Can moderators please stop putting silly images in their section indexes?

@Cass:

For moment, I couldn't tell what you meant by "Forum Splashes" When I realized that it was those big, cumbersome, mod-chosen pictures that some sections use (Proudly not VG, thanks to LGD. xD) I was like; oh yeah, I know what you mean.

I digress though, I didn't know what you were taking about, initially, because some of the skins that can be selected for the forum as whole, take the one I'm using for example, (Y-Axis) already don't show them.

So might I propose switching to forum themes that doesn't support those pesky forum splashes?

Your friend, Amilio Astivez (Tim)

Well, from your concern, Cassino and the rest of you, just so you know, if you have any problems with VG's splash, feel free to address that to me, and we can work something out! I don't really think splashes are too big of a deal in general, so, I'll be always prepared to re-model VG's splash art so it'll be more pleasing to look at, or to be more convenient for you all~

I was speaking with one of the other HQ staff members, it might be worth bringing in some guidelines for the splashes soon. Just so that they're not overly large, that's pretty much my only issue with splashes really. A toggle, and the guideline of how large they can be (so that they don't stretch screens) might be a decent compromise overall. So I'm sure one of us can bring this forward to the staff forums soon.

@stranger That would be great, along with some sensible filesize restrictions for those of us on crappy internet, or (God forbid) 3G on mobile.

Point is, when you're under limiting circumstances, you just don't have time to load a 1.3 MB 640x480 GIF of a kitten playing peek-a-boo. Albeit its cute and funny when you're on broadband on your PC at home, don't you think it'd be incredibly annoying on 4G while out and about?

4G is actually a pretty decent speed. What makes it slow is when you're in an area with a high concentration of wireless devices, particularly those with your carrier. If anything, the splash images should be included in option for turning off images in the UserCP.

I believe I went over this already:

That's a relative measurement given the varying screen sizes in use and the fact that the majority of the styles are relative-width styles.

I do agree with the idea of having the splash images being part of the images that are disabled when you select that option (I'm guessing that currently aren't because coding and such).

Also, since there was clearly a complaint in this thread about the gif in FG being "off-topic" or "non-related" (in a quite retrospectively pointless/off-topic section so uhm) if you have any suggestions for something different then feel free to speak up and VM/PM Netto or me or something. The only thing I can think of is like a picture of maybe jeopardy but even that isn't exactly related to the section y'know?

PVP's flash has featured a gif that changes every week due to a contest Brendino has been running all way since summer. PGen's splash image has changed a lot lately, every week or so, because I thought it could be nice rather than having a stale image that never variates.

So even though Cassino never personally visits the section I mod, I take in some of the critique here. An image size restriction can certainly be good, especially with gifs. However, the splashes are used to display different information for different sections, some have thread of the week and stuff, so putting a limit on how often it can be edited would be senseless. Common sense is what mods need to use. I should maybe employ my own better, for instance.

Don't want no rules on what text should look like though. Splashes should be unique and give a feeling to the section! And I really dislike centered text, okay.

Just want to pop in and say I have never had any issue with images or gifs using an obsolete 3G phone, which is way slower than a 4G device. No lag, no issue opening threads, and they never appear too large that its hard to scroll.

Dial-up and slow bandwith that I have at the library doesn't have any issues either.
