Women's soccer matches started today, and the men start tomorrow, then the opening ceremony on Friday, and after that, the floodgates open and the sports fun begins for another two weeks.

So hey, why not a thread for the games of the 31st Olympiad.

Since I participated in Gymnastics since I was 4 years old and up till I was 16 I will be following that sport closely for sure.

Those apparently started today too, but I can't find any streams on the NBC website, so...

Most of the football matches so far have been great.

The GBR vs BRZ 7 aside rugby was hilarious, suuuuch a stomp. Watching the boxing now - why on earth is the ref wearing a bow tie and white silk gloves!?

Great news for any Australians watching... we are leading the medal tally after two days, currently holding three gold and two bronze medals. Awesome job to Catherine Skinner for winning in the trap shooting.

We also won against Spain 24-0 in the women's basketball, next opponent will be Turkey. The Aussies also thrashed Spain in the women's rugby sevens quarter-finals, with a 19-0 win.

With this Olympics being the first time Australia has more female participants than males, it's a great time for our female competitors at the moment.

Anyways, while Australia currently leads the medal tally, China is currently second with two gold and silver medals each as well as three bronze. South Korea, Hungary and the US are currently third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The French vaulter who snapped his leg in half, yeeeeesh... Are you guys supporting your home countries in the events or do you just enjoy watching the games? I was getting very hyped for GBR in the 7s women's rugby but they fell just short of bronze after an uncharacteristically bad display against Canada. They destroyed them in the previous game so not sure what happened there but what can you do haha.

I just watch the games. I will go out of my way to watch the USWNT in soccer, or both basketball teams though.

Just watched Kristin Armstrong receive her gold medal, that was a really touching experience! You can tell that meant so much to her ah, those were the tears of an incredibly emotional moment.

Great job to Australia for winning the women's Rugby Sevens gold medal. The first time we have won an Olympic medal in the sport, so it's a time to be proud of my country's huge female representation at these Olympics.

Well it's the first time anyone has won a medal in rugby sevens.

The Aussies ran the US pretty close in the men's basketball last night which is obviously some achievement given the teams' relative strengths.

I can't help but find I'm rooting against the US 90% of the time. I think the only event I've watched that they have lost so far was the mens' archery.

Been hearing a lot about Simone Biles for gymnastics. Been checking out her out on some of the events and I can see why, she's a powerhouse there.

Yesterday there was a tie in one of the women's swimming events, pretty cool both other Simone and Penny getting gold. I think there's also a tie in the men's, too, or at least pretty close. Crazy.

When I watched the Closing Ceremony last night, I enjoyed it. One part I really enjoyed was the preview of 2020 Olympics that will be held in Tokyo. Why did I really enjoy that part, well two famous video game characters made an appearance in it. The two video game characters being Pac-Man and Mario.
