Oh god, my ribs! What's with the random HP bit in the middle?

EDIT: In other words, you didn't miss much. Except Asty's idea to redo the stickies, which I feel is the closest this thread is ever going to get to sanity. A good chunk of the rest of it is us (mostly jax) ranting about idea threads.

    Oh god, my ribs!

    *bows*

What's with the random HP bit in the middle?

Classic Harry Potter icon. (I have it on my external hard drive, but it's not exactly PC-friendly due to the fact that it's uncensored. Also, I'm lazy.) It switches back and forth between shots of a shocked Harry and a calm Lupin (from the third movie) with this dialogue:

    Harry: "You're a werewolf?!"
    Lupin: "Yes."
    Harry: "Are you ****ing serious?!"
    Lupin: "Yes. That too."
    Harry: "What?"
    Lupin: "Oops. Too much information."

And if it's still lost on those of you who don't follow this fandom (and its armies of screaming fangirls with their libraries of fanfiction), well, probably better off as a fandom in-joke, then.

I did NOT ask anyone to beta my prologue. I asked for opinions. They are two completely different things.
Technically, they are the same thing since everyone would probably point out typos and grammar mistakes and give opinions on what they think is good or not. That's beta-ing.

Ah, now I get it, Jax. ;) That's quite clever, actually. And Kyuu-chan, I think that was meant to be a joke.

You posted your prologue, asking us to give you feedback (on story, character, language, and possibly grammar) before you're actually ready to go ahead and post it in a story thread in the main forum.

What did you think betaing was? =/

Yeah well, I wasn't exactly in the mood for a joke.

Only part of it was a joke. I'm serious when I ask you what you thought betaing actually was, considering there seems to be some misinformation here. =|

I mean, sure, if you give us an excerpt of a chapter and ask us because you're uncertain about a particular part, that's one thing. If you just give us an entire chapter that you haven't posted yet and don't ask us anything other than, "What do you think?," that's not just asking for a vague opinion. That's actually asking us to go over everything about that chapter with you (particularly because you didn't specify what it is you want us to be looking at), which, because you haven't posted that chapter yet, means you're asking us to be your temporary beta-readers due to the very definition of the term "beta reader."

If you want our opinion, you might as well ask us specific questions and give us excerpts related to those questions, rather than just giving a whole (as of yet unposted) chapter and asking us, "'Kay, opinions, plz?" Because we can't give you opinions if we don't know what it is you want us to give opinions about, and giving opinions on an entire unposted chapter = betaing, no matter how you look at it.

Edit: To better define "beta reader" in order to get on the same page, a definition, courtesy of Wikipedia:

A beta reader (also spelled betareader, or shortened to beta) is a person who reads a written work, generally fiction, with what has been described as "a critical eye, with the aim of improving grammar, spelling, characterization, and general style of a story prior to its release to the general public."

So, yes. You're asking for a beta.

You guys are all crazy! *beams at everyone and sits down*

Yes, well, at least my therapist says I'm getting better.

But on the other hand, I'm not entirely sure if my therapist exists.

That's okay metaphysics is always a fun topic. If you said you had a talking murderous leprechaun, I'd probably believe you, despite the fact that idea has already been used. XD

    Hey, guys. 'Sup? :classic:

The whole thing about the Lounge is that it's so crazy and I love this place. It keeps my Mood EVs high, which is something I need these days. Besides, omg, I really like you, people. You're the most awesomest and entertaining crew I've come upon since 2006.

About the thread split or remake thing, well, if it has to happen it has to happen, as long as the current spirit of the Lounge survives somehow, it's all well.

Seriously, though, to Citrinin, yeah. Now, just imagine that kind of stuff in every fandom. I get the feeling dA consciously tries to adhere to Rule 34 because, seriously, if you can search for it, they've got smut for it. No exceptions. (And I totally did not test this, wut?)
    I did What?

No, you people don't want to know. Please...

    Astinus said:
It's actually the fact that the rate of topic turnover in this thread is much too fast, and topics that could lead to discussions that could possibly go on for pages are lost in the off-topic shuffle.

So the new FFL is going to start off with a brief explanation that the simple topics go in this thread, and the "big" discussions go in their own threads.
Yeah, I had though about that, but somehow the idea became lost and I suggested two different "general discussion threads" instead, but given te kind of forum that was not the best idea (I mean, we have the Other Writing section, yes?).

How are we whoever are worthy qualifying "big discussions"? For one I support the idea that the "bolded questions" can be effortlessly discussed here, but when does a bolded question become a thread of its own? Maybe I missed something, you know...

And, about the "bolded questions", as a means of contributing something to this group of people I'm thinking of indexing the bolded topics that have been discussed so far during this year. Partly for fun (I wonder what things are going to surprise me when I start rolling back pages...), partly because... well... something. I don't know exactly what. Oh, yes, maybe because it's becoming incredibly difficult to locate those topics. Seriously, the last 10 topics hae me rolling back and searching for the last 30 pages. WTH, hero?

For example, guys, if anyone feels like overthinking whether the Pokémon we choose for our fics have a particular meaning, you can either try and search (go on, I'll be right behind laughing) or go here (by Ebon Blade) and start rolling forward. Or, have you ever thought how to name Lati@s' forelimbs? That I want you to do a search for... or not. I'll still be laughing, anyways.

    On another subject...

(The whole reason why I'm pushing this change is the fact that leaving the new unposted thread open in a tab in Firefox is seriously slowing down my laptop. I will be getting a new computer once I convince my mother that I do indeed enjoy my Sims way more than being online.)
Hey, I forgot how crippling Firefox s in low-to-medium end machines. Thanks for remembering! I should go to adverstise Opera...

Going back to the previous subjects (seriously, people, that's like, the first and only thing I do here  ), answering to some of the previous questions.

[...] how far ahead do people write ahead before posting a chapter?

Depends. There's a story, I haven't published anything yet but there are already ten chapters written. Then there's my most current work where I essentially posted everything I had, except for a couple of snippets that I have kept as plot leverage. Yes, leverage. 2/3 of my FF fics fell in the land of zombie fic because of this.

BTW after "all" the discussion we had on my topic (that post, and sparse posts in the following three pages) about that, which I guess was the kind of questions that would have been better left to their own thread, it's likely I'll open a new thread to keep asking questions with regards to that perspective flip... But first I'm going to wait to see if this thread closes -- lols let's see them trying that after all they said "let's wait until the activity dies then close and fork" or something like that. I mean, where else can we discuss the plausibility to train Chanseys in the proper (read: violent) usage of flamethrowers?

Destiny fics annoy me. Like any genre, they can be great reads if done well, but . . . the folks at Serebii don't seem to know how to do them well. There're so many n00bfics there, it's not funny. You'd think they'd have higher standards than ff.net, considering ff.net is barely moderated, but there is some real crap on there. Yami has a field day . . . every day.

Fan fictions in general can be a very cool and yet very disturbing thing. That's all that has to be said on the subject... I mean this is the internet, god knows there's something for everything...
