Do you think we'll see more PMD games in the future?

  • I dunno if anyone has noticed, but there's been some strong silence on any additional future PMD games. Do you guys think we'll eventually get a Gen 7 one, or would Super PMD be the last one that we're getting?

  • Super PMD was... not great. I didn't like the format, but I understand why they might have wanted to try something different since I kinda found the usual PMD format to get kind of tedious by even the second game. But I didn't like the direction they branched out in and, if they do another one, I'd prefer it go back to its roots a little more.

I have no idea how they sold, but Super MD seemed extra kid-friendly and I'd be surprised if younger kids were as into the mystery dungeon format, so I feel like it probably didn't sell too well???? So maybe that was it for the series. :(

  • I certainly hope Pokemon Super MD isn't the last one that we get; it's a very creative series that has a lot of potential to shake things up story-wise and give pokemon more definitive personalities. It might be a bit too late at this point for Gen. 7, but Chunsoft is still around so perhaps we'll see something for Gen. 8

Total sales for the series basically looks like this:

Super MD was supposedly the best-selling game it's first week in Japan, though that statement is meaningless by itself since would need to know what else was selling that week for comparison.

Whether or not the sales spell the end for the series, idk.

I'd really love to see more, but I'm also starting to think we're not gonna see more. Explorers of Sky was the first of two games to date which have ever brought me to tears, though I agree the last two entries have been weaker in my opinion. ...though, Gates to Infinity DID make me fall in love with a Gurdurr, so I guess it was doing SOMETHING right.

I'd also have liked another Ranger game... seems like the story based spin-offs are not having such a great outlook lately.

  • I'm starting to think if there isn't one announced for the Switch within the next year or so, then Super PMD might be the last entry. :<

  • I really hope it's not the last. Those sales figures are pretty disconcerting. :(

You know what I think would be cool? A Pokémon Mystery Dungeon with elements of old platform games. Something like Spyro or Croc, only you play as a Pokémon. I think this could have a lot of potential, especially considering it'd be made for the Switch.

Ouch that's... way worse than I thought.

I think it's rather telling, though, since I literally did not know Gates to Infinity was a thing and I always considered myself a pretty big fan of the Mystery Dungeon series, rip.

Looking at that graph makes me sad.

As much as I would like one, it doesn't look like it will be much of a money maker. I mean sure, it is pretty much guaranteed to sell a reasonable amount, but there are probably way more profitable options (at least in pitch) that are on the table at this point. I say I would want another one, but what I really just want is another old one. With the graphics from the GBA/DS era, the games had to rely on their story to be good. Now so much money goes into funding the graphics that there just isn't room in the budget for good story writing and some actual post game. Since this next game would definitely need to be on the switch, they can't just reuse the graphics from Gates to Infinity like they did for Super, or for Time/Darkness/Sky from Red/Blue Rescue. The game isn't worth the cost. Sadly.

    I can't believe Gates sold more than Super... ;-;

I certainly hope we get a new one
I'll be honest, I preferred the ds ones because of their smaller character sprites. When they released the 3DS version with the bigger character sprites and smaller field of vision, it annoyed me and I found it hard to get into it
Blue rescue team was my favourite and likely always will be

  • What I've always felt about the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, is how amazing it's storyline is made and how different it is from most other Pokémon games. Spike Chunsoft certainly has made some extraordinary Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games. As new hardware is made, new graphics and objects are made to take full advantage of the new hardware that it's made for.

Storywise, I liked all of them. But if I had to pick, it would be a tie between Super Mystery Dungeon and Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky. Gates to Infinity was also amazing in how it was able to handle the cutscenes and the animations of the Pokémon (.bcmdl) models, so too was Super Mystery Dungeon.

As for gameplay mechanics, Explorers of Sky had the best out of all of them. The Adventure Squad games on WiiWare did lack some things that Explorers of Sky had, but was the first 3D Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game. Sadly it didn't get released outside of Japan due to the GFC that occurred in 2009-2010, resulting in poorly selling games to never be localised into other languages. As for Gates to Infinity, it lacked many of the gameplay mechanics that previous PMD games had, and no longer had a breeding mechanic or different genders for Pokémon, also only had a handful of Pokémon, mostly Unova Pokémon, and a few from other regions, but had a new dungeon mechanic called gridless floors, which allowed Pokémon to move around freely until they moved into an enemy Pokémon and would start a battle. Super Mystery Dungeon did bring back a few functions, but removed the gridless floors from Gates to Infinity, but did include all the Pokémon except for Volcanion.

As for sales, from what I can see, Explorers of Time/Darkness sold very well. But Explorers of Sky, despite being a more improved game, sold poorly, probably because of three things:
    1. Same storyline as Explorers of Time/Darkness
    2. From what I've heard, Explorers of Sky didn't manufacture many copies anywhere.
    3. The GFC may have contributed to it's downfall in sales, which also leads to #2 which is stated above.

Will we get another Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game? Why yes, it's possible! But to get better sales, it will need to include all mechanics from previous PMD games, including gridless floors and gendered Pokémon (along with the breeding mechanic). But it will need significant new mechanics into the game too (eg. Hub overworlds in which can be explored in a gridless floor-like function from Gates to Infinity). It will also need functions that allow players to interact locally and over the internet, to give it a good purpose to even be enjoyed by anyone. It will also need to be localised into Korean and Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, and South Korea has never had a PMD game after Explorers of Time/Darkness.

To me, I've always loved the 3D PMD games, mostly because of the capability in what it can really do to achieve great cutscenes that are not possible in a 2D PMD game. Judging from what Spike Chunsoft has been developing lately, the last Mystery Dungeon game they made was actually made for Windows and it was in 2D. Wouldn't it be nice if they could also return to the Shiren the Wander series again and make a 3D Shiren the Wanderer game? After all, localisations of earlier of those games are being made and ported to platforms such as the PSVita. But Spike Chunsoft is not in charge of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, The Pokémon Company is though. So it will be up to The Pokémon Company's President to collaborate with Spike Chunsoft to work on making another PMD game.

For the next Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, please make it become a real adventuring game with it's dungeon crawling mechanics and also have actual humans appearing in the game as well, not just Pokémon. And please keep it in 3D.

  • I really like PMD, especially Explorers of Sky... So I really hope they continue the series personally. The sale chart was interesting. My least favorite was Gates To Infinity.

  • I believe there will be one but only after the first mainseries Pokemon games for the Switch have released. There was a 3-year gap between the release of GTI and SMD so it's not unusual for there to be a few years between each release.

  • If they do... they need to do several things for the next one:

    1. SEVERE difficulty nerf. SMD was WAY TOO RIDICULOUSLY HARD. It was pretty much the Pokemon version of Persona 3 FES 'The Answer' in terms of difficulty. Which is NOT GOOD AND NOT WANTED. At all.

    2. Stop stealing stuff from other genre's. SMD pretty much had stuff stolen from Digimon (Digivolving when it came to the MC and partner) and Persona (school and walking home with classmates. Hell, I was half-expecting to start forming Social Links o_O )

I actually kind of have an idea for the next one. To make it unique, different, and possibly 'good' again.

Have the MC and the partner be found by a group of thieves, bad guys, and/or villains. Not the main villains of the game but just a badder group of Pokemon. They get saved by them and eventually they join their bad group. Maybe led by Midnight Lycanroc? Then you go around actually stealing from Pokemon and attacking them in dungeons or whatever.

Eventually... it gets to the point where the MC and the partner has their own wanted posters, similar to the group they joined. Which eventually leads to the MC, partner, and the group they joined being confronted by and/or cornered by the Rescue Team/Squad/Expedition Society/whatever of the game. Possibly led by Type: Null and/or Silvally?

Then... the MC and partner get captured because their so-called 'allies' leave them high and dry. You go through the rest of the game in a sort of 'house arrest' type deal where you go back to rescuing Pokemon, escorting pokemon, fighting criminals etc. in a sort of 'redemption' type deal.

This would eventually and gradually change the MC and partner to be good and then lead to whatever the crisis is and the main villains of the game (possibly Ultra Beast related) with the eventual 'reuniting' of the MC and partner with their so-called 'allies' where they sort of get revenge on them and the group they joined is caught for good. There could even be a interesting part where one of the members of the group they joined actually finds them and says they are 'rescuing' them but the MC and partner deny them saying they were left high and dry and the group member is ran off.

I don't know. I guess I'm just the type of person who think it would be interesting for the MD series to have the MC and partner actually be the bad guys. At least for awhile.

    It's just an idea anyway.

  • I honestly can't see another Pokemon Mystery Dungeon in the foreseeable future. Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon really felt like the last push for these spin-off games. Honestly, generation seven hasn't had any spinoff games, except Pokemon Quest, and the Switch Pokken Tournament game. (Detective Pikachu is gen six spinoff) I want to believe another Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game could happen, but I'm pretty uncertain at this point....

  • Looking at the chart, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the people who started with gates were scared off thinking that super would be the same thing. It's a pity though how low they have been selling; ending the series wouldn't be a surprise sadly IMO
