To be honest, a lot of this seems to be about Masuda wanting to pay homage to the games HE directed rather than the 20th Anniversary of the franchise.
First off, we have a tropical, water-logged region that's isolated from all the other regions:

And, legendary mascots (with connections to space) that are part-Steel and part-Ghost (with a likely part-Water one as the third):

And, then we have the protagonists:

Recognize the boy? You should, seeing as we already played as him three times in a row:

And, the girl looks fairly familiar, too:

Seriously, the SM girl looks exactly like she could be the child of those two. o_O
We'll also have a cute, blonde female professor's assistant acting as a pseudo-rival to the protagonist:

And, while not confirmed, the Sun/Moon theme easily lends itself to an Endless Day vs Endless Night plot centered around dueling evil teams. Hmmm...

...
Yeah, methinks that Sun and Moon are going to be the ultimate love letter to Hoenn/Sinnoh/Unova. (I'd also say Kalos, but it seems that GF would rather say f-you to it and its legendaries.) Even though these are supposed to be the big 20th anniversary games, there isn't going to be much in the way of Kanto/Johto nostalgia there. Masuda didn't direct those games, and those fans are all at the ripe old age of 25-30 now, anyways, so who cares, amirite? They should be lucky they're even getting RBY on the VC. :rolleyes2:
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed with everything I've heard about SM so far. :P
