coverage, it sounds like it'll just be one single new Pokemon, so it's probably not a new swathe of Alolan forms, not to mention those don't really count as new Pokemon. So I was wondering what everyone thinks about this!

Personally, I think the most likely candidate is a new Eevee evolution. What better way to introduce it than an Eevee-centric game? But of course, that would depend on whether you can obtain Eevee or Pikachu in the opposite versions, because it would be pretty unfair if only the Eevee version had the new Pokemon. But also, if these games are inspired by Pokemon Yellow and so heavily feature Pikachu/Eevee riding on your arm or head, it seems likely they wouldn't let you evolve them for nostalgia and logistical purposes. So maybe it's not an Eeveelution after all!

If Pikachu wasn't already part of a three-stage evolution chain, I'd almost say the timing would be perfect to follow up on that interview from a few weeks ago and introduce its original final form, Gorochu... ahaha!

    Thoughts?

  • If I had to wager a guess, it's probably a new Kanto-centric mythical or legendary Pokemon. Generation 1 has the three Birds(Zapdos, Articuno and Moltres), Mew and Mewtwo. Dragonite, Arcanine and a few other Pokemon are quasi-Legendary but not officially considered to be ones.

Another possibility is an Eevee Evolution but why add something like that if you can't evolve your Eevee starter like Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow(my only gripe about Yellow version honestly). Really beginning to feel like a Pokemon GO 2.0 but it's still early and things may change for the better.

  • When I saw the trailer my immediate thought was "New Eeveelution" because one of the rumors claimed there would be one and it seemed obvious since it would be perfect for an Eevee-centric game. BUT after thinking on it I'm not so sure... I mean for one thing like stated above it wouldn't really be fair for those that choose the Pikachu version. Another is that it's likely you won't be able to evolve the starter Eevee so what would be the point?
I doubt they'd add both a new Eeveelution AND a new Pikachu evolution... The only other guess I have is Zeraora but that seems unlikely as well.
So I guess new Eeveelution is my current guess though I'm not confident in it.

New gen 8 Eeveelution sounds likely. Maybe a scraped pokemon concept from gen 1 beta.

  • Okay so Polygon is reporting that your partner Eevee and Pikachu cannot evolve... but non-partner Pikachu and Eevee will be able to. So I dunno if they'll go with the Eevee evolution in that case. You'd be able to obtain it, maybe, but it wouldn't be your partner evolving which might ruin some of the emphasis.

So now I'm thinking maybe it'll just be a legendary instead.

  • Here are a few of my ideas as to what this mysterious Pokemon could be:

    1. A new Eevolution: This seems to be the favoured idea, and has a good precedent with Sylveon from Gen 6, however, considering Eevee shares the mascot/partner role with Pikachu with these games, I find it unlikely as it would mean Eevee would take up too much of the spotlight.

    2. Gorochu: For those not in the know, it was recently revealed that originally Raichu would have evolved into this Gorochu Pokemon (this was before Pichu) which would have fangs. The fact that this has been revealed very recently has lead some people to believe that Gorochu could be the new pokemon. However, not only does this suffer from he same issues as an eevolution Pokemon, but it seems highly unlikely that Game Freak would use such an old design that they have recently revealed once existed, yet alone give Pikachu another evolution. However, if we believe that Gorochu becomes an alternate form that Pikachu can evolve into, then maybe it could allow for Pikachu to evolve into 3 possible forms (Kanto Raichu, Alolan Raichu and Gorochu) in the Let's Go games to reflect how Eevee will also have 3 possible evolutions (Flareon, Vaporeon and *Jolteon* - thanks Helmet) then Gorochu may be possible after all - aargh, I have to move onto the next idea before I convince myself.

    3. A new mythical Pokemon: Now this I can see going one of thee ways. Either a new mythical Pokemon would:
    A) Be relevant to the next core games. This could be through a similar theme to the games or having a role (no matter how small) in the region's lore or story.
    B) Bear no relevance whatsoever to the next games and instead is just a placeholder mythical to get people to buy the Let's Go games. This would be more like Volcanion or Zeraora - just sort of there.
    C) Or bear a relevance to the Kanto region. I'm not quite sure how they would go about this and I would say that this is the most unlikely out of all the options, however, it is possible.

    4. A pseudo mascot Pokemon: By this I mean a Lucario/Zoroark Pokemon, which were both 'cool' representatives for Gen 4 and 5 respectively. This Pokemon would probably be bipedal and human like with a cute unevolved form. If we were to assume that this Pokemon would form a triangle with Lucario and Zoroark, then a Psychic typing would make sense. Whilst it has been 2 generations since this 'rule' was used (Sylveon counts only as being a mascot for Gen 6, otherwise it doesn't resemble Lucario/Zoroark that much) I can still see this as being a possibility.

  • Honestly I just think it's a special non legendary gift Pokémon from gen 8 that we would only be able to get in this game. Think of it as getting munchlax/zoura/ midday lycanroc a whole gen early

New Eeveelution makes sense to me. Part of me feels it would be a Ground typed one so if you have the Pikachu version it will counter your starter. That is just a guess though and it could be a mythical from the next generation or something.

Interesting take but the Kanto Eevolutions were Vaporeon, Flareon and Jolteon. Leafeon didn't get added until Generation IV ;)

Since the unique factor of this is dealing with a transferred gift to Pokemon Go, that is a new function that can be used for a new eeveelution. Since this is not the Gen 8 game, it could be the distinction to advertise in order for them to see if they are going to add the Pokemon Go compatibility in Gen 8 Switch pokemon game releasing next year.

As far as pikachu hype along with Eevee, Raichu has an alternate form already and poor Pichu (baby form of Pikachu line) gets forgotten and bypassed again. I don't think they would add in Gorochu, because that would open up possibilities for 4th evolution stage (non-mega), which would be a large can of worms to open.

New legendary or mythical.... ? I don't think they would hand that out for free i Pokemon go since most have needed Raid battles to catch. That is a money maker, which they won't give up.

Is it really going to be a brand new Pokemon though? The reveal trailer simply stated "You'll meet a Special Pokemon". That doesn't imply to me that it's guaranteed to be a completely new Pokemon.

  • Seeing as how past Eeveelutions were introduced every even-numbered generation, this mystery Pokémon may likely be the next!

Then again, it would focus all the hype around Eevee, leaving Pikachu out. And it could just as well be a Legendary, an event Pokémon, a new form, or even Zeraora.

Still, all things considered, my bet is on another Eeveelution!

After the conference presentation, they did a Q&A and that was one of the first questions asked. They verified it would be a brand new Pokemon we've never seen before. :)

It's a scraped pokemon from the Gold and Silver beta. Jk if only. It's most likely a gen 8 pokemon. Like how Pokemon XD had Munchlax and Bonsly.

What if Nintendo's just leading us on and the gift is in fact how you get Mew in the Let's Go games? Probably not, but you never know. At this point it doesn't seem possible it would be Mew. Though in the Generation 1 games Red, Blue and Yellow you could in fact get Mew through a glitch and it did add to your Pokedex and have its own data page. Though they did only say 150 Pokemon. But that may not stop Mew from being able to be in the games anyway.
