Well to sum it up in a few words: Protestants wanted to join the UK, Catholics didn't, they had a big fight over it; assassinations, riots, all out battles. UK deployed troops there to try and keep the peace, and it lasted for 30 years 1968-1998 the final death toll was roughly 3500 most of which were innocent civilians.
