Apple?s long-rumored Amazon Echo competitor is real. It?s called the HomePod (yes, I know). ?We want to reinvent home music,? Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the company?s WWDC keynote. The Apple Speaker is focused on music first, not Siri.

Apple?s SVP of Global Marketing Phil Schiller said Sonos aren?t smart speakers and Amazon Echos aren?t good speakers. So Apple wants to combine the best of both worlds. It?s a smart marketing strategy. HomePod is shipping later this year ? it?s not quite ready for prime time.

The device is a pill-shaped circular speaker. It has a seven beam-forming tweeter array. It has a custom-made woofer and an Apple A8 chip. It has multi-channel echo cancellation, real-time acoustic modeling and more.

From how things are right now, it'll be costing around $350. I'm curious to know how much more smart they're able to make HomePod in comparision to Echo.

Well, I'm not sure how much this can take off. Amazon already has the Echo, and Google has their Home. I can definitely see hardcore Apple fans investing into the device, but really it's just a fad at this point to have a wireless system to talk to.

Amazon and Google already have this and lately Windows 10 released theirs too. Looks like IoT is trending

I still don't understand the appeal of these devices at all. A box in my house listening to everything I say, in return for a few "features" that do things I could do very easily already? No thanks.

Was bound to happen. They need to get their foot into the IoT business or else they're going to have a hard time in the future.
That's such a garbage name too. Makes me think of something completely different than its intended purpose. Bad marketing move in my opinion.
Well, Apple isn't selling fruit, either. But I'm inclined to agree.

True, but at least Apple products have an "apple" logo on their products, so at least it's brand recognition. HomeBox just ain't cutting it for me.

Another overpriced Apple device which the competition already beat...great. The only reason people are going to buy this is for the apple brand. I myself wouldn't buy any of these types of devices for privacy reasons.

I plan on getting one of these when it comes out. My only hope is that they have enough supply to handle the demand, because this has been something that a lot of people in the Apple community have wanted for a very long time. The release of the Air Pods was a complete disaster, and although I found a way to get them for considerably cheaper (although still above box value) than others have, they're still not stocked in the stores.

From a company that places a lot of marketing and push for privacy, a statement like this is more than a little foolish.

I meant speaker devices in general. You don't know what kind of data they're collecting from you as you speak. Apple Pods may be fine, but I was referring more to Alexa and Google Home.
