I haven't watched the video yet but I haven't bought a Pokemon game since my Generation 1 days when I was still in Middle School(when Yellow came out). Friend bought Gold version and hence I got a taste of what Johto and Generation 2 was like but since that day, I've largely been ignorant of the Pokemon gaming scene(hence abilities, natures, IV's/EV's and all that strategy stuff I have like ZERO knowledge on in addition to the 600+ Pokemon that have debuted since then. I've kept tabs on the Anime though, hence characters that appear in the games but not in the Anime(Wally, Zinnia, Lisia, etc.), I had no idea existed until like a year or two ago).
I've always thought that you make your money and garner loyalty from fans on one-time transactions. Having monthly subscriptions or charging money for continued access(like most RPG's, hence FF14, WoW and even EVE I don't play because they charge you for the game AND to play over time. Its why I love Starcraft 2 because its a one time cost to buy the game and online play is free).
What this is going to lead to is people choosing not to buy their product or seeking out third party people that they've never met before and blindly trusting them to do a trade. I can tell you right now that criminal elements could use this to their advantage(as sickening as that sounds).
