How important are these side competitions to you in a game? Do you strive to be the best just as you would the gym battles? Or are they something you ignore as much as you can?

I personally like them all, though with the exception of Black and AS haven't really competed in them as much as I would like. I really felt the incentive in AS to win! You got some really good rewards and neither the Contest or making Pokeblocks were complicated and didn't take too long. I loved seeing all the Ribbons on my Pokemon and the sparkly bow when you send your Pokemon out to battle!

The Musicals were cute but you didn't really have to do much and got a little repetitive with no real great rewards. The Pokeathlon was interesting and fun but I never played it that much. I may go back and explore it some more!

I like having these competitions in the games as a side quest of sorts and hope they'll continue. It would be cool to have Gym Battles, Contests and Pokeathlon all in one game!

These sidequests are always fun and add a little twist to the game outside of the usual "collect badges, defeat villains, become champion" plot that's typical for the games. The Pokeathlon was the one I enjoyed the least because I was only good in one course due to most of the events being very hard. On the other hand, was I really the only person who loved the Musicals? The ability to wear nice cute accessories like that was fun.

In general I tend to stay away from these kind of extra sidequests. For the most part, they really aren't as much fun for me compared to the core story and gameplay. However, I did do contests in Platinum so I could get into the Ribbon Syndicate. One thing I will say, is that the movie making stuff in BW2 was surprisingly entertaining.

 

[Sun]

It depends. I'll start from Pokémon Musical first, the soundtracks are good. However, the over repetitive and boring nature of the Musical ticks me off. Nevertheless I had to participate just to get all the Accessory for the sake of upgrading my Trainer Card. :(

Pokéatlon on the other hand is more enjoyable due to having different categories. I play it for the sake of the prizes, the fun just comes second though. :P

Contest
- I enjoyed the Hoenn Contest while it's simple, firstly the Contest and competitive moves is sorta convertable, secondly it's because of May from the anime's "endorsement".
- Similar to the Hoenn Contest, I wouldn't play it on the first place because of Dawn's involvement on the anime, secondly some competitive combo works on the Sinnoh region's Super Contest as well.
- Contest Spectacular from the remakes, while similar to the orginals. No doubt it's those tiny to few difference drives me off from it. Not to mention, the slow frame rate and 'Nintendo Hard' is huge turn off.

i thought the contests were okay, i actually got into them a bit during rse. musicals on the other hand were not my thing at all. i think i literally tried it once and was just like... yeah no. THE POKEATHLON THOUGH!!! Best pointless side edition to a pokemon game ever!! Idk what it is but I thought they were so fun. It was awesome that you literally could just go catch a pokemon, practically any level, and it could be great in one of the courses. Then on top of that being able to face gym leaders was a really neat little feature. Speed and strength course were my favorites!!

I sadly never cared for them! I hated contests in R/S/E they felt unnecessary. Hopefully that will change in OR/AS once I get it.

 

[Lycanthropy]

I've played some contests, but to excel at those you need completely different movesets than battleworthy ones. They're fun to try for a bit, but as said earlier, they get boring pretty quickly. I think I misunderstood Pokéblocks too, because my Azumarill refused to eat any more of them, while it only had five hearts in the appeal round, while the opponent's Pokémon all had seven or eight, which made it a lot harder to win.

 

[Frozen Lotus]

I like the idea of them. They give you something to do with Pokemon other than just battling, which is always nice since I encourage any form of enjoyable bonding with your Mons... However, I never really bothered with most of them personally. I just don't find a lot of fun in them. So it's something I'm glad exists, it's just not something... I do much.
