You need to be using a Mon' which is high Lv 90s and maybe even has boosted Ev's. I found that even with one around Lv75 that was not enough. So my suggestion is get a Lv90 with anything above "Great Stats" and boost some Ev's.

As I started in Kanto on blue/red version back in the 90s it was just a great moment to turn the game on and see Kanto in a 3D version... The battle I enjoyed the most was against RED. The funniest moment was realising you could ride in Kangaskhan's pouch.
