6th Gen Battle Mechanics & Environments Discussion

The small amount one can see from that screenshot looks really nice. As I expected, Brendan looks stunning in 3D. The environment graphics do look refined from X and Y, although it still resembles the Kalos battle system, but I don't notice any substantial changes, so maybe whatever that was isn't shown in this screenshot.

A nice game mechanic could be revamping some of the mini-games. Undersea racing, mountain climbing. And battle mini-games could have sky battles and dive battles. Oh, maybe even some Funfest missions returning, since it was such an easy way to collect items, for free, I personally used it as a way to get an extensive amount of shards for move tutors.

Soooo hopefully, minigames get a nice boost.

Probably reading into this too much since these are photographs of Corocoro, but Brenden's skin looks lighter in the screenie Cat linked than it does in the artwork.

Yeah.. doesn't really look like they've changed that much though. Could be a beta though, to show the Megas in action instead of battle itself. Though I would be alright with Kalos's battle system if they cut out a lot of those unnecessary camera angle changes.

It does. There seems to be a lot of debate about Brendan's skin color in the artwork, some deeming it to be too dark, which I think is absurd. His redesign looks nice, and more like a person that lives in a tropical region, unlike his original concept and outfit. Wonder why his skin doesn't remain dark in the screenshot though o:

I liked the camera angle changes in X and Y, they reminded me of Colosseum, which had one of my favorite Pokemon battle systems to date. Wouldn't mind if ORAS keeps the system constant with Kalos, but one of the main things I want to see back is the short animation each Pokemon has after they faint and return to their poke-ball.

i hope they get rid of the rather obvious circles that your Pokemon stand on during battle. That was one thing back in the day, but nowadays I think it'd look better/more natural if the circles were removed.
I was just about to get on that, I feel the immersion is lost by these random circles that pop up, it doesn't make the battle really feel like its apart of the enviroment. It was much better handled with Pokemon Gamecube. I prefered it when the ground you walked on was the same level of ground the pokemon was on. Not so much with X/Y where they would randomly appear and disappear with the circles. The tall grass should be all around both of the characters on screen. 3D is useless without some realism.

I really think they should provide the option to adjust the camera height in-game to regulate how much of the birds-eye view you want. Personally I'd want to play the game over the shoulder like Fallout or even First person rather than semi.

The battle circles, needed to age as the graphics of Pokemon from 2D to 3D. In he 2D games, it was justifible having those circles there, because there wasnt much environment during battles, and teams must be distinguished. But now since its 3D, its odd having those there. We have a 3D plane to work with now. Now the circles can be removed.

They could have at least made the backdrops look a little different instead of rehashing. So far it resembles too much like the Kalos region and not Hoenn. I was honestly hoping for a more closer adaption of Gen 3's look to the game but it seems they've just copied the X and Y's lay out.

All I want is the circles removed, why are they even there?

I'm pretty sure the circles have been there specifically to show you what kind of environmental effect your moves will have when using a move that changes with the environment.

Well for starters we can see Back views of the trainer in-battle are returning! Rather than having just a hand throwing the Pokéball we actually get to see the trailer in full effect
That was something that was little annoying in X/Y if they fixed that, I'l be glad. Though I want them to take that further and leave the trainers behind their pokemon in the standby screens again as done on the console games. It just fills the space and idea that were actually having a trainer battle. It would be even better if they went back to Revolution's aesthetic where they show the trainers giving the commands to their pokemon as well.

I'm hoping that at the beginning of boss battles, they show the trainer with a short animation to add the effect of it being an important event in the game, contrasting common trainer battles. They did this in some respects in X and Y, so I hope it returns, improved, in ORAS. Other than that, I really like what I can see so far from the scans showing the new Megas battling each other. n__n

Well thus far all the remakes have looked similar to the original pair or the third version of the generation depending on which part of the generation they were released in. FrLg look similar to Ruby and Sapphire, HeartGold and Soul Silver looked similar to Platinum. So it's to be expected that it'll look similar to X and Y. I don't think we've seen enough of Hoenn yet to be able to call it a carbon copy of XY's graphics.

They also actually COULD be Kalos's graphics - maybe they were using it as a base and were going to redesign it into Hoenn later. The main focus is supposed to be the new designs and Megas after all, not about the graphics yet :)

That's true. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if it was basically the Kalos battle system implemented in ORAS, it was an amazing upgrade from previous generations, and there were no glaring fallacies to it. Now, if they do put some time into improving it, I won't be complaining, haha. Personally hoping to see even more environment backgrounds than there were in X and Y.

Indeed, I'm really excited to see how the underwater environment will look, especially if there are underwater battles introduced. That typical little circular field that pops up probably won't work out great for what's obviously an entirely different world... maybe the Pokemon will appear in a bubble of air and float around releasing their attacks. ~__~

So E3 showed off quite a few new things!

It seems they have redone our battle backgrounds to add some depth and increased color... like the mountain behind Pikachu, as well as the extended treeline on both sides. Helps to show off the foresty scene a lot better! But it seems that our 'circles' have returned and reappear right beneath our Pokemon as we send them out, just as they did in X&Y.

They briefly displayed more backgrounds too.
I'm assuming the top shot occurs at Mt. Chimney and the latter occurs in Slateport.

I love how they made the backgrounds. They look more diverse compared to the rather generic ones we got in XY. I also love how they put Mudkip in a beach, and Torchic in what looks like a volcano like rocky place. Now where is my screenshot of Treeko with a forest background?

I hope that we'll be able to change the background in ORAS. While I liked the wi-fi background in XY it got old after awhile. Speaking of the wi-fi background I wonder if they'll redesign it.

The backgrounds seriously pop off the screen; the colors look brighter and blend in with the Pokemon, and the artwork behind the actual battle is amazing, and a clear improvement from X and Y. In ORAS, what new battle environment do you guys want to see? I hope they really spice the one for routes around Fortree up, add some marsh, tropical trees and bushes. Should look really nice!

I want to see what they will do with underwater. It's going to look amazing or horrible. I doubt it will be just alright. UnderWater could include other Pokemon swimming by or something. They have done good with the other environments tho, so maybe they will do good with the Under water Battle environment.

I would love that.

I like how the circles blend with the background now, they no longer seem so out of place as before.
