Capes
Rated M | GM'd by Ice & gimmepie | Character Information | IC

Introduction
It's been over thirty years since the first parahumans, colloquially known as capes, appeared and since then the world has changed greatly. With superpowered people thrown into the mix, both crime and law enforcement reached new extremes. This is the world you will step into.

This isn't your typical superhero roleplay however. Capes, being based on John McCrae/wildbow's Worm, is a darker, grittier take on the genre injecting a dose of realism. There's no quirky villains with zany plans or ridiculously pure, loony heroes here. Villains take part in more traditional criminal activity; they're dealers, thieves and killers and heroes are either law enforcement or vigilantes skirting the edges of what is legally acceptable.

This is a sandbox RP. You're free to explore the setting, interact and create characters at your leisure for the most part and can create your own stories during the RP. However, there may occasionally be times where one of us introduce plot elements that may affect the RP at large.

Capes
Parahumans can possess a wide range of different powers, although most will have a power or power set with a specific sort of focus. In addition to that, most powers are bound by a strange effect that causes them to affect only organic material or only inorganic material. Few possess a power than works on both. Parahuman abilities can be classed into several categories with all abilities fitting into one or more of the following classes.

  • Mover - A mover is a cape with a power enhancing their mobility. Think Speedsters or Teleporters.
  • Shaker - Shakers are capes with powers that have an area of effect. Think manipulation of the terrain or barriers.
  • Brute - Brutes are capes with enhanced strength or durability. This one's pretty self-explanatory.
  • Breaker - A breaker is a cape that can shift into another state. For example, the ability to become water or smoke.
  • Master - A master can control or create minions. Mind control or controlling bugs, for example.
  • Tinker - Tinkers can create various devices and gadgets with futuristic technology.
  • Blaster - Blasters are those with ranged, offensive abilities. Lasers or pyrokinesis, for example.
  • Thinker - Thinkers have powers based on gathering information such precognitive powers or a superpowered intuition.
  • Striker - Strikers have powers that are based on touched or have a melee range.
  • Changer - Changers have powers altering their form or appearance such as shapeshifters.
  • Trump -Trump capes can manipulate powers to some capacity.
  • Stranger - Strangers have powers based on stealth or infiltration such as invisibility or perception filters.

All capes develop their powers in what is known as a trigger event. A trigger event is a time of extreme suffering or distress. Powers will often have a connection to the event that causes them to manifest with those who suffer physically usually developing physical powers and those that suffer mentally usually developing mental powers. A power's main priority when appearing is adapting in a way to sustain it's host. A power can be detrimental, but will never be fatal to the person who wields it. Capes can have second trigger events, but these are extremely rare. More about these will be in the optional reading post, for if you wanna dive into that sinkhole.

Fallcliff
This RP is set in the city of Fallcliff, a large and extremely multicultural city with one of the highest cape populations in the country. Fallcliff gets its name due to the large cliff that divides the city in two with the majority of the city sitting on the lower half whilst the upper section is primarily home to wealthy families, parks and large properties. Those who live on the lower half are generally much poorer and live in either apartments or small homes.

Fallcliff has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and wet, rainy/snowy winters. From most parts of Fallcliff, mountains including dormant volcanoes can be seen in the distance a large volcanic event responsible for the city's interesting geography. Due to the volcanic nature of the area, there are many farms around the outskirts of the city whilst the interior is primarily industrial in nature. Amongst the farmland the sturdy structure of the Fallcliff Detention Centre can be seen.

Heroes
Heroes in the Wormverse are typically members of the Protectorate or the Wards. The Protectorate is a government parahuman organisation tasked primarily with dealing with parahuman crime although they will respond to mundane criminal activity also. The Wards are their junior division for heroes under the age of eighteen and have similar responsibilities, although they are heavily supervised. Both groups are overseen by the Parahuman Response Team (PRT), a non-cape police organisation tasked with responding to parahuman threats and their fallout.

Most cities have a Protectorate and Wards and/or PRT division with a Protectorate Leader, Wards Leader and PRT Director. However, the Protectorate as an organisation is lead by a group of three heroes known as the Triumvirate. The final step up in the chain of command for both the Protectorate and PRT is the Chief Director.

Not all heroes are a part of this organisation. Some are members of small privately funded teams whilst others prefer to act as lone vigilantes. These individuals are not very common however.

Villains
In the Wormverse, villain just means "criminal who happens to be a cape" and as such there tends to be a lot less organisation amongst them. Villains will typically work solo or in smaller teams although many larger gangs or criminal organisations also have a core group of capes that call the shots. In this RP there are three large criminal organisations to consider;

  • La Fenice - An organised crime group with connections to the mafia. They're active in all sorts of illicit activity such as the drug trade, extortion and murder. They hold territory from New Rome down through the Historical Heart.
  • Fundation - Fundation are a street gang consisting primarily of the young and underprivileged. They belief Fallcliff only functions because of its crime economy and that crime is really the only way for most people to get by. They're active primarily around the University and Abandoned Industry districts.
  • Darwin's Chosen - A small but extremely violent and dangerous group that believe in Cape superiority. They make it their mission to hurt, kill and/or enslave ordinary people. They don't hold territory and exist more through loose connections than anything.

Villains in Fallcliff are typically locked up in the large Fallcliff detention centre which has thorough precautions against parahuman prisoners and jailbreakers and is staffed by PRT members. The worst offenders however are locked away in the far-off and mysterious Birdcage never to be seen again.

Rogues
Rogues are the the third alignment capes fall under. They are neither heroes nor villains, but use their powers commercially in order to provide a service or to otherwise further their career. Rogues are an extremely rare breed of parahuman and rarely manage to avoid getting mixed up with either the Protectorate or a criminal organisation for long.

Endbringers
The fourth and final group that have a large effect on the world are Endbringers. The Endbringers are not human beings and do not align with any human organisation. They are large, monstrous beings - forces of destruction that routinely lay waste to areas where lots of people congregate. There are three known Endbringers and once every three months, one will appear and lay siege to a city or similar somewhere in the world. The endbringers are as follows:

  • War - War is the largest, bulkiest of the Endbringers. He is capable of walking on all fours, or standing on his hind legs reaching about 45 feet tall. His thick red-brown skin is covered in numerous bony growths and his face is masked with a helmet of bone that ends in a mane of spiny protrusions. He produces several fleshy pods from beneath the bony armour that covers his exterior, launching them like missiles. Within each pod is one or two smaller creatures catered to the fight. Preferring to let his minions do most of the work, War mostly stays back releasing several volleys of the pods throughout a battle although each one takes time to make.
  • Famine - Famine stands about 35 feet tall and is bipedal. He resembles a yellow-green straw man, seeming to be made of numerous, thick intertwining cords in a vaguely humanoid shape. He has no mouth but a single, glowing red eye can be seen from beneath the chords of his head. From within his arm three sharp, unmoving obsidian claws protrude. Within a range of about 150 feet, powers gradually get weaker around Famine with the effect becoming stronger the closer to the Endbringer you get. Famine has been known to strike out with the powers it has been sapping.
  • Pestilence - Pestilence is the smallest of the Endbringers standing at only 15 or so feet tall and is far less bulky, she's also considered the scariest. She has a feminine, metallic body but no discernible features and moves extremely quietly and quickly. She can cause anything she touches to begin dissolving. Pestilence is considered the scariest of the Endbringers because during each battle she dissolves and absorbs some of the defending capes, using them to create plagues based on their powers that are then released during her next appearance.

Atm, I'm limiting my activity on this site in-particular, but this is definitely a fantastic set-up for a roleplay and one I'm especially appreciative of. The concept of a "superhero", in-reality, is impossible; a man or woman simply cannot be considered virtuous while still indulging in frequent bouts of violence, using his or her unnatural proficiencies to put his or herself on a higher plane of authority than actual law enforcement. It's really cool to see a roleplay acknowledge this somewhat. (Does that make Capes a foil to Titans then, lol?)

I haven't heard of "Worm" but I definitely plan to look into it now and I might check in on this from time to time. Good luck with it!

The Parahumans Database

This post is the Parahumans database, presenting all the data you need on all the characters you wanna know about. Bullet-points of any notable NPC character will be posted here. Anything attached to these bullet points is canon for those characters.

This database will be kept up-to-date throughout the RP, and will try to include everything there is to know about any NPC character mentioned.

We encourage the players to make information on characters they've name-dropped, used, or mentioned in their posts/SUs available here. Characters in this list are public NPCs, meaning anyone can use them in their posts, unless specified otherwise. Feel free to incorporate any character into a backstory, though. Characters can get new information or backstory added by other players. Feel free to fill in blanks in a characters history if you're using them.

I'm pretty hyped for this so here's my SUs lol. I might have raided GreyBidoof's Titans folders for faceclaims.

Hostage
AKA. Sebastian Medina

Age: 21
Sex: Male
Alignment: Villain

Appearance: Sebastian is a 6'2" tall Hispanic man. He has a thin build but has become solid over years of physical activity, first as an athlete and later through criminal activity. He's been described as handsome or as something of a pretty boy having defined, angular features and dazzling green eyes. When out of costume his straight, mid-length dark hair is usually slicked back. He's always clean shaven.

When out of costume, Sebastian likes to be well dressed. Even in warm weather he'll don a pair of brown or black trousers and a white dress shirt that he will always wear with the top button or two undone. In colder weather he'll don a thick matching coat. Sebastian can usually be seen with a simple gold chain around his neck. Both of his ears a pierced with simple gold studs.

In costume, as Hostage, Sebastian's appearance is much more daunting. He wears a black bodysuit covered in heavy-duty black and grey body armour and a vaguely skull-shaped helmet with dark yellow lenses. As Hostage he carries a pair katana-esque swords that he went to a great deal of pain to learn to use.

Personality: Upon first meeting Sebastian, you'd never guess he was a supervillain. He generally displays a jovial, carefree and sarcastic attitude. He'll make a lot of jokes and snide remarks and tends to be rather flirtatious. He can even be rather arrogant on occasion, aware that he's both witty and quite attractive and willing to use those things to his advantage.

If you got to know him more however, you might learn that there's darker elements to his personality. Sebastian is something of an adrenaline junky and has self-destructive tendencies, not placing much value on his safety or the safety of others. He's something of a nihilist who sees very little good in the world and he has little desire to play by the rules of a society where authority figures can break those rules without repercussions. He does have a caring side, but he tries to keep it buried because attachment is terrifying to him.

Power(s): Hostage was "blessed" with the rather unfortunate power of attracting projectile towards himself. That's why he wears such heavy duty body armour and was forced to learn to fight with melee weapons. He is classified as a Shaker.

History and Trigger Event: Sebastian grew up in a fairly wealthy family in San Antonio, Texas. His father was a prosecutor and earned a fair bit of money whilst his mother worked part time as a Spanish tutor. He and his younger brother lived a life of relative luxury, able to invest time and effort into just about any hobby deemed acceptable by both parents with the only real concession being that they still had to attend church.

In Sebastian's case, he took up athletics. Over the years he became quite skilled in various events, although he was never number one, but more importantly to him he made several friends and grew to be fairly popular. His active social life was encouraged so long as he was able to maintain acceptable levels of success academically and athletically, which he could. Nothing was a worry until he started getting a bit too close to one of his athletics buddies.

As it turned out, his friend was gay. Surprisingly enough, Sebastian worked out he was too. Since the two were already close they ended up getting into a relationship, which the closeted pair kept tight-lipped about. They managed to keep it up for close to a year before Sebastian's strict, conservative father walked in on them and proceeded to beat Sebastian's boyfriend to the point that he would later fall into a coma whilst Sebastian was frozen with terror. Sebastian triggered as the beating went on, attempting to hurl something at his father's head only to have it come hurtling back at him. Nobody even noticed.

Sebastian's father was taken to court but got off with no charge thanks to his many connections and his victim being too comatose to testify. Sebastian fled home and hitchhiked from city to city, surviving through crime and trying desperately to avoid anything flying through the air. He would later come into contact with Jailer who befriended him and helped provide him with the much needed body armour and melee training he required.

The pair later struck out on their own some time later, moving to Fallcliff.

Jailer
AKA. Anita Blaine

Age: 20
Sex: Female
Alignment: Villain

Appearance: Anita is fairly tall for a woman, standing at about 5'9" or 5'10" and has dark, tanned skin as a result of a mix of Arabian, Mediterranean, African and Caucasian heritage. She's got at least a little of almost everything. Her build is slender and toned and her facial features are square-ish in shape. Her hair is shoulder length, black and straight and her eyes are a vivid blue which stands in stark contrast to her skintone.

Out of costume, Anita prefers to wears simple casual clothes. In warmer weather she'll usually be seen in dark-colored ¾ length pants or longer shorts and a simple earthy-colored t-shirt. In winter she's liable to go for cargos and a thick jacket or parker in a similar colour scheme. She almost never dresses to accentuate her figure and is almost never seen wearing jewelry.

Unlike her streetwear, Anita's cape costume is quite feminine. As Jailer she wears a primarily black armoured bodysuit with pink accents on her legs and along the sides of her chest. A short green triangle section points down from her neck, matching the green utility belt around her waist. Attached to her costume is a cape that splits into four distinct, rounded sections. She conceal her identity with a matching pink helmet dominated by a strong, red visor.

Personality: Anita is a calm and relaxed person who is hard to phase and finds the antics of those less composed than herself highly amusing. She acts friendly towards most people and is extremely loyal, looking out for those close to her. Despite these warm traits however she can be cold and fierce when angry and his happy to admonish the folly of others. This dichotomy has even lead to her being called motherly on occasion.

To most, she wouldn't seem like the type to be active in villainy. She certainly has little desire to hurt people. Over the years however she's come to believe that there's no hope for her to live a non-criminal life as villainy is all she knows and she doesn't trust the system to work for her. She feels the only difference between a hero and a villain is that heroes have government permission to ruin lives and receive a paycheck.

Power(s): Anita has the ability to create near invisible force fields around other people and objects. They aren't unbreakable, but are extremely durable. She can manipulate the size and shape of her force fields and move them around but she cannot place one around herself. Her force fields must be a complete 3D shape. Anita is considered primarily a Shaker but her power also has Mover and Blaster applications.

History and Trigger Event: Anita didn't turn to crime like Sebastian, she was born into it. The child of a prostitute that "belonged" to her crime lord father, a low-level thinker. She grew up surrounded by the illicit and originally she longed to escape it. For the most part she was safe despite her father's occupation, but safety isn't permanent.

As she got older, her father's criminal enterprises expanded more and more, eventually attracting greater heat from police and, as more capes fell under her father's employ, the protectorate. At the age of ten, her father decided to take her and her mother with him to be a part of a mysterious "deal". She was thrilled because she rarely got to see her mother. Unfortunately for her however, the deal turned out to be a local but high-ranking hero buying both her and her mother from her father in exchange for him looking the other way to her father's criminal activity. Another hero arrived on the scene and in the ensuing chaos the new arrival, several of her father's men and her mother ended up dead. She triggered, instinctively shielding her father from harm for reasons she still cannot really fathom. The corrupt hero fled the scene as he felt he'd attracted too much attention.

Anita spent the next several years of her life under her father's employ, her power being used to his advantage in exchange for her having access to greater comforts. It was during this time that she met Hostage, recruiting him to her father's employ to get him off the street. The pair worked together for the crime lord who provided them with training and equipment and an uneasy peace settled over their daily lived… as peaceful as being a supervillain gets anyway.

This too didn't last however as Hostage's ability inadvertently caused the pair to botch a job. As a result Anita's father decided Sebastian was a liability and ordered her to kill him. Unwilling to off her closest friend, she elected to flee with him, the pair eventually setting themselves up in Fallcliff.

Calvin Nanyemba A.K.A. Animator

26 / Male/ Hero

Appearance: If you're looking for a superhero physique, you've found it with Calvin. Tall, muscular and a jawline that would not cut steel but probably would cut butter. Calvin is of Namibian descent, his ethnicity being the only visible remnant of it. His extremely curly hair is kept short, being longer on top as it fades down the sides.

Calvin usually dresses in a plaid shirt and a nice pair of pants, if he's going through his regular life. For more formal events, he might wear a suit beige suit. Clothing isn't something Calving pays much attention to. The variety in dress is low, to the point where he doesn't even own enough clothing to wear something different for each day of the week.

Calvin's uniform is utilitarian, being a thick layer of kevlar that's sprayed white with light blue accents on the edges. His face is covered by a white mask that covers his eyes and most of his nose. Over his eyes two small glowing crescents are placed, to make it seem as if he's always smiling.

Personality: Calvin's defining characteristic is doubt. He's conflicted about a lot of stuff, and even after endless nights of deliberation, he has yet to make up his mind about most of it.

The only thing he knows for sure is that he wants to help people. As much as people have let him down, he continues to see people acting outside of their best interest to help others. He looks up to these people, and aspires to be like them. It's in him to everything he can to help, and be as selfless as possible. Most of that was instilled in him by his parents, but the belief is only strengthened by his own experiences.

What Calvin isn't yet sure about his how he fits in the hierarchy at the Protectorate. He enjoys the tools they provide him, and the legitimacy the organization offers, but he feels like their rules and regulations limit his ability to help. He doesn't have a single blemish on his record, and knows the rules by heart. Questioning them is something he does regularly, though. At the moment, Calving is convinced that operating within the Protectorate is the best thing he can do, as he doubts people would still see him as a hero once he starts acting outside the law.

While he was born and raised in America, his parents were immigrants from a ruined state. Calvin struggles with his cultural identity, as he feels he isn't American enough to fit in with society, but he's very unfamiliar with his Namibian roots. His parents raised him with in English, but he remembers them arguing in Oshiwambo when they think he wasn't around. The words, even without any meaning to attach to them, linger in his mind as a reminder of him being out of place. Even at school, Calvin felt out of place, never allowed to really fit in. He had grown up in a very white neighborhood in a small town in Kansas, and while people were accepting, he couldn't help but feel like he was standing out. The way Calvin sees it, he's nothing, culturally. He's not American, just an immigrant, but he's neither Namibian, as the country is completely estranged from him.

Even sexuality is something Calvin struggles with, having found a preference for either gender of partner, being equally attracted and disgusted by either option.

In the field, Calvin's doubt can still take the better of him, making him struggle to do the right thing. If multiple options present themselves, he has a hard time to figure out which one is the right one.

Calvin doesn't try to show his doubt, though, generally coming over as a steady and collected character. He tries to keep his personal opinions out of his work as Animator, and is sure to not let it interfere in his work relationships.

It isn't rare that people come for advice about their personal life to Calvin. As his conviction is to help people, it transfers to their personal matters. He tries to always help someone out of their personal peril, even though he might struggle with similar problems. He's very much better at giving advice than taking it.

Power(s): Calvin is a cape who's abilities make allow him to have a multitude of different classifications. The official PRT files call him a Master primarily, with a big Breaker component, and smaller aspects of the Mover and Trump classifications.

His abilities make him reshape inorganic matter, and animate it, allowing it to move independently. There's a limited amount of matter that can be put into one beast, as he calls them. These beasts will reshape themselves to vaguely resembles animals, and if left to their own devices, will even take on behavioral aspects of them.

Calvin has a strong control over his beasts, although they have some quirks that he instills into them unconsciously that he's unable to control. These quirks tend to be based on his mindset and personal feelings at the moment of animation.

The beasts are mainly used for attacking, but allow for some variety in use. Calvin generally rides his beasts for transport, and can use them to clean up disaster areas.

The material of the construct dictates its properties. A steel construct will be stronger than a cloth one, for example, but a cloth one will be much softer. They don't gain any new properties despite the ability to move. For any extra-ordinary abilities, they must be instilled into the material already.

There's a limit as to how many beasts Calvin can control. To be able to keep them all energized and active, he can't have more than three. If he goes beyond that, both his ability to keep them active and to control them will diminish.

History and Trigger Event: Calvin was born in America, in a small town in Kansas, only moving to Fallcliff when he was twenty years old. His parents hail from Namibia (Although it was still part of South Africa at that time), and are refugees from an area destroyed in an attack by the Endbringer Pestilence. Both doing relatively well, especially for black workers growing up during the apartheid. They were extremely grateful for their treatment and wealth in their home country, and took that humility with them to the states. They still live in Kansas, and are active parts of local politics, and lead a charity which aims to help black families in Namibia.

Calvin triggered when he was 19, as a car accident seemed inevitable. A drunk driver overtook Calvin in the middle of the night, and graced the nose of his car, making him lose control of his vehicle. The speed at which he was driving, the darkness and his inexperience with motor vehicles made it an adrenaline-filled event he was not going to forget. He triggered moments before he recovered his car and avoided any actual damage to either himself or the other driver. To this day, he sees it as a wonder, and maybe even divine intervention, that nobody even got hurt in the event. The car is still with his parents, the dents and scratches in the paint never repaired. His father bitterly jokes about donating it to a museum once Calvin inevitably dies on duty.

Only a week after figuring out his abilities, Calvin went to the local protectorate to sign up. Accepted quickly, and integrated in the system, he almost gave up on the cape-life as a group of white supremacist supervillains started to base themselves in his town. Often the target of their attacks and slander, Calvin broke under the pressure, and requested relocation to Fallcliff.

For almost two years now, Calvin has been living in Fallcliff, serving in their protectorate, which houses three times the amount of capes his Kansas branch did. Calvin's cover is his day job in the financial district for a company called Orange & Klaassen Law, a company who's main goal is to supply capes with a jobs to support their civilian identity, besides offering judicial help to Protectorate capes, and potential new allies.

Calvin works long hours, as he's one of the more popular heroes to send out for school visits, recruitment, and tv-interviews. He's part of a smaller group within the protectorate called the PR capes, which are suited well for keeping the masses invested. These capes are mainly heroes with abilities that aren't just useful in combat, but also have some entertainment value.

Calvin currently lives in an old house that probably doesn't abide to the safety regulations anymore in the historical heart of the city. Recently he's been spending most of his time over at his current girlfriend's house, a camera-operator at a local morning show.

We generally covered that abilities will usually either affect only the biological or only the inorganic but will almost never effect both. The Manton-effect is definitely in play and we'll vet abilities accordingly if we need to but we didn't want to get into the real specifics of it.

I specified mind control and body control are different things, no complaining. :P

Her dressing is very convincing and real, for her main priority is seamlessly blending into society without having to out her gender identity and invite possibility for persecution and discrimination. Her dresses are more modest, with modern minimalism and whatever is perfect for Fallcliff's current clime.

Her costume is designed after a bird, huge surprise there, I know. And she dons a feathered mask with a beak to complete the full illusion. The wings are there for fashion and they don't actually confer her the ability of flight. Sorry, she ain't a Tinker.

Personality:
Lyra has always felt displaced and dissociated. In society, within her physical body, she finds identity in her lack of one. She wears masks to confront reality, taking on different personas in different situations. Fluid, her personality is. A wildcard when it comes to issues such as morality. Sometimes she thinks for only herself, sometimes she acts selflessly and is empathetic. Many a times has she behaved and acted entirely contradictory to how she truly feels and thinks. As Songbird, her chaotic neutrality makes her a threat to both heroes and villains. But even Songbird is just an idea and a facet of her real personality–if she even has one.

Lyra suffers from social anxiety and is extremely self-conscious which leads her to seem vain to others. She isn't fond of disclosing her private life, neither does she have many friends that are close enough for her to feel secure and comfortable in opening up. Over the years of growing and learning from the school of hard knocks, Lyra has learned to channel her inner struggles into creative energies. Music found her and became the outlet for her mind and self; it was the piano who told her she had a soul. One could say that no one knows her like the piano does.

Outside cape activities, Lyra is a singer (though not very well known given that she only mixes around in the underground indie scene) and a voice actress and a regular performer in the LGBTQ+ club circuit.

Power(s):
Any sound Songbird has heard, she can reproduce vocally with the same accuracy and realism. An old man's voice, the telephone ringing, a machine gun firing, coins dropping against a metal surface, nails driving across a chalkboard. Anything. If she can hear it, she can "sing" it. She's classified as a Stranger.

History and Trigger Event:
Due to being an extremely effeminate boy, Lyra has always been the target of bullying in school. When she was thirteen, her first voice cracks came at the most unfortunate timing when she was called upon to recite a Twelfth Night passage in English class. Everyone in class broke out in laughter from hearing the sissy lady-boy voice morph into a deep manly one for a second. Utterly humiliated and on the verge of having an anxiety attack, Lyra triggered and her voice suddenly took on a very mature ladylike voice. She kept on going, determined to get through the passage from her favourite Shakespearean play, weaving such a storyteller's voice that left everyone in the room stunned and speechless.

As Songbird, Lyra is one of the lesser known capers, due to her rendering her services to the seedy criminal underworld. Some of the "jobs" she has involved herself with villains were to distract heroes by sounding like a damsel in distress, pretending to be the kidnapped child of a wealthy CEO, as well as giving a really salacious and raunchy performance with her larynx to get a gang of really pent-up villains off. However, she has also offered her services to local heroes, although they're mostly her sounding like a Mother Goose to assist in peaceful evacuation of civilians (it gets really boring after the tenth job). Songbird prefers to stay out of the larger caper organizations, keeping a low profile and fly (pun intended) under the radar. Unfortunately, things don't always go the way we all want, don't they?

-Songbird-

Winter's Songbird has been accepted

This looks like a very interesting RP to join. Since I have an have an interest in superheroes, I might come up with a hero or villain. Course I am not very familiar with Worm at all.

No knowledge about Worm required! We don't wanna scare people off with requiring them to read a 1.7 million word story :p

Here is my sign up:

Name: Isaac Icicle

Cape Alias: Professor Avalanche

Age: 30

Sex: Male

Alignment (Hero/Villian/Rogue): Rogue

Appearance: Isaac's skin tone is a mix of Italian and English heritage. The most notable feature where his Italian side shows is in his hair. He stands at a height of 6'4" and weighs around 160 pounds.

When Isaac is in his civilian form, he wears plain blue shirts and dark blue pants. For formal occasions, he wears navy blue suits. When it comes to the summer months, he never wears shorts.

When Isaac is in his Professor Avalanche identity, he wears a light blue and white outfit with the symbol of an avalanche on the chest. Course the white part is a little bit darkened.

Personality: One thing that people tend to notice about his personality is that he is very serious when it comes to his work. Outside of his work, he has been known to be cold and calculating. Course when it comes to women, he can be quite witty and flirty at the same time. Even though he has done ice sculptures for the wedding receptions of people that are into same sex marriages, Isaac has never had any romantic interest in men.

Even before the event that had caused Isaac to get his powers, he was quite fond of skiing. When it comes to humor, he really does not have much of a sense of humor. After he had gained his powers, Isaac had become extremely pyrophobic. Seeing as he was born in Italy, Isaac is quite a fan of work done during the Renaissance.

When it comes to when people order ice sculptures from him, he gives them a guarantee that he will give a fine quality of work for a fair price. When he has completed a piece of work, he hopes that he does not have to redo it again since it might cause him to get stressed out. Course he does not like it when people insult or destroy his sculptures. As a sculptor, Isaac considers his works to being the closest to ever having children of his own. When it comes to his religious views, he happens to be a devout Roman Catholic.

Power(s): Isaac has the power to shape and control ice without using tools at times.

History and Trigger Event: Isaac was born in the Province of Sondrio, Lombardy Region, Italy, to an English father and an Italian mother. During his years at school, it was noticed that he was quite skilled at making sculptures out of ice. When he graduated from college, he decided to become a professional ice sculptor. He has a degree in sculpture

One day when he was taking a skiing trip in the Valchiavennian Region of the Alps, he was caught in a fierce avalanche. When he later woke up in a hospital, the doctors told him that he was lucky to be alive after what had happened to him. After he left the hospital, someone threw a block of ice at him. As he threw up his hands to protect himself, the block of ice started to change its shape. He then realized that he was causing it to change shape without actually touching it.

After that incident, that he decided that it was time to use his powers for continuing making ice sculptures. He later decided to start calling himself Professor Avalanche, seeing as it was an avalanche that had caused him to get his powers in the first place. Course he knew he had to leave Italy so that he would not be noticed by the Mafia.

When he arrived in Fallcliff two years ago, he set up an ice sculptor's business to provide ice sculptures for formal occasions. Both the heroes and villains have called on his services before.

EDIT: Complete (I think)

Edan Edgeworth AKA Brimstone
34451a2bb172bcd3a77339f12c4647d2.jpg

Name: Edan Edgeworth
Cape Alias: Brimstone
Age: 20
Sex: Male
Alignment: Villain
Appearance:
Ordinarily, Edan is a cute looking young man somehow managing to acquire both the perfect bone structure and body shape of his father, and the soft features of his mother.
His fiery red hair was also a gift from his mother, a genetic tendency in her side of the family.
His yellow-brown eyes were a gift from his father, a trait that is rumored to be given to those who will do something great with their lives.
His attire leaves much to be desired, Even before the incident he was never far from his navy blue trench coat which he had received from his father, and now he has an odd fondness very the soot stained clothes he had worn that night. Other articles of interest are his riding gear that he wears when on his motorcycle.

Super-Outfit:
Taking inspiration from many tribal outfits, the outfit of "Brimstone" consists of many layers of cloth on-top of each other with blackened wooden plates guarding certain aspects of his form. Beneath a hood is a clay mask that has been expertly painted to look like a cracked and ashen volcanic landscape.
skywind___ash_mask_concept_by_natterforme-d8axem4.jpg

Personality:
Edan is a criminal and he knows it. He mainly does it to support his habits, and unlike many of his fellow members of the Tungsten Brotherhood however, his habits aren't whores and drugs as much as they are… computer games and comic books. So why then, you ask would he devote his life to crime? Simply because that was what he was good at. He could never find it in himself to care beyond that.
Edan is intelligent. Not super intelligent, but he was always able to maintain a B grade without much issue in class, and even in the single year of college he took before he triggered. He was simply never the kind of guy who had goals beyond the here and now, and in the here and now you want what works the best the fastest. And for him, that was working for the Brotherhood.
He does have certain things he cares about however. He has a strong sense of family. Nobody messes with his family. If they did, they would find themselves at the bottom of a river with cinderblocks tied to their feet if they weren't extremely careful. This is especially true for his younger brother Damian. Even before his parents psuedo-death, Edan and Damian were close. But afterwards they became nigh inseparable for many months. Edan still checks in on Damian at least once everyday to ensure that his "Little Bro" is still okay.

Power(s): Ability to produce an almost infinite amount of thick black smoke from his lungs. He can breathe through this smoke with no problem, however he still can't see through the dark cloud which he produces. In addition, he has the ability to almost instantly turn any wood related product he touches to ash, the effect spreading rapidly like a wild fire. An entire tree could be reduced to dust in less than a minute.

History and Trigger Event:
Edan lived a decent life with his multicultural parents and his "baby" brother Edan. They moved to Fallcliff from Nottingham when Edan was four, shortly after his brothers first birthday. Now their family wasn't perfect. The Edgewood boys' father was a man who spent more time working than with his children, leaving their emotionally unstable mother to deal with the less than well-mannered children alone, without even her family to aide her as she had left her old life behind when she left Kyoto with a dashing younger version of the boy's father Samwell Edgeworth. However this unstable foundation naturally led to Edan (and later Damian as well) falling into the hands of one of Fallcliffs less than reputable groups of individuals… The Tungsten Brotherhood. This "family" served to patch the hole in Edan's life. They helped him and in return, he did odd jobs for them. He didn't care if those jobs weren't exactly morally correct, he was a morally grey person. This was all well and good until about a year ago. Edan was on break from college and it just so happened that one of the brotherhoods rival gangs, Los Diablos, happened to set their house ablaze. Trapped inside the fiery inferno Edan rushed to find his younger brother, and when he did he carried the younger boy out of the house. Shortly thereafter the fire was quelled thanks to the aide of Fallcliffs fire fighters, however not before leaving both Samwell and Eiko both comatose and hospitalized, and triggering both of the boys as they would soon find out. The boys took a few months to recover, their contacts in the Brotherhood putting them up in a place until they were back on their feet and semi functional again. Even once they recovered, both boys remained together without question both in an attempt to hold onto what they once had and to understand the new powers that that had been thrust into their lives.

Maryam Shirazi || Bombshell

Female // 16 // Ward

IpelICJ.png

Appearance

Maryam is a teenage Persian girl with soft facial features. She's on the short side, and is quite a beauty (as her cape name implies). She dyes her hair blonde, and tends to wear it up over loose. She dresses tomboyish outside of her costume, preferring baseball caps, baggy shirts, and jeans.

Her costume consists of a large winter coat, reinforced a little to withstand impact, and baggy pants. She carries several bandoliers of her grenade inventions, organized in a way only she knows which one she is using. Her mask is an old full head gas mask, muffling her voice significantly but still obviously feminine. Her grenade launcher is of her own design, and emphasizes simplicity over the elaborate designs of other tinker tools.

Personality

Maryam is the more practical of the siblings, but not a full blown pessimist. She's often the one to point out flaws in plans, although she detests leadership positions. She has a little bit of a hot blooded side to her, favoring action over inaction. She rarely builds stuff for other people (her brother the only running exception), feeling it bringer her closer to being a design tinker who never does any field work.

Like her brother, she tends to crack some jokes during battle. However, hers tend to be more sarcastic and less awful puns.

Outside of work, she has a passing interest in capes, but not nearly at the level of her brother. Her main interests tend to be scoping out new resturants, cute animals, and playing games. Some would call her a little stuck up from time to time, probably the result of being slightly pampered by Reza. She does have good intentions under the complaints, however, and is a reliable friend.

Power

Limit Tinker

Bombshell specializes in condensing technology into grenade sized projectiles, which can be thrown or launched. She built her grenade launcher herself, as well as did the reinforcement of her and Reza's armor herself. Her primary use for the grenades are to restrain suspects. Her most direct methods of restraint involve Containment Foam, electrified wires, reinforced nets, and occasionally bolos. She also packs one or two normal explosive and smoke/gas rounds, but finds them uncreative.

Some of her more unique technology involves grenades that release loud screeches, unfold to dummy targets. or unfold into portable cover.

It seems she also gained some form of enhanced aim. While not infallible, she is more accurate than the average person with lobbed projectiles. She appears able to account for factors such as gravity almost instantly, without the need for calculation.

History and Trigger Event

Maryam is a true blooded american girl, both in culture and birth. She's lived in Fallcliff since her birth, and feel no connection to her parents country. Growing up, she was inseparable from her brother, a small girl completely different from everyone else. Although her early years in school were rough, she eventually found her place in middle school (puberty most likely helping with that), and was one of the more popular girls.

Although she slowly began drifting to her new friends, she never fully abandoned her brother. The days of pouring over capes every night faded away, but they still spent a fair amount of time together. Her growing comfort with American culture and abandonment of her parent's Iranian lifestyle began to cause conflict, finding discomfort with her manner of dress and dying her hair. Reza sticking up for her during these arguments is one of the big reasons the two remain close.

She triggered the same day Reza did, the accumulation of her failing relationship with her parents and her brother's incredibly stupid, but still selfless actions. After she found herself safe, she began to realize how much explosive devices just made sense. She created her initial prototypes in an abandoned house while her brother practiced his gravity control. Once they had a firm grasp on their powers, they revealed their secret to their parents and fought to join the Wards.

Now she lives completely away from her parents with the Wards. She eagerly awaits the day she can graduate and become a full fledged hero.

Reza Shirazi || Freefall

Male // 18 // Hero

3plWxBC.png

Appearance

Reza is a Persian man with strong features and a slim, but athletic, build and a little on the shorter side. He has thick, black hair that is often unruly from his habits of wearing hats, as well as his costume's helmet. He has a short, well manicured beard that causes him to look older than he actually is. Outside of PRT duty he mostly sticks to wearing casual streetwear: hoodies, knit caps, jeans, sweat pants.

His Freefall costume, however, is the focus of his design efforts. The bulk of it is lightweight material, so as to not slow down his own gravity with excess mass. Metal plating covers a few sensitive areas and his limbs in case of impact. His combat vest was a find at a surplus military store, that he later upgraded with the help of a tinker ally to make bullet and projectile resistant. The pouch contains several capture grenades of his sister's design to assist with apprehension. His last piece of gear is a large cricket bat, just in case.

Personality

Personality: Reza is a lighthearted optimist of a man. He's been a fan of capes ever since he was young, and has always dreamed of becoming one. He takes his duties as a cape seriously, and is a big proponent of the unsaid bond between heroes and villains. He detests villains who target civilians as well as heroes who push the PRT limits. He likes to crack awful jokes in combat and while on patrol, as well as ham it up for the crowds. He's one of the few heroes who actually loves PR work, seeing as a chance to reach out the the public. He also works with the Wards extensively, being a graduate from the program himself. He likes to bring along sidekicks when possible, especially his sister, whom he has a bit of an overbearing relationship with.

Outside of hero duties, most would see Reza as a chronically tired college student (part-time, at his parent's insistence). He enjoys music, although he himself cannot play an instrument or sing a tune to save his life. His interest in capes has also not died down, and he sometimes joins fan meetings outside of costume.

His relationship with his parents is a little strained, disapproving and a little fearful of capes after having to flee Iran, but they turn a blind eye to their children's work so long as they stay on the hero side.

Although he wants the squeaky clean hero life, he secretly desires a worthy, and beautiful rival with a strained on-again-off-again relationship. Just like many of his old comic heroes.

Power

Shaker 7, Mover 2

Freefall can manipulate the way gravity works on an object or area. He can change the direction and magnitude of gravity's effects, but cannot outright cancel it. The most basic use of this power is affecting the gravity of a specific object to cause it to fly in some other direction. By adjusting the magnitude of gravity on the object, he can cause the object to "fall" faster or slower. Lowering the magnitude to almost nothing allows an object to very slowly fall, almost to where it is floating.

This effect can be spread to an area, creating a "Gravity Bubble" where all the object that enter the bubble are equally effected by the same manipulation. Larger bubbles are much harder to create than smaller ones, and tend to not have as strong of an effect. Small, intense bubbles are his preferred method of area manipulation, sometimes as small as a human foot for throwing his foes off balance.

Freefall is also able to affect his own personal gravity, making himself both lighter and more mobile, all the way to pseudo-flight by adjusting his own gravitational pull's direction.

The main limit of his powers is how much mass it can affect. Trying to manipulate too much mass leads to "Blowback" effects, where he is prone to headaches, loss of senses, and other negative affects. The largest he has been able to move are in the range of an empty semi truck, suffering some medium blowback in the form of a migraine and blurred vision during the act. Serious blowbacks can lead to periods (usually several minutes) of blindness and deafness as his "brain resets" (in his own words). If too much mass enters a Gravity Bubble, the blowback isn't immediate; he has a few moments to pop the bubble before it fully impacts him.

History and Trigger Event

Reza's parents are immigrants to Fallcliff from Iran following the takeover of Tehran by the Villain group Babylon. Reza himself was two during the events, and his mother was already pregnant with his sister, Maryam, at the time. The Shirazi home was lost during the takeover, and at least one of Reza's uncles fell victim to Wretch and ended up a thrall.

Being young, Reza quickly adapted to American culture, where his parents struggled to adapt. As he grew up, both him and Maryam formed a close bond with one another, being the only Persian children in school, a bond the two keep to this day. Childhood hobbies came and went, but the only one that stuck for an extended amount of time was his interest in capes, much to his father's disappointment. He followed cape news closely, and most of his pocket money went to cape magazines, action figures, and other cape media.

As he grew up, he began to abandon the idea of being a parahuman, knowing his life was just too boring for a trigger event. That is, until him and Maryam were hanging out on the roof of their apartment complex and a rogue bomb from a cape fight exploded near them. The bomb was strong enough to crumble part of the roof, and Maryam lost her balance; plunging to the street below. Without even thinking he jumped after her, and as he wrapped his arms around her and came to his senses, he realized he was "floating" in mid air.

After many secret experiments and arguments with his parents, Reza and Maryam eventually got the grasp of their new powers and convince their parents enough to join the wards at the ages of 16 and 14. Freefall and Bombshell achieved minor popularity as a side kick duo, keeping their relatedness a secret for security reasons, but still wishing to work together. After two years, his high school graduation, and having been 18 for two months, Freefall finally graduated the Wards into the full Protectorate, where he has worked for two months. He currently lives alone and attends college part time as per the deal he made with his parents two years ago.

Here is my sign up:

Name: Isaac Icicle

Cape Alias: Professor Avalanche

Age: 30

Sex: Male

Alignment (Hero/Villian/Rogue): Rogue

Appearance: First off, whenever Isaac is in his costume or not, he always has a special refrigeration device plugged into his chest to keep his body temperature at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. He stands at a height of 6'4" and weighs around 160 pounds.

When Isaac is in his civilian form, he wears plain long shirts and dark blue pants.

When Isaac is in his Professor Avalanche identity, he wears a light blue and white outfit with the symbol of an avalanche on the chest. Course the white part is a little bit darkened.

Personality: Even though he is a parahuman, Isaac prefers to be called a "metahuman." One thing that people tend to notice about his personality is that he is very serious when it comes to his work. Outside of his work, he has been known to be cold and calculating. Course when it comes to women, he can be quite witty and flirty at the same time.

One day when he was taking a skiing trip in the Valchiavennian Region of the Alps, he was caught in a fierce avalanche. First off, I like the character concept! It's fun and has that campy charm that a lot of batman villains are famous for. I'm not sure how certain elements would translate to the current setting. Campiness is really fun, and I personally love it, but with how the this setting functions, a campy personality is fine, a campy character creates some small tonal differences.

The character's name being Icicle while he has ice powers is very on the nose, especially because Icicle isn't a common last name. It also makes me curious to his heritage, as Icicle is an English word, but the character is Italian.

The second thing that catches my eye might be on us the GMs for not really elaborating very well, but while powers can change some stuff about their host as it were, they generally aren't abilities that would kill them. So the chestfridge doesn't really blend incredibly well with the setting.

The last thing, and the one I personally would really prefer if you took out, is his preference for being called metahuman. Unless he has some good justification for prefering the term, 'parahuman', or 'cape' is what's the norm in this setting.

Also, if you have any questions about something we were unclear on in the OP, feel free to ask! gimmepie and I are happy to answer any questions!

Name: Lilith Griffin

Cape Alias: Cactus (because she doesn't like to get too close to people)

Age: 22

Sex: Female

Alignment (Hero/Villain/Rogue): Hero, Vigilante

Appearance: Both in and out of costume.
Outside of her costume, she is about 5' 2'', and weighs around 110 pounds. She has naturally light brown hair, but likes to dye it a wide range of colors. She doesn't really bother to style it more then that, letting it flow freely. Her face is mostly free of marks or blemishes, except for a subtle scar on her cheek. She is from the United Kingdom, and has light skin. Her eyes are blue, although she sometimes changes the colors using contacts.

As for clothing, she prefers to remain casual, wearing basic attire, and sometimes a skirt. When she needs to be fancier however, she will be, as she has fancy dresses.

Her suit is more complex, with many attachments that perform various operations, most notably, the wing attachments, which let her fly for a very short period of time. The suit itself is built for mobility and defense, but mostly mobility, as her power allows her to avoid fights most of the time. Attached to her armguards (and also other parts of the suit, which is why she chose the name cactus) are retractable blades, that not only function as weapons, but block a lot of damage from the side. The suit is mostly black, so in case her power fails, she can still blend in a bit. The suit also muffles almost all sounds that she makes.

Personality: She doesn't affiliate with any of the major groups, however she often runs into members trying to recruit her. She wants the world to be a better place, but feels that the Protectorate sets too many regulations, and she prefers to have more freedom. She is very secretive, and will hardly show her true self to anyone, preferring to remain unpredictable. This also means she really isn't interested in a relationship, or even making friends, although there are a select few people she would be friends with.

Power(s): Invisibility (So a stranger), and flying because of her suit. Her invisibility can be turned on and off, and can last as long as she is in full control of her body. If she falls asleep (or even just gets tired), gets under the influence of some substance, or even just flinches, it will turn off.

History and Trigger Event: When she was a bit younger, around 17, her parents wanted her to join the PRT, but she really had no interest, and eventually, their constant demands just got to be annoying. One day, her father told her that if she didn't join, they would take everything in her room away, and force her to sleep in the basement, with no luxuries. She got so annoyed, she decided to pack up her belongings, and run away. She was very worried that the police would catch her, and send her home, but she noticed that nobody around her noticed her at all. She was completely invisible. Soon, she became of legal age, and bought a small room with the money she earned from her job as an electronics repairer. At her job, she met another parahuman who happened to be a tinker. They became friends after a while, and he built her the suit she wears to this day, however, he was killed when a car crashed through the window of his shop. After the terrifying event, she went into seclusion, never revealing her true self to anyone else, and using the suit, as well as her own powers to help her. She began to notice members of other groups, both the Protectorate and villanous groups, trying to get her to join their sides, the although she never really wanted to interact with anyone in the groups.

Her flight gear, made by the tinker, is slowly breaking down, and requires constant repairs. She is searching for a way to keep it intact, although it isn't easy since she doesn't like interacting with people.

She doesn't interact with her parents at all anymore, and hasn't seen them since she ran away.

She began to notice members of other groups, both the Protectorate and villanous groups, trying to get her to join their sides, although she never wanted to interact with anyone in the groups.

Her flight gear, made by the tinker, is slowly breaking down, and requires constant repairs. She is searching for a way to keep it intact, although it isn't easy since she doesn't like interacting with people.

She doesn't interact with her parents at all anymore, and hasn't seen them since she ran away.

I really like the idea of being pressured to join the PRT causing her to trigger. Very cool character. Were her parents Heroes/PRT members?

Anyway, my issue here is mostly with her as a rogue. She can be a rogue, that's not the issue. However, what does she do for a living? Does she use her power to make (legal) money (the general thing Rogues do) or is she just a Rogue because she refuses to be either hero or villain? If she's not actively using her power publicly/commercially... why would she even need costume? How would anyone even know she was a cape? If she's prepared to kill if need be, has she before?
