It takes about four years for light to travel to the nearest star. So we're going to have a hard time exploring the universe.

8.3 minutes for sunlight to reach earth and 4 years is only for the closest star to earth. On average, a star's light can take anywhere from 8,000 to 20,000 years, that's for stars in our galaxy, for those that aren't, it can take up to five million years. I remember my teacher in the 5th grade saying that at any given time, at least a quarter of the stars in the sky have long since died and the light is just now reaching us, sorta like looking in the past or something.
