The Monotype Challenge

Welcome! I'm sure that just by looking at the name of the challenge, you probably already have a good idea of what this challenge is. After all, this isn't a new concept. People have been doing play-throughs using only one type of Pokémon for years, even before the inception of the term Challenge in the Pokémon fandom. This is the original challenge, a concept instilled in our minds by the in-game Gym Leaders who all seem to be Monotype Trainers of their own world. I take no credit for this concept - I don't think any one person possibly could. What I hope to do is to give an environment to exercise the ideals of this challenge, and give people recognition for completing a journey with unique challenges.

The sixth generation of Pokémon is now upon us, and with it comes a new generation for the Challenge world - a perfect time for a fresh start. This thread represents my full adoption of the Monotype Challenge - before this thread, I was merely keeping an old thread with many posts alive. As such, I had very little flexibility for altering the rules without intruding on the fact that other people had already completed the challenge in a different way. But now, I am presenting the challenge in a thread all my own, and I can present it to you the way I believe it should be presented. My hope is to bring you the best experience possible. I think that's enough introductions, so let's get this show on the road!

Rules

1. Your final team must consist of at least 2 Elite Four-viable Pokémon who share the type you specified in your sign up. No Pokémon may be used in Trainer Battles outside of that specified type. Monotypes may not be stacked into a single run. (ie, using Vileplume and Victreebel and calling it both Poison and Grass monotypes)

2. A Pokémon of your type must be obtained before you earn your second badge. If this is impossible in your game, you may hack or trade a single Non-Legendary Pokémon of your type within your region's Pokédex. See below for a list of qualifying challenges. No hacking is permitted otherwise. Any hacked Pokemon must be 100% legal by the Trade Corner definition. Hacking or trading items into your game is never permitted. Before you obtain the first Pokémon of your type, you may only use your starter Pokémon.

3. Pokémon outside your type may be used as long as they evolve into your type by the end of the challenge.

4. All Pokémon on this list plus Mega Lati@s are banned from use in this challenge: Banned Pokémon in Battle Maison

5. Trading is permitted for evolution, and obtaining version exclusive Pokémon in your region's Pokédex that cannot be obtained otherwise, as long as its level does not exceed the highest level on your team. No Egg Moves for this trade in. You may hack Pokemon to evolve if they evolve by trading if you are incapable of doing so. If the Pokemon requires an item, wait til you have the item before hacking the evolution. Using a trade evolution patch on a ROM is also acceptable.

6. HM Slaves are permitted. They do not need to match your type.

7. Hacked ROMs are permitted. Total hacks are only viable for single challenges. Hacks featuring an official region may be used for Ultimate Challenges.

8. Pokéwalker and Pokémon Dream Radar may be used to obtain Pokémon of your type for the challenge, as long as they are imported directly into the game you are playing and not traded in from a separate game.

9. Dark- and Steel-type are exempt from needing Kanto for Ultimate Challenges, since the type was introduced in Generation 2, with only Magnemite being available in FireRed and LeafGreen with one of these types.

10. Pokémon-Amie Bond may not be maxed (Sylveon only needs 2 hearts to evolve). Mega Evolution is permitted, but only Mega Evolutions that start off as your type and stay your type after evolving are allowed. No using Mega Charizard X in Flying or Dragon Monotypes for example. Only 2 Mega Stones held per team at any time.

11. An Ultimate Challenge is accomplished by reaching the End Game of one game from all six official region using the same type. They do not need to be completed in chronological order. Fairy type only needs Kalos and Hoenn to complete.

12. Should you want to play outside the standard rules, You may opt out of championship by setting your Challenge Mode to Freeplay. Freeplay allows you to play the Monotype challenge how you want to while still being able to post updates. However, those who use Freeplay cannot be listed on the Champions list.

End Game Points
These points are considered the end of the game.
Kanto - Defeat Champion Blue (your rival) at the Indigo Plateau
Johto - Defeat Red at Mt. Silver
Hoenn - Defeat Steven (Ruby/Sapphire, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) or Wallace (Emerald) at Ever Grande City
Sinnoh - Defeat Cynthia in the Pokémon League
Unova - Defeat Ghetsis in N's Castle (Black/White), or Defeat Iris in the Pokémon League (Black 2/White 2).
Kalos - Battle AZ at the end of the game.
Hacks - Determined by player (usually, this is the Champion of the hack)

Exceptions
The following type-version combinations are allowed the one hack mentioned in rule #2:
- Ice Type in Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, and White Versions
- Fighting Type in Blue Version
- Dark Type in Gold, Silver, and Crystal Versions
- Ghost Type in Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, Black, and White Versions
- Dragon Type in Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, and White Versions

The following type-version combinations are allowed the one hack if you have no access to the Pokéwalker or Pokémon Dream Radar:
- Ice Type in HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black 2, and White 2 Versions
- Dark Type in HeartGold, and SoulSilver Versions
- Ghost Type in Black 2 and White 2 Versions
- Dragon Type in Black 2 and White 2 Versions

Rule #6 applies to fossil Pokemon you do not chose when being forced to only pick only one. The following games qualify:
- Red, Blue, Yellow, Leaf Green, and Fire Red for Omanyte or Kabuto.
- Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald for Lileep or Anorith
- Black and White for Tirtouga or Archen
- Black 2 and White 2 for both Tirtouga and Archen
- X and Y for Amaura or Tyrunt

Nice to see the brand new Ultimate Monotype thread! I don't want to start any new challenges, but as I'll be slowly going through my copy of Pokemon Y to finish all of my ultimates, I'd like to go ahead and get my stuff from the previous thread transferred!

Also, I've made quite a bit of progress on my Steel run on Ruby, so I figured I'd go ahead and kick off my updates in the new thread with an update on this challenge!

In my last update, I had made it up to Mauville and was training before taking on Watson. Since then, I managed to defeat Watson (his Magneton was a pain), and travel through the Fiery Path to the route right before Fallabor Town, where I caught my third and final team member, Skarmory! I spent some time training it, then continued around to Meteor Falls to move along with the game. After I defeated Team Aqua on top of Mt. Chimney, I at last arrived in Lavaridge Town, where I defeated Flannery, who was surprisingly easy. I then traveled to Petalburg, where I defeated Norman (pretty easy again because I resist Normal attacks). Then I traveled to the eastern part of Hoenn and up to Fortree City, where I had little trouble defeating Winona. I then went south and east to Lilycove, and defeated Team Magma at Mt. Pyre and in their hideout. Having completed that, I surfed to Mossseep where I took on and defeated the twins Tate and Liza. After earning my seventh gym badge, I finished up the plot line with Team Magma, eventually defeating Groudon in the Cave of Origin. And currently, I'm training up my team before taking on Wallace!

Well, I guess I have all singles now? I seem to remember Necrum saying there would be a link to previous Ultimate Champions (through Gen 5)...

Anyway, I have completed all types through Gen 5, although I am still in the postgame of my Water monotype on Black 2, so I will be posting updates on that when I get to it. :)

I forgot to add it when I submitted the thread yesterday, but as soon as I saw that the thread was live I put it in there at the beginning.

You don't have to have singles. I can just keep your stuff in Ultimates until it's able to be finished.

I've told you this: you can find skourpi in the great marsh in pokemon pearl, which is in the town with the 4th gym but can be accessed before beating the third

Well for one thing, it shows you actually read the thread, which is very important. For another, it makes it much easier for me to add people when updating if I can copy and paste a name with no formatting, as copying the username area of a post heading can sometimes create weird problems.
