Have you ever written any stories involving criminal Pokemon gangs, whether they are canon-based or made up (e.g. Team Rocket, Cipher, Team Imgoingtothrowapieinyourface, etc)?

Heck yeah. My evil team was formed by an architecht who was brought up to be an extremely competitive and profit-minded by his father. As a result, he is a very cold person and ready to do almost anything to gain profit - hence the "evil" - and is also very rich due to his company - hence the "team" - and has discovered the possible possibilities of the ablities of Legendary Pokémon - hence the "Pokémon". So, it's an evil Pokémon team.

But I don't believe in such thing as evil for pure evil, I think there's a reason and motive for everything. So, even though I might never explain it in my fic, I still have to know why the evil team is evil, why people join it and why it was formed. I don't like the idea of killing Pokémon with sharp knives for pure fun, because to me, it doesn't sound all that credible. Maybe if the team hates Pokémon more than anything because something has happened or something, then they can go around with sharp knives and kill random critters that cross their path. That's more credible. To me, at least.

So, yeah, I spend hours on creating backstories that will never see the daylight. I need it to maintain my peace of mind... I can't write about a character if I don't know who they are and why so, I just can't. I've even made up nasty details of Brice Ackland's childhood... His younger brother definitely had it easier, but it was mostly because they have different personalities. Oh man, I could talk about the Ackland family and their drama for hours, because I literally spent hours thinking it through. I have every single detail, sibling, age, Pokémon and relationship thought through. Does anyone else do that?

On an unrelated note, Cimi is actually related to the Acklands. Too bad her grandmother was born outside of marriage even though her mother was indeed married. So, no money for her. Interesting y/n?

I'm going to shut up now.

I think if I ended up doing that, the backstory would either become more tragic or boring (or a bit of both).

And right now I really want to start my Zombie fic, however my essay is hanging over me like a dagger.

The characters in my Pokemon fanfic don't lend themselves well to any other kind of conflict that can carry an entire multi-chapter fic, so...yes. My fics have the Rockets, and two teams that I kinda pulled outta my ass made up.

The last team, by the way, would sound better if it was I'MA GONNA THROW A PIE IN YA FACE!!11@?!#@@?!

Nope. I write as I go, with as little planning as possible. My characters have very little back story to them, unless it's necessary to the plot.

That's only my Pokemon characters, though. ;< Other fandoms that I write in? The characters that are my own, I know a lot about. The canon characters (especially one in particular from a certain book series!) I try to know as much as I can, and fill in the holes where possible. (For some characters, I even let their Sim personalities help me out. Not too much, though, for then a certain book character who is a "genius" would be going "HOW I WALK AROUND HOUSE??!?!?!" and waving his arms all the dang time.)

This could be why I'm not as proud of my Pokemon fics as I am of my fics for other fandoms.

-

Now, about the changes that I talked about: I couldn't get on PC during the time I was sitting around bored, so I couldn't implement said changes yet. I'm going to try, even though I have work the rest of this week.

Also, I have to fix my Sims game. Something borked in it last night, so now I have to abort babies. (HOW IS BABBY ABORTED?!?!?!?!??!?!? WITH A GRILL!!!!!!!11!)

Was it Team Shiny, Team Shining, or Team Nightmare? A little help Asty? Oh well, the point is I did, and the fic itself was pretty good. But as usual, writer's block killed me. Brutally and with a Pikachu's severed head.

I usually do. I would think up of backstories of my characters to give myself an idea of what makes them who they are in the story. Most of the time though, the backstories aren't used in the story as it might slow the plot and not relevant to the story.

A bit weird, yeah. I don't think every detail through, rather make it up when I'm daydreaming so I end up having an idea for what I want when I write it. It's a pretty good method, although it's weird when people see me swinging my arms and sometimes whispering to myself.

I do this, for my new fic I've got everything you've listed there for each of my characters.

It helps me to fix holes that I find in my writing.

Hmm, no, not really. I can create a character one of two ways--first, I'll start off with the concept of a character and then work it into the 'fic somehow; possibly the character idea will be the catalyst for the 'fic, where I'll think of a person and then wonder about their story. Alternatively, I'll need my character to meet someone, in which case the character usually grows into their role. My characters start out as concepts like, "a snobby know-it-all who actually isn't a very good trainer" or "a young girl who is the first trainer." At no point do I get a brainwave along the lines of "teenage male with blonde hair with two professor parents and a younger sister who likes ice cream." If I need to, I'll think about whether my character has a family, likes or doesn't like something, or what have you. It's not planned--something will feel right about the character, or it won't.

Whee, writing, yeah, how fun. How can I write so much in response to stuff like this and have trouble with a freakin' ten page double-spaced paper? I have no clue. Papers suck. School sucks. God, why do I even go to college. I should just go live outside Starbucks or something in a cardboard box with my laptop and a solar battery charger or some other way of keeping my laptop actually charged and free wireless internet and I'd be happy. The whole starving thing would be an issue, though. I'll need to work out a way to download food from the internet before I carry out such a brilliant plan.

Heh, either the super long delays between chapters or the sheer crapfest that the original TFC became caused that to happen before, and it's probably happened with TRINITY now due to how long it takes me to put out those chapters, compounded with how it hasn't really established itself yet. Everyday it seems like I manage to fine-tune the world and work out more details, so it's getting there and yes, I am actually working on chapter 3.

Personally I think this little flashback kind of thing that it's in right now sucks hardcore and that I pretty much completely ruined it due in part to me trying to rush too many details about the world in before I had even ironed them out. Also there's that I'm trying to fit too much action and cool stuff in when the simple fact is that really the only kind of action I'm decent/good at are single encounters (see the fight with the assault drone in chapter 2) and where I truly shine is plot development and characterization. But since I don't feel like starting over again (I don't know how I'd do it anyways. The simple fact of the matter is that what's going on now has to happen unless I want to change a lot of details) I just want to hurry this up and get to the start of the story proper.

Right now I'm having conflicts over rather I want to work on TRINITY chapter 3 or TFC chapter 4, so I'm working on both on and off (take the train trips this weekend. From school to home I worked mostly on TFC with a splash of TRINITY at the end, while on the way back I did mostly TRINITY with a splash of TFC). Yep.

Have you ever written any stories involving criminal Pokemon gangs, whether they are canon-based or made up (e.g. Team Rocket, Cipher, Team Imgoingtothrowapieinyourface, etc)?
Not specifically gangs per se, but I naturally have the obligatory evil organizations present and accounted for in both TFC and TRINITY. TFC has CORE (Central Organic Research and Engineering), a corporation that, as per the name, used to be an R&D company. Before the story starts they have been fallen under new leadership, the enigmatic and pompously named Lord Fira (I may change it to something like Mr. Fira, but it makes him sound too much like some sort of executive or politician or something...). To the world at large the change in leadership hasn't changed the company much, however one of the central points of the first half of the story is how the characters are drawn into this conspiracy centered around CORE, which eventually comes to a head in the second half.

Also in TFC there's the Crimson Dawn. They're this crazy religious cult centered around old scriptures that they claim reveal the truth of the world's creation, with Pokémon having been created by the angel Zeruel against the will of the gods. Believing that this act, which the gods had to tolerate due to their vow of noninterference in the state of worldly affairs, was blasphemous they have tasked themselves with the rather unlikely goal of exterminating all Pokémon in the world.

In TRINITY there's just one big evil team, CYPHER Corp. (Cybernetic Pokémon and Human Enhancement Research Corporation). Note that they have NO relation to Cipher. I didn't even remember that Cipher existed when I came up with the name. They're a huge company that has formed a monopoly over the cybernetics industry in the futuristic setting of TRINITY, although at the outset of the story the main character Tashima is convinced that they're hiding stuff and so does some digging that ends up getting him and his Typhlosion pal/roommate Havoc entangled in CYPHER's web of conspiracies and secrets. TRINITY has much less focus on the whole good/evil thing than TFC does, however, and so they're really not that evil at all. Their president, Cygnus Alvaron, simply has his own ideals of what the world should be like that when you consider the setting actually make some sense. That doesn't mean they can't commit evil deeds, though.

If you really wanted to make it disturbing (and to eb away from canon-comedy) you can make this team really sadistic. Should I say to go as far as killing pokemon just for fun? >.> To make it worse, instead of involving crazy machines, use simple things like sharp knives (for the plushy ones; and I think I am now sounding like a Joker-like villan, or Hannibal).
That's pretty much how the Crimson Dawn rolls. They do have a reason though besides the sheer fun of killing Pokémon (the whole they think they're abominations and all thing). However, you hit the nail right on the head with using knives; the Crimson Dawn exclusively use bladed weapons (from small knives to swords) against Pokémon, believing that by establishing a direct physical link between them and the Pokémon they can channel the wrath of the gods through their weapon in order to inflict as much pain as possible

Spoilers regarding the Crimson Dawn and their true nature:

Ooooo I just thought of something, not sure if it has been done (though I bet it has), but a fic about Zombie Pokemon, lol.
Oddly, that's kind of what I did for my entry in the latest Exquisite Corpse. When I started it it was simply going for a psychotic Pokémon kind of thing, but as I continued I added references to standard horror conventions (namely video games, such as with guns and ammo just lying around everywhere for you to conveniently find) and culminated in the evil psychotic Pikachu needing to be shot in the head to kill. Not a full fic or anything as it's exactly one page in length, but...it has been done :D

Which is a shame because, come on. ZOMBIES. This fandom needs a good zombie apocalypse.
If it wasn't for this 10 page paper I have due Thursday; college nearing the end of the semester and so a liberal amount of exams scattered about; a new resolve to actually go to class, study and try to do well; my current obligations to not one but two fics; and a personal desire to write one of those private things which as I have already made clear in the past are surely not porn by any stretch of the imagination, I would be up for the task. I'm so up to it that I've thoroughly read the Zombie Survival Guide not once but twice, so if I were just to apply Pokémon to my knowledge...

Not quite to that extent, but the vast majority of my time in class and such is spent thinking about various plot elements of my stories so by this point I've gotten most of the character's personal histories and how they all end up (including rather they live or die) worked out. Unless something such as a person's family is too important to the plot, however, I don't spend that much time working on those details which will never surface.

I do have a handful of the current canon teams in A Darker Day, but I really couldn't say any more *coy smile*

I'm like Astinus; I write as I go. I always have a vague plan where the chapter and characters will go, but once I get on the ride, I have to follow where my muses are taking me - I'm holding the reins but they are leading the way.

I don't pre-plan my stories, at least not on paper. That is the fastest way to kill a fic for me. It's like taking all the energy that could be getting into the actual act of writing and throwing it into the wind :(.
I think it is sad how many writing books look down upon not writing a story with a outline. Planning just does not work for all people...

ASTINUS YOU'RE A GENIUS THAT WOULD BE FREAKING HILARIOUS! I think I have to make sims of Sora and Usa-chan (the characters in my parody *cough* that hasn't been updated in forever) and then use those sims as the base of their character... Because how funny would it be to have the oh-so-good Sora-chan be all "HOW CAN I PUT BOOK ON FLOOR WHEN USA-CHAN IS STANDING THERE I DO NOT UNDERSTAND!!" and waving her hands. "HOW CAN I THROW POKEBALL" and so on. Oh my god, that's a great idea. I love you, Astinus! I love you so much!

Hmm... I also do that. You see, I don't have the actual story planned. I only have the backstory planned. That way, I can really give the lead to my characters, because I know who they are and what they're likely to do. I've been planning backstories very carefully for quite some time, since I noticed my characters' personalities tended to change a lot in my stories. A lot meaning "uh, didn't she have blue eyes just now? Also, doesn't she hate dogs? And why is she suddenly yelling, when she's always so calm?".

Thus, my tendency to carefully plan backstories was born. I have tons and tons of paper in my room, filled with teensy tiny details of character X who never actually came to be. I have characher scetches, notes of their traits, family trees, maps, short stories and random details lying all over the place. I draw my characters over and over and over again until I finally decide what they look like and so on. Then, I start writing, and I pretend I am them. That way, the story writes itself.

I also really, really love making all those maps and scetches and backstory plans. Sometimes I even like it better than writing the actual story. So, yeah. I'm nuts.

I do a combination of planning and write-as-I-go these days. For instance, I have the endings to both of my fics more or less planned out, but very little in between. And I develop backstories only when necessary, such as for Darkrai, who has an extremely important one. "Backstories" is one word, and I don't care what Firefox says, dangit.

I do have a lot of backstory for characters, but I've never considered writing it down before. I have a particularly complicated character, who is a weretiger assassin with more enemies than friends, and she can be quite a nightmare to keep track of, so I may well steal your idea of writing everything down on paper.

Yeah, my thesis time is turning out like that... :P

I should be gone and start doing something useful... right now.

Oh... Backstory. Don't. Get. me. Started. on. it. :P

I'm like An-chan in this one. I've wrote more backstory for my characters that I've wrote the actual fics. After all, I already have everything: from small character bios to TV-documentary like biographies for them, "what would you do if..." tests, speech samples, potential shipping graphs, power/ability datasheets for the Pokémon, etc...; and then, region history encyclopedia plus a canon sweep timeline, just in case, a map (thanks to NinjaCaterpie for the suggestion), "Ghibli Hill"-like scenes for description, little nitpicks and details about the world, and entry-point scenes for canon stand‑ins and guest characters. Lots and lots of information that has actually turned into a freaking DATABASE... So? -- Maybe I should just switch around the material, push backstory to actual-story, just to get something more published...

I'm overdoing it backwards, it seems. And not at the best time to do it.

Oh no...Astinus, be prepared for a lot of people complaining, "Why isn't my fic Fanfic of the Month?"

Honestly, I'm all of great fics to be recognized and that's why sometimes awards and other things like Fanfic of the Month are fun. That's why I enjoyed the recent Serebii Fanfic Awards and also the ones at PokeMasters Forums. However, I'm afraid there will be complaints as to why their fics aren't awarded and also they might get hurt. Also, not to mention we recently had a huge argument over awards and "best fic" lists.

So yeah, I'm half and half on FotM being back. However, it's going to be interesting to see how this goes. :)

EDIT: For a second I thought the FotM for April is celuthea's fic, "A Darker Day." XD Speaking of which celuthea, finish the next chapter already! *gets shot*
