I think the Pink Butterfree was just to show it was female, kind of like how in D/P/Pt (Roselia's sprite in Pt = BLECH!) some pokemon have male and female differances.

Hate to point this out. EVERYONE points this out. They also appear to be CATS as well, by appearance (Entei looks like a lion, Suicune a Cheetah and Raikou a Saber-Tooth Tiger). They are classed as BOTH a cat and a dog.
