Has there ever been a character you could have SWORN was a man or woman but turned out to be the opposite?

There was this one character in Inuyasha (forgot his name) who was attracted to both Inuyasha and Miroku and I seriously thought he was a woman because of the lipstick and the way he was dressed lol.

Grell, stop being confusing. First, I saw a plushie of Grell and assumed Grell was a female. Then I saw the Black Butler anime, and realised "Wait, Grell's a guy?" but THEN, Grell shows true form and starts acting like a woman... and THEN I finally found the Word of God that stated that Grell is acctually a Male-to-Female Transvestite. Now it makes sense.

... and I'm sure everyone who saw that early arc in Naruto coulda SWORN Haku was a girl at first.

    ^ exact-****ing-ly! Haku = girl. TOTALLY.

But then he turned out to be a guy. what a trap. :p

When I saw Kirito for the first time in SAO II poster, I thought he was a girl. And that we had two girls as MCs this time. But nope. It had to be trapirito.

I'll just put these here, since we are talking about androgyny traps in anime after all.

Oh how I love androgynous characters in anime, because I love seeing the reactions on people's faces when they find out it's a trap.

^ ooh, Nuriko. I loved him as a character. First trap apart from Haku that literally trapped me. He was a great character too - easily my fave in the Fushigi Yuugi series. <3

Crona is a very good example of androgyny done right. Even better that it's just a fact of the character and not something that is given an unneeded amount of focus.

Nearly all of those pictures look like girls to me, so I'm assuming the reality is they're male? I think some of you don't know what androgyny is. It's not being a transvestite or a "trap".

Chrona from Soul Eater, definitely. And seconding Envy, although Chrona's the only one whose gender I really want to know haha. They went through the entire series without giving any confirmation! Though maybe there's a gender indication in the manga?

Why did this thread had to have Boku no Pico so soon...?
Btw... why Hayate? He's just crossdresser.

Anyways, now that I've been watching anime for ~7 years, I can pretty much distinguish who is trap and who isn't =D

But I guess I'll upvote for Chrona and Envy. (I believe they made him male in the original and female in FMA-B?) because I watched those when I wasn't informed in trapology.

Could also be Dar'c from Nanana's Buried Treasure but... because she, he, is voiced by HER, I was well informed =D

Well if we want to get technical on the definition of Androgynous:

The current definition of the adjective is having partly masculine and feminine features in terms of appearance; of indeterminate sex.

and of course the "dated" definition of having both male and female characteristics; which basically equates androgyny to hermaphrodites.

Now with that being said, I can see how this whole matter can get confusing at times, especially with overlapping definitions and I'm glad that I got myself reacquainted with the whole matter.

On that note: Griffith, Gren and Edward from Cowboy Bebop, Gackt. Yes, I'm counting Gackt, because he looks like a androgynous anime character in real life.

Yeah boys that you think are girls aren't androgynous, they're feminine.

The only one I can actually think of offhand though is Edward from Cowboy Bebop which was already mentioned. When they don't reveal a gender it annoys me, not because I care about their gender, but because it makes it hard to have a conversation since our pronouns are inherently gendered.

Nope. The manga was more ambiguous with Crona. Whereas the anime would consistently use 'he,' in the manga different characters had different ideas of Crona's gender.
