Ok, here's the thing. I used to think that was a good motto. But, after a few weeks with a psychologist and the material taught by her I've realised that having thoughts and feelings are inevitable. The mind will have them no matter what, that is its job. Sometimes they are positive, often they are not. It's a good thing we are having thoughts, but our thoughts don't always represent who we are as a person. A better way of doing things is to evaluate your values, and when a thought pops up think "Never mind my mind". That means that you will always have thoughts, they are inevitable, but you don't always have to follow them.
Whenever you have a thought say to yourself "Thank you Mind, for telling me that..." or "I am aware that i'm having the thought that...:" So that way you're aware of what your head is thinking and then it's up to you to make a decision based on who you are and what you want. It's much better than listening to everything your brain says or impossibly trying to repress thoughts :)
Good to hear you're stepping out of your comfort zone if that is what you want to do, although I doubt my old method was very successful, try this one if you want.
