Is there something you've been considering watching/reading but not really felt compelled enough to actually try yet?

In this thread, you can mention media that you've been eyeing but maybe need some extra motivation to actually get started on!

If you see a mention in this thread of a show/film/book/comic that you've already consumed and loved, please quote your fellow entertainmenter (median?) and tell them why they should definitely give it a shot!

Star Trek Discovery...I keep meaning to try this again, after the first few episodes failed to leave any kind of impression on me and my impatient nature meant I didn't want to wait week-to-week for new episodes. But that first impression...yeah, it wasn't great. It was Enterprise all over again. Not Deep Space Nine levels of off-putting, but not compelling. But it's been a while now so maybe it's picked up...maybe...

Sons of Anarchy is another one but I just keep pushing this back...and back...and back.

So! Discovery is a special one. If you're used to the golden 90s of Star Trek with DS9, Voyager and TNG, Discovery is gonna feel very different.

One thing is that we're used in the other shows to a rich cast of chars who get their share of spotlight and have their own problems and intrigues, but Discovery almost completely revolves around the "adopted vulcan" Michael Burnham. Have faith though, we do get to see and feel the rest of the crew too, it just takes a little while and goes slower. I personally love Stamets and Tilly, and eventually Saru becomes a dear cool char too, be patient :3

Keep in mind also that the first season really sets things up and "gathers the gang" so to speak. The first few eps are not like the rest of the show is, for that reason! Give it at least 4-5 eps to start getting into life on Discovery and see the crew a bit :) iirc. Burnham starts off the show on another ship in an earlier time, see.

Another difference to earlier Star Trek also, even compared to the outdrawn DS9, is that there's always plot. Discovery as a show is always going somewhere and I loved the plot twists of s1 and were at least intrigued by s2's even if I wish they had done a few things different ahah. There's also plenty of nods to older shows. For example, the captain of s2 is a beloved hunk you might have seen in the oooold show or in very new movies... oh also Spock. yup.

Of course the modern format and CGI also makes Discovery a much better looking show than Star Trek's ever been before. The music in it is beautiful too. If you make the decision to forgive the fact that they're meant to portray tech older than Kirk's Enterprise had despite everything looking much newer and cooler, and if you also endure Ash Tyler (a character I cannot defend nor like fjfkkfm sorry) then Discovery becomes a really enjoyable show, and a fresh breath in the Star Trek legacy :)

I've considered watching Game of Thrones.

There's no reason that I haven't. It's in the back of my head, but also on the back of my list at the same time.

the first few seasons are great, and stick pretty well to the books. The first 4 or 5 seasons are definitely some of the best TV I've ever watched, and the sixth season isn't too bad either.

however, once they ran out of source material (i.e. surpassed the books), for me, it wasn't as great. i appreciated various popular theories being confirmed, but the writing of the show wasn't as great. but they're still well-made and the cgi/production value is great.

Gonna have to say the opposite of Tyler and say it's absolutely worth it. The last season is definitely not as good as the rest of the series, but it's enjoyable enough viewing - it feels worse than it is largely because of how amazing everything that comes before it is. The fantastic twists/use of subversion, interesting and compelling characters and fantastic writing up to that point definitely make it worth experiencing the show.

I would warn you not to read the books if you don't have a really good attention span though. The worldbuilding and story are amazing, but the books are also bloated and often go into too much detail or into unnecessary subplots.

I can give arguments for why watching GoT is a good idea later, rn I don't have time o: but essentially it's darn epic and the characters and political intrigue is something you don't want to miss out on. Even if I do agree that the last couple of seasons were a bit of a letdown ahah. Until then, epic.

If you know who Heatwave, Firestorm, and Captain Cold are, that's all you need to know really - just go watch Legends of Tomorrow and forget about all the other shows. If you don't think The Flash is worth sticking with, you definitely want to avoid watching Supergirl entirely...

I'm thinking about watching House of Cards after I finish Suits in a couple of days. I'm not overly bothered by Kevin Spacey being in it - I don't approve of his private life, but art =/= artist as far as I'm concerned, I'm quite capable of disliking an actor and enjoying their performance as a character in something - but I'm put off a bit by the final season. Someone convince me the narrative sticks the landing without his character in it, when he was previously central to the whole thing?

...or should I finally get around to watching The Office?

Food wars. Looks really good and it appeals to the cook side of me but I struggle getting through anime. Bleach, Wolf's Rain, and One Punch Man are the only ones I have gotten through.

Not sure if dissuading is part of this but man, the CW hero shows suck. They are all semi soap operas and very formulaic. If you have seen Arrow you have seen arguably the best one and I would call it quits if you aren't very invested.

    CW hero shows?

Ah, maybe I'll start with Arrow and see if I even like that one then haha. Formulaic meaning they're all p much the same and predictable?

Yeah, CW is kind of notorious for turning shows into soap opera-esque shows and once you have seen a few you can predict the episode within a few minutes of the start. The first couple of seasons of Arrow are the best that I have seen out of Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl/woman? (can't remember what it is called) That is just my opinion though but I really tried and I didn't go in jaded.
