I think the earlier gens had more charm to them and gen IV and V were more standard and closer to the official artwork but kind of boring. I enjoyed Crystal's battle animations, unlike later, they weren't just the Pokemon growing and shrinking in size.

Gen III's sprites for Kanto/Johto were lifeless or just off though, Kanto was fixed somewhat with FRLG, but I really like the Hoenn ones, probably because they were new so GF put more work into them. They had a cool unique look that got lost in transition to the next gen.

RGB aside, I feel that RSE had some of the worst sprites. I thought for the longest time that Gulpin and Swalot's upper lip was a round nose and the lower a goofy smile, that Metagross had dragon-like wings, and that Jirachi's third eye was a pendant. Nosepass also lookes really awkward in Gen. III, as well as Banette and the proportions on Deoxys. Milotic doesn't look that pretty in RSE, nor does Salamence look particularly intimidating. Some of these along with others are also inconsistent with the primary sprite style, having softer outlines.

Most of the RGB sprites were sprited freehand before any official art for the Pokémon were made, so I can understand some of those looking wonky. I wonder if this was the case with RSE as well? The Gen. I-II sprites in RSE actually look pretty spot-on.

I'm inclined to say that HGSS have the best sprites. Lickitung, Vaporeon, Dragonair, Furret... Hnng! <3

Special shoutout to Gen 1 Mew, Golbat and Kakuna with arms for being the worst/most hilarious.

As for the best, I really liked a lot of Silver's sprites for some reason, more so than Gold or even Crystal!
